1. On the basis of construction method:

Rolled fill earth dams

2. On the basis of mechanical characteristics of earth materials which make up the dam section:

Homogeneous earth dams
Non-Homogeneous (zoned) earth dams: They are further classified into 4 categories namely non-homogeneous having inclined impervious zone of artificial material, having impervious zone of soil with low permeability, having central core soil material of low permeability and having a central thin diaphragm of impervious material.

Successive layers of damp or moistened soils are laid over one another in this kind of dam. At optimum moisture content, each layer not beyond 20 cm in thickness is adequately consolidated, only then is the next layer laid out.
