Introduction

The vascular plants are called so because they have vascular tissue in them, there are two type of vascular tissue found in plants for the transport of different substances in plant body.

There are, Xylem and phloem.

The xylem is responsible for the transport of water from the roots to the upper parts of plant, and in leaves for photosynthesis and transpiration.

The transport of water in xylem is unidirectional i.e. it takes in one direction only from roots to the branches of tree.

The phloem is responsible for the transport of sugars most probably sucrose, produced after photosynthesis in leaves.

This sucrose needs to be transported to each and every tissue of the plant.

The transport of sugars in phloem is bidirectional, i.e. it could occur from leaves to bottom parts as well as from the bottom parts to upper plant parts.

 

During photosynthesis the sugars is produce in the leaves and it is transported to other parts of body after loading into phloem, this transport takes place from high concentration to low concentration parts of plant body as explained by Munch hypothesis.

This transported food is used by plant cells and the excess of it is stored in organs like roots.

During spring this process is reversed as during this time the stored food in roots is transported back to growing buds for their regrowth by phloem.

Thus the transport of nutrients in phloem is bidirectional.
