Expert Solution
Pentose Phosphate Pathway

Pentose Phosphate Pathway, also called the HMP shunt pathway is a multipurpose biochemical pathway that takes place in the cytoplasm of all cellular lifeforms.  It generates the reducing agent NADPH;  provides a way to synthesize and breakdown 3C,4C,5C,6C & 7C sugars and incorporate them into ATP, NADH, FAD, DNA, RNA, Co.A, etc;

The pathway is composed of 2 phases;

  1. Oxidative phase: the oxidative phase can be summed up as,

Glucose 6 phosphate + 2NADP++H2ORibose 5 phosphate + 2NADPH+2H++CO2----(eq1)

     2.  Non-Oxidative phase: the non-oxidative phase can be summed up as,

3 x( Ribose 5 phosphate) 2 x( Fructose 6 phosphate) + Glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate----(eq2)
