Question

Explain about water samples and how it is obtained?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The term sample refers to a group of people, objects or items that are taken from a larger population for measurement. The sample should be taken from a particular population such that the results can be generalized to that specific population.

Water sampling is defined as the process where a small amount of water is taken for analysis or some other testing. For example a sample of river water is taken to check for the number of pollutants in it, a sample of the bathing water to check that it is safe for bathing.

There are two types of water sampling.

  • Grab Sampling
  • Composite Sampling.

Grab Sampling

A sample that is collected at a certain required time and specific location is known as Grab sample

Composite Sampling

When different grab samples from different location and time are taken and then pooled together such that one new sample is formed such a sample is termed as composite sampling.
