Central nervous system stimulants are psychoactive drugs which are prescribed to enhance the sensory and motor activities. For example: Amphetamines, anorexiants, Modafinil and so on.

  • Attention deficit hyperactive disorder
  • Narcolepsy
  • Neonatal apnea
  • Drug induced respiratory depression
  • Psychopathic personality
  • History of suicidal tendency
  • Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

  • Analeptic stimulant
  • Psychomotor stimulants
  • Methylxanthines.

 

Step 2

Central nervous system stimulants side effects

These drugs cause many side effects when use in therapeutic doses, such as,

  • Moderate dose causes anorexia, anxiety and agitation.
  • High doses cause emesis and convulsion.
  • Lethal dose may be associated with cardiac arrhythmia.
  • Abrupt use of these drugs lead to lethargy, irritability and headache.

Objective data:

Assess for dizziness, insomnia, headache, blood pressure, and vital signs. 

Decreased cardiac output
  • Assess for cold calmly skin, hypoxia and restlessness.
  • Monitor patient periodically for weak pulse and fluid retention.
  • Monitor intake and output chart.
  • Auscultate for heart sounds.
  • Provide recommended position, for example supine position.
  • Assist in activities of daily living. 
  Proper assessment helps to identify decreased perfusion symptoms early.
