Expert Solution
Introduction

The lungs are covered by a membrane called the pleural membrane. It consists of two layers - the outer parietal layer lines the interior of the chest wall whereas the inner visceral layer lines the external region of the lungs. The pleural cavity is the space in between these two layers and filled with pleural fluid. This fluid acts as a lubricant and thereby preventing the friction between the lungs and the rib cage during breathing.
