Throughout my academic career, I have faced a few challenges that shaped me into the person I am today. The distinct obstacles that I had to overcome changed my perception of the world and my personality. In first grade, I moved from South Korea to the United States, In korea, I was outgoing and confident. I lived in the countryside where my mother was a nurse practitioner so I always had the best toys and the best resources for my education. This allowed me to excel in school and gain numerous friends. However, my move to America changed all of that. I did not know a word in English and barely knew the alphabet. It was such a bleak contrast to my life in Korea as I was belittled for my lacking English skills and inability to communicate. In

Over the past eighteen years I have been alive, there have not been any real challenges I have faced in my pursuit of education. I come from a family of immigrants that managed to find themselves a good life, away from the ghetto and the poverty line, through hard work. Both my parents had to move to a place away from everything they knew to learn English as a second language to give their children, myself included, a better chance at life, and I can gladly say their effort was not in vain. If there was one thing I struggled with in pursuit of my education, it would have to be myself.

When I think of a significant challenge, the thing which stands out in my mind is one of the biggest change in my life which was moving to the United States. I was in 11th grade in Pakistan before I migrated to the U.S. I had to retake that grade. I felt bad to be one year behind, but later I started to participate actively in all my classes, but the change of the type of study was the biggest obstacle in my way to get educated and be successful. The most significant challenge that I've had to face was moving schools and even states. It was some of the biggest and quickest changes I've ever had to deal with and it wasn’t easy especially at ages 8 through 11. My interest in Computer Science started when I joined in Robotics Team during my Sophomore year of high school. As a new member, I presumed a semester of Honors Computer Science would prepare me to contribute to the team. My initial excitement was short-lived, however, as I trudged through program after program - completing well over thirty by the end of the first semester. I sensed something was missing; I didn’t feel completely fulfilled.

The most significant challenge that I have faced in high school is my grandmother passing away. She was an amazing woman who helped to raise me as much as she could.
