What Is Measurement Validity?

What is the reliability of a measurement? What is the validity of a measurement? Can a measurement be valid if it is not reliable? Explain.

Validity refers to whether the research conducted is what it intended to be. Validity involves dependability, which means, a valid measure must be reliable. But, reliability doesn’t have to link to validity, a reliable measure is not required to be valid.

It is possible for a measure to have one and not all of the above criteria’s. If it lacks one of the measurements the chances of the study/research lacking credibility are higher.

Convergent validity is a measure as a construct to the extent that the item correlates with what it should correlate if it is a measure of the construct, usually by Pearson correlation. Measure can be positive or negatively correlated. For example, how many times do you knock on a door positively correlating to compulsive to how many times you quietly meditate being negatively correlated.

The answer is discrete because there are whole numbers and there is no in-between. The oak tree is 21 not 21.5 it is 21. Only whole number intervals are considered discrete numbers.

David A. Frisbie (2005) the author, Measurement 101: Some Fundamentals Revisited, takes the position that the “fundamental measurement concept and relationships often are used in our written communication in a way that demonstrates misunderstanding and leads to confusion “ (p.21). Frisbie goes on then to provide information about this often misunderstood concept. Frisbie begins discussing validity and how it is a misused and misunderstood term. Validity is not a test, it is more about how we interpret the test.

Validity refers to that measuring tool or approaches can accurately measure things needed to be measured. It can be considered as an extent that measured results reflect investigative contents. Measured results more tend to be identical, validity will be higher, vice versa. Concept has been defined as “symbolic statement describing a phenomena or class of phenomena (Kim, 2000,p.15). It can be theoretical or non theoretical like hope, love and desire or body temperature, pain (McEwen& Willis, 2011) the words like grief, empathy, power, job satisfaction or a phrase like health promoting behaviors or maternal attachment. Human conceptualization is critical to development of human thought, understanding, and then creativity. Human interpretation is very near to conceptualization. Our concepts and understanding are based off a conglomerate of our direct experiences with the world through time.

Reliability is defined, within psychometric testing, as the stability of a research study or measure(s). Reliability can be examined externally, Inter-rater and Test-Retest, as well as internally; which is seen in internal consistency reliability methods.
