Have you ever meet a refuge or know someone who escaped their country because of war? When refugees flee their home they need to stay in refugee camps where they get food and shelter but they can't stay there for ever. Refugees go thru many things when they come to America, one thing is they don't know english and they struggle to communicate. Another thing is that the kids might get bullied because they come from another place or of there religion. Ha life is similar to the universal:Refugees life because she was a refugee and she got bullied in school because where she came from. Ha’s life and the universal:Refugees life have been affected wich that make there life inside out.
When refugees flee home, they struggle a lot because they don't speak english and might get bullied. When Ha fled her home, she had to learn english, in the text it states “Until you children master English, you must think, do, wish for nothing else.” This means that Ha has still not learned how to speak english., and can not do anything until she learns it. This is almost as same as the universal:refugees because they when they first come to America they don't know english.

When Ha found a new home she needed to learn english and she got bullied. In the text it states “Until you children master English, you must think, do, wish for nothing else.”This quote means that Ha and her brothers could not do anything until they learn english. In the text it also states “I'm hiding in class.. I'm hiding in the bathroom during lunch..im hiding in the bathroom during recess..im hiding after school”This quote means that Ha is scared of the other kids that she hides in places. This is what Ha had to go thru while finding a new
Refugees are people who are forced to leave their home due to war, or natural disasters and try to start over by fleeing to a new country.Refugees are going through a lot, fleeing their homes, and having their lives turned inside out. For lots of families who are fleeing their country due to war or a natural disaster, it’s hard for them to adapt to their new lifestyle, learning a new language, new education, and bullies. Fleeing to America gives the refugees a fresh start in life, helps them to start over and more opportunities than they had in the country they fled from. “Children of War” “My graduation is next year, so I have to think about college...America is giving us a better future than we could have in Bosnia”(Brice-26).
Their lives twisted inside out when they fled their home and became refugees. The entire family boarded a U.S Navy ship and headed towards hope because they were forced to flee their home. They were headed to the United States of America because someone told them it has more opportunity for her children. This journey will change Ha’s personality because of all the challenges they faced
After reading the article, “Shattered Lives” by Kristin Lewis, Dania faces living as a refugee outside her country. The challenges that she faced are when they were in World
Under these circumstances school and education are taking a big part in refugees’ lives for example it says, “I know Pink Boy will get me, but right now I feel smart” (Lai 188). This statement from the book “Inside Out and Back Again” represents how Ha is feeling back home again. She gets to go to school and feels smart just like she did back home. Ha is now becoming happier and feels like she is getting her life back. In the same way schooling and education are making refugees feel back again in the article “Refugees: Who, Where, Why” when it says, “Schooling is provided for children” (Gevert). This statement shows how schooling is helping refugees all over feel like they are back home again. They can get educated from the refugee camps. They may be overcrowded, but it is helping many refugees get a chance for there lives back. It helps refugees feel like there is hope on the other side waiting for them. In addition schooling and education is helping refugees when it says, “Getting better because we can go to school… couldn’t… in Croatia because we are muslims” (Lai ). This statement comes from the book “Inside Out and Back Again“ and is representing how Ha is now able to go to school, and doesn’t have to worry about her race. She feels like she belongs where she is now, and nobody can take that away from her. Given these points,
Ha’s story relates to these other refugees because they both go to the United States with little to no English and are trying to get by. They struggle with not getting jobs and getting picked on because they don't have the English and education as others
Ha,like many refugees around the world, has to face many challenges that cause them to feel inside out, such as fitting in at school. Therefore when she was smart but when she had to move to a new country she had to learn a new culture and new languages “Mostly I wish I was still smart”(pg 159).She wish she was still smart because maybe her classmates don't let her in because she's not as smart as them.At school they...desire to be accepted by their peer group. It Is difficult to fit into their peer group because they might have different culture and speak different language. While she was in vietnamese she wasn't able to read a baby book because she wasn’t that smart.“ I can't read a baby book”(pg.130).She must think not being able to read a baby
Numerous numbers of refugees around the world identical to Ha and her family faced individual struggles that cause them to have the feeling of inside out, such as having difficulty of not know the language barrier. For example, Ha had a difficult time learning English upon arriving in America. “Whoever invented English must have loved snakes” (Lai, 118) At school now in America, Ha is learning a new language, it is roughly hard for her sometimes to make words plural and difficult to establish the new ways of her new life. At the same time, multiple refugees from Bhutan had no choice but to come to the U.S. the problem occur to be that several are unaware of English. “Many of us do not speak English” (Til Gurung Speech) Therefore, it is complicated
Like many refugees, Ha has dealt with discrimination, bullying and challenges throughout her transition into the Us. For example, “Pink boy and friends follow releasing shouts of BOO-DA BOO-DA”(Lai 108) Furthermore, in the book Ha is getting teased because of her race and religion. By getting bullied Ha’s transition to the US even more insufferable because she doesn't even feel safe at school here, when school was one of her favorite places back in Saigon. In addition to that Ha has to juggle even more problems than she was before, as if she isn't going through
When Ha lived in Vietnam she had some things that defined her like her friend TiTi who is now gone and her good education.”A man usually rides his bike 9 kilometers per hour, yet the wind slows him to 6.76 kilometers for 26 minutes and 5.55 kilometers for 10; how long before he gets home 11.54 kilometers away...My best friend TiTi is crying hard, snotting the hem of her pink fluffy blouse.”(pg.10/39) These quotes support that two of the things that define Ha are TiTi and her education because she was tasked with the equation about the an on the bike and when TiTi had to leave both of them were crying and sad. This part of her story relates to other refugees stories in Children of War when they told their stories of their old lives,”What was life like
First, in the article by Brice called “Children of War” the refugee, Amela, says, “wish I’d stayed…rather than being here…without friends.” Amela is saying she would rather have stayed somewhere she fits in, and experience constant danger and discrimination, than living in a sanctuary where she is safe, but alone. Similarly, when Ha’s tutor asked her, “But do you always eat in the bathroom? I nod” (Lai 181). Clearly Ha, like other refugees, felt isolated in her new country. Lastly, Ha wrote, “I’m hiding…” (Lai 160). Ha has detached herself from her peers in fear they will reject her. Furthermore, Ha is similar to to all children, not just refugees. Everyone goes through a time in their life when they feel they don’t
The author is trying to convey that the mother cherished everything she owned, everything in her life and knowing she had to leave a big part of her life devastated her more than anything she could ever imagine, the feelings of her loss, but she had to leave, become a refugee
Even though Ha and the other refugees wish they were back home, they did find home in their new country, but had some challenges along the way. They found ways to connect to what their lives were like back in their home country. I know Pink Boy will get me, but right now, I feel smart.” (Lai 188). Ha felt smart in back in vietnam, but when she came to America, she new most of the material that they were learning, except for english. At first Ha’s teacher told her to say the alphabet in english. When Ha was done, her teacher told the class to clap. That made Ha feel dumb, because she already new that. So when Pink Boy can’t solve the problem up on the chalkboard, Ha knows what to do, and solves it, and she feels smart again. “It’s good now. It’s not as good as it was in Bosnia, but better than Croatia.(Brice),“When I say I’m Muslim, people they don’t react like “Oh, I don’t want to be with you, I don’t want to be your friend because you’re muslim” (Brice). Life is better than it was in her other country that she was in before. People don’t say that they don't want to
The world these last two decades is going through a very strong and unstable situation. The wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Lybia resulted in the replacement of millions of people. In some cases, the replacement occurs within the same country, but in others, people are forced to leave their dear country, where they were born and raised, the place where they found joy and happiness, where they are around people who they have always been with and with whom the have stories, to venture into unknown lands. The sacrifice is worth for lives to be preserved during periods of war.
Ha and other refugees face the challenge they both have in common is dealing with having to deal with discrimination in their countries of asylum. First of all, “A pink boy with white hair on his head and white eyebrows and white eyelashes pulls my hair.” (Lai 145) Ha feel like the other students are interested in her arm hair, but then she realizes that they were actually making fun of her. Second of all, “Sometimes I wish I’d stayed at stayed there watching the war, rather than be safe here, safe but without friends” (Gervert) Refugees feel as if they would stay in a country at war with people that will not make fun of her, rather than in a safe country with people who make fun of her race. Lastly, “I’m the only straight black hair, black
Ha and the refugees have a challenging life, with the war occurring they struggle to find a protected place to live. Though it’s hard sometimes Ha would just rather be at her “real” home, “Sometimes I would choose war in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama” (Lai 195). Although it’s a rough time for her right now, she still keeps trying. Now for refugees it’s also more complicated for them, for example “If I don’t get shot today, i’ll live tomorrow” said Emir(Author Brice). Even though it’s tough to adapt to a new place, they still keep pushing themselves. When refugees get some guidance it’s still tough for them. “Some refugees cannot return home, nor can they stay in their new country asylum, they must resettle in a new country and adapt to new changes” (Catherine Gavert). In spite of the one option they have , they need to move again and adapt to another place. In conclusion, they have hard lives but regardless of what’s going on they keep pushing.
