Imagery is defined in The Oxford Dictionary as visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work. Imagery is one of the many examples of rhetorical devices used in literature to express the author’s ideas. In Dan Egan’s book, The Death and Life of the Great Lakes, Egan puts emphasis on the details to provide the readers with a clear vision to Egan’s ideas. In the beginning Egan talks about the seaway construction by stating, “Construction crews from boths side of the border tore into the river channel with so much violence and with such heavy earth-moving machinery” (Egan 22) Egan use of imagery allows for readers to understand what is going on through a mental picture. The detailed imagery explains the uses humans
Imagery: “Broadly defined, imagery is any sensory detail or evocation in a work; more narrowly, the use of figurative language to evoke a feeling, to call to mind an idea, or to describe an object. Imagery may be described as auditory, tactile, visual, or olfactory depending on which sense it primarily appeals to—hearing, touch, vision, or smell. An image is a particular instance of imagery.”
In the story "The Chrysanthemums," by John Steinbeck, imagery is important in the development of his characters. The man who drives the wagon and fixes things is a perfect example of imagery. "His worn black suit was wrinkled and spotted with grease. The laughter had disappeared from his face and eyes the moment his laughing voice ceased. His eyes were dark, and they were full of the
Imagery is used by many writers and this is when the writer uses visually descriptive or figurative language.
Mental images are created by the brain from memories, imagination, or a combination of both. Writers use imagery to help create mental images for the reader. Imagery is when words are used to appeal to your five senses, sight, taste, smell, touch, and sound. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird many types of imagery are used. Examples of imagery being used in the book is when the Radley place is being described, Scout’s teacher Miss. Caroline is being described, and when Miss. Caroline’s shriek was described.
Imagery is one of the components that were used by Edwards to make his story more persuasive. As the short story begins, the first sentence was an example of imagery. Edwards wrote when men are on Gods hands and they could fall to hell. natural men are held in the hands of God, over the pit of hell Knowing that you might fall into hell at any moment should scare you. God decided to save you until he wants to let you fall into an eternity of burning
The author uses imagery to interest the reader in her story that may seem mundane without the imagery. An example of this happening is when Jeannette is going to her new school in Welch it was her first day and the teacher picks on her because she did not have to give the school her records to her not having them as that is happening a tall girl stabs her out of nowhere“I felt something sharp and painful between my shoulder blades and turned around. The tall black girl with the almond eyes was sitting at the desk behind me.
3. Imagery- descriptive language used to make the audience think of a picture in their mind; words to help visualize.
First and foremost, Willa Cather and Mary Austin both employ beautiful imagery in their writings to recreate the landscape of the story they are telling, which heightens the understanding and appreciation for their writings. Their use of imagery is specific to appealing to their audience’s visual senses. In My Antonia, for example, Willa Cather describes the landscape at a particular moment by saying, “One afternoon we were having our reading lessons on the warm, grassy bank where the badger lived. It was a day of amber sunlight, but there was a shiver of coming winter in the air. I had seen ice on the little horsepond that morning, and as we went through the garden we found tall asparagus, with its red berries, lying on the ground, a mass of slimy green” (Cather 29). My Antonia has these descriptive passages throughout it, which enables the reader to feel part of the book. Likewise, Mary Austin’s The Land of Little Rain also utilizes imagery: Mary Austin says, “the mountains are steep and the rains are heavy, the pool is
Imagery provides insight into the how the author wanted the audience to visualize what he intended the scene to look like. “(The camera draws back. Katie is sitting in the kitchen phone nook, having a good gab with her sister while she idles through some catalogues...)” (King 740). The imagery in this example is very detailed.
Imagery is a technique used by all writers, authors and journalists alike. Imagery helps the reader to visualize the story, the setting, and the events that play out in
Analyze the title. The book Vampire Academy is named after St. Vladimir’s Academy. This is a special school where vampires learn magic and half-mortal teenagers are training to keep them safe. I think the author chose this title because St. Vladimir’s Academy is where most of the story’s events take place and the school is known as Vampire Academy. 2.
Analysis Mos Def once explained that “the ability to have somebody read something and see it, or for somebody to paint an entire landscape of imagery with just sheets of words- that’s magical”. This quote displays the importance of imagery and its function in literature. Imagery is the use of descriptive details that appeals to the readers’ senses. The “Iliad” by Homer is an epic poem with many examples of imagery.
Readers are able to relate to the figurative language that is used because it makes them want to understand what the author’s purpose of using it is. Imagery is an element that will add to the quality of the work because it relates to the five senses that a human can closely relate to. Along with those two figures of speech,
In class we defined imagery as creating an image with words, in other words imagery is when the author paints a picture for readers through words. The word imagery is associated with mental pictures. It means to use figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in a way that it magnetizes our physical senses.
