America is a country that is commonly appreciated by its citizens for the values that it fought for and stands by today. When new policies and ideas are brought forward and introduced to our society, proponents and opponents frequently rely on our historic values such as freedom, equality and democracy to support their stances. While capitalism is something that has always been important to the United States people, it is important that we don’t confuse the systems that should be accessible and guaranteed to all with the systems that are excludable and look to make a profit. This year being an election year means that the American people are confronted with many issues and disparities that plague our nation. One of these hot button topics is that of healthcare. The United States is the only developed nation without a universal healthcare system, but spends the most for health services. With so many Americans lacking the adequate care needed or facing bankruptcy due to piling medical bills, one must look at the health disparities that are causing this super power nation to inadequately serve its citizens.

Many would argue that here, in the United States, we have the best healthcare in the world. We benefit from the most up to date medical technologies, medications, and services. People come from every corner of the world to take advantage of our top notch physicians and facilities. But is this reputation warranted, and if so, at what cost? The average annual cost per US resident is $7,681; this comprises 16.2% of our gross domestic product. These costs rank us among the highest of industrialized nations (Lundy, 2010). Like many college students I have to pinch pennies to make it through school. Every last penny counts when budgeting my monetary supply.
