ASSESSMENTS – WHAT, WHEN AND HOW
As a new member of the team please see the information below to give a through understanding of the range of assessments methods used below. This information will help you to know what assessment methods should be used and why, as well as how to record assessments and assessments decisions.
(a) There are typically six assessment methods that we can chose to employ within your role. These are listed below along with examples of when and how they could be implemented:
Examination
This is considered as formal method of assessment, which may be carried out in the middle or at the end of course, or

A limitation of questioning is that the questions need to be appropriate and therefore planning must take place to anticipate responses.
Role Play
Through encouraging learners or athletes to act out a strategic activity or skill, the learner learns the drill in an informal manner. This also helps aid memory retention and muscle memory retention, especially for improving motor skills or conditioned behaviour.
The strengths are that role playing can be contained and can be started or stopped during the assessment. Role plays will also encourage teambuilding and can increase levels of confidence.
The limitations are that the skills are not applied in a real life situation, therefore more difficult to undertake when under pressure in real time.
(c) Here you will find an explanation of how 2 assessment methods can be adapted to meet individual learner needs.
Question and Answers
Adaptions can be made to questions to ensure inclusive learning. If a student is anxious in a group situation, questions can be asked on a 1:1 basis. Equally the questions can be adapted according to the level of the student, either low or stretch for higher level students.
Examination
A number of adaptions could occur within an examination. This may include the use of a scribe, or increased time limits if writing becomes difficult. We are also able to employ different coloured paper to aid dyslexic learners within exam
Assessment plays a significant role in the learning experience of students. It determines their progression through their programmes and enables them to demonstrate that they have achieved the intended learning outcomes. It is assessment that provides the main basis for public recognition of achievement, through the awarding of qualifications and/or credit.
There are a wide variety of techniques used for sampling the evidence of assessment which are all valuable for different reasons. Below are listed these different techniques
Unit 1- 1.1, 1.2-This is a reflective account of the things I have done, experience and knowledge I have gained throughout the assessor 's course mainly during the process of assessment. First, I would like to describe the definition of assessment, its key concepts, stages to show the knowledge and understanding I have gained throughout the course. An assessment is a pre-agreed formal session with the learner. Assessment is judging performance against an agreed standard and is also a way of finding out if learning has taken place. It enables yo assessor to ascertain if learner has gained
When planning assessment you need to gauge a clear idea of what level the candidate is at to see if they are ready to complete your planned assessment. There are many ways of achieving this knowledge. One method is observation in performance or another by taking an initial assessment test which have seven levels with the basic entry level 1 being the first.
Depending upon the subject being assessed and whether it is academic (theory) or vocational (practical) an assessor will usually follow the assessment cycle. The cycle will continue until all aspects of the qualification
The assessments have been done during and after the lesson in a variety of ways; verbal response, written response, pair and group work, and making posters as a visual outcome.
The down side of this is that learners may have only been taught what is needed to pass the exam and not retain any of the other theories they may need at a later stage.
Assessment is carried out through formative (checks throughout the course), ipsative (to test against previous marks), and/ or summative (at end of course) activities to help the learner see their development whilst allowing the Assessor to give valuable feedback when appropriate. It’s purpose is to measure the learners understanding of the subject against the anticipated outcomes set by the criteria.
Before you start working on this part of your assessment, carry out some planning by answering the following questions.
• Assessment Method: The learner has presented their outline in the form of a table. The learner’s outline includes the main
Assessment is used to make a specific educational decision and is the process of evaluating the extent to which participants in education
Assessment is carried out to ensure that learning has taken place. This is used to measures the learner’s knowledge and skills in their chosen area of learning. Assessment can be used to encourage learners to ask questions on anything they have not understood, learners at some point will have to know that they will have to prove their knowledge and understanding to the standards of the awarding body.
Although this is primarily for younger children this idea can be used straight through life-long learning. Assessment enables the teacher to see what objectives have been met and what still needs to be addressed. This is often called formative assessment or assessment for learning. ‘Assessment for Learning is the process of seeking and interpreting evidence for use by learners ad their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to go there’ (Assessment Reform Group, 2002).
