Finding out early which type of student you are will help you out in the long run. Traditional students tend to be more productive in school when it comes to doing work and actual attendance. They keep up on homework better and have less distractions, so they also tend to have a higher graduation rate then none traditional students. Additional students will have a higher stress rate from school induce stress than a nontraditional student. "However, the traditional students reported actually attending class more often, as well as worrying about school performance more often".(HENLEY, January 1998). Nontraditional students on the other hand tend to be affected less by school induced stressed and more by their problems outside of school. For example
Being a non-traditional student, I have the opportunity to attend school while also pursuing a career in Information Technology (IT). Within the field of IT there are many avenues to explore ethics depending on the type of business that is being supported, or what the technical specialty may be. For instance, if the business operates in a medical environment that treats patients, there are privacy concerns, and ethical standards that must be followed. The same can be said for the financial community, and education. While the breadth of Information Technology and the available specializations are vast, perhaps even more impressive are the amount of trust and ethical burden placed on the Information Technology professional.
Despite that the transfer and non-traditional students aren’t traditional students, they are in fact new and might not know every building. It would be my job to help them get situated. I will treat them like any other freshman student and provide my full attention to their needs. A transfer student may have transferred from another school in the country and being there for them will make the transition will be easier. They are different from traditional freshman even if they are first year students, they might’ve know their old campus perfectly well, but it would be my responsibility to make sure they can remember our campus as well. All campus aren’t the same, so I would personal show the transfer student around and make sure they know when
School-related stress has its roots in many different places. On a national scale, surveys and research have in fact confirmed that “school-related pressures were the primary source of stress for the majority of younger and older children” (qtd. in Blazer 2). Not long ago, kindergartens were places for children to play and learn basics, like the alphabet, but now all of it has changed to teaching kids about test taking, doing reading/writing exercises, and even homework (Blazer 4). In an article titled, “Success with Less Stress,” Jerusha Conner, an Assistant Professor of Education at Villanova University, and his partners conducted a study to find what students say about the causes of school stress. The research revealed that standardized tests, large assignments, and college admissions were very frequent answers. Exceeding competition has also caused stress among students because they feel the need to build the best résumé, and this leads to over-scheduled days (Redding). The modernization of the Collin’s theory states that, “the ‘overscheduling hypothesis’ embodies a more recent belief that it is the volume of activities that provides a boost in the application process and that students need
While working at Virginia College, which is a nontraditional college. I had similar issues and concerns. I found with my students. I was able to utilize my special educational background and skills in accommodating their needs and providing a variety of educational resources to assist them during their education process.
Students in higher or older grades are prone to having a much higher stress level than students and learners of a lower grade. Students are stressed because of the hard study work that they need to prepare themselves for before writing their exams. They also worry about getting their work done in time and having deadlines for projects and speeches. Many students feel as though they are unprepared or feel like they have not worked and studied hard
Recent studies indicate an increase in the numbers of nontraditional students returning to colleges; the enrollment of students ages 25 and older rose by 13 percent between 1997 and 2007. NCES (2009) reported that from 2006 to 2017, there will be a continual increase in enrollment to nearly 20 percent for this age group (Bonner et al., 2015; Kenner & Weinerman, 2011; Ross-Gordon, 2011). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) there are 162.3 million people in the United States and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning claims that 38 million working adults 25 and older have taken some college courses but have not completed a degree (Bergman et al., 2014). Today, more
The college student population in the past decade has seen a huge shift from the traditional college student, typically 18 years old and recent high school graduate, to nontraditional college students, including: part time, independent, older adults, and parent college students. Not only are these nontraditional college students faced with the same concerns, struggles, and difficulties as traditional college students but they also have additional responsibilities and struggles that a traditional college student won’t have. In particular, the parent college student is faced with a multitude of added stressors outside of school and in today’s colleges there are approximately 3.9 million student parents which make up about 30% of the college
Hello, Dr. Chapman, I'm a senior at UNC Greensboro, and this program is number one on my list of graduate schools to apply to for the Spring 2018 term. I'm interested in studying first generation students and non traditional community college students. Are there any professors that also have this research interest, or a similar interest? Thanks for your time.
At Preston High School students and teachers were surveyed on stress levels from each schedule. They were also surveyed on which schedule they thought was more effective for learning. A consensus between all of the students and teachers agreed that the block schedule was more effective for learning (8). They also all agreed that an eight period day proved significantly more stressful when compared to their amount of stress in a four period day (8).
I started my life as a foreign student in 2009, and earned my bachelor degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on health science at California State University, San Marcos in 2015. The challenges for nontraditional students was vast; nonetheless, all my experiences have become key aspects of my life, and each of them molded me to become the individual I am today. So far, I am confident that I fit into the biotechnology program at California State University, San Marcos by reason of I gain passion and ability to conduct researches, academic confidence , leadership experience, and experience with diverse
Generalized anxiety is a problem that the United States faces nationwide. As we grow older and move into educational settings that are more taxing, anxiety becomes more prevalent. Today, college students are facing more stress than ever before. They are constantly pushed to be the best they can be, to be in the most extracurricular activities they can be in, and to attend the best schools possible. All of these goals and high expectations lead students to be harder on themselves, which makes other aspects of their life fall by the wayside, leading to high levels of stress and pressure.
The trends I see in my transcript are every 1st semester I do poorly but every 2nd semester I'm doing so much better. The easiest class I have time with is history because it's so interesting and it really grabs my attention and I feel obligated to pay attention. The hardest class I have time with would be math because sometimes I don't understand it and I fall behind and I feel lost so I don't try anymore and lose track of my assignments. None of these trends are caused by social problems or my own problems. They are just my habits of school learning.
A very important factor of stress is school. School can cause a lot of stress. "One of the greatest sources of pressure is school. Where we are herded like cattle from room to room, chewing on our cud, while the hay of knowledge is force fed to us as we are trying our hardest to gulp it down as more and more is shovelled in"( ).Grades can act upon stress. Students may think that you always need good grades, parents can cause this or even just their own minds. Teens want to get into a good college so they stress. "Stress is created by parental pressure to perform and to stand out among other children. When they can't rise up to that expectation, or during the process of meeting it, children may suffer from frustration, physical stress, aggression, undesirable complexes, and depression"( ). Students who are involved in extra activities, usually develope unfriendliness, jealousy, shyness, and may become loners ( ). "Over scheduling a student's life can put them under stress. A child's in school and after school activities should be carefully arranged to give them some breathing space. Parents may want him to learn music, painting, or be outstanding in a
Nontraditional student numbers continue to rise on college campuses and few institutions meet the mental health needs for this special group of students (Carney-Crompton & Tan, 2002). It is the purpose of this study to examine both the stressors (i.e. triggers of the stress response) and perceived stress levels between traditional and nontraditional students.
Nowadays, education is becoming one of the fundamental things in a human lifetime; most people are trying to achieve a higher education. As technology develops considerably, it has bearings on every area of our life, even in the way of education. The development of technology has a large impact on education. Before this progression of technology, the education system was only traditional. Currently, the education system has been changed. The development of technology has allowed the education system online along with traditionally. Traditional and online instructions are both great ways to learn. While both types of instructions have the same purpose of educating students having good skills about everything, but there are some significant differences between them such as flexibility, learning the course content, communication, and the cost.
