Lee and Conolly shows the audience that courage tend to come in diverge forms. One form is physical courage. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus demonstrates courage in a physical sense as he finds himself in a face off with a loose rabid dog, only armed with a shotgun. "For God's sake, Mr. Finch, look where he is! Miss and you'll go straight into the Radley house! I can't shoot that well and you know it!...I haven't shot a gun in thirty years." This quote reveals the intensity of the situation due to the fact that there are innocent lives involved as a result Heck turns the gun over to Atticus. He accepts the responsibility despite the fact that he has not handled a gun in years. After, putting the sick dog to rest, he receives great …show more content…
Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time." This quote shows the readers that physical courage tend to be rewarded by admiration such as positive comments. However, Atticus dismisses these comments, "Didn't you know that your daddy's... Hush, Heck, said Atticus, let's go back to town." As a result, his son Jem, makes the conclusion that, "I reckon if he'd wanted us to know it, he'da told us. If he was proud of it , he'da told us." These quotes tells the audience that Atticus does not want to be praised for having the courage to take another life as he does not believe that this is true courage. Physical courage is mirrored in the film, Balibo however, Conolly has taken this concept in a different direction. Roger East classifies himself as an outdated journalist because of his age. After, the helicopter attack, the audience is shown a close up shot of East lying on the ground, breathing heavily as he says, "I want to go home, I want to go to Australia. I can't do this, mate. I told you, you need somebody young. I can't do …show more content…
Someone who is much more capable than he is and had more to offer than he was and could. Lee and Conolly show the audience the idea of physical courage because this has become the most common form of courage. Courage is often associated with an idea of a 'hero', who has tremendous strengths and abilities. An individual who performs outstandingly under extreme pressure and saves the day. Heroes tend to be romanticized in the media as they wear costumes and a cape saving those in danger. This idea is contrasted in the novel and film. Lee teaches the audience that the true meaning of courage is not about displaying your abilities for admiration whereas, Conolly educates the audience that courage is not determined by your age and physical abilities. Secondly, moral courage is another form of courage. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus portrays moral courage as he tackles the case of Tom Robinson against Maycomb's disease. Atticus teaches Jem a lesson induced by his upcoming trial when he says, "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter
“To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a novel that explores the theme of courage throughout key events and through character. The novel is narrated by Jen-Louise Finch over a two year period revolving mainly around the trial of Tom Robinson.
It’s when you know your licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew.”
Courage is defined as "the quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or opposition with fearlessness." According to Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." (pg.121). Harper Lee clearly portrays the theme of courage in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. One likes to think of a hero, as strong, brave, and meeting all challenges head on. All the characters in this book have a different view as to what courage
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”(Lee 149) This quote is from Atticus Finch and this is the definition of what a courage is. This specific quote will affect the characters throughout the book. “Courage is daring to do what is right in spite of the weakness of our flesh” This quote is by Preacher Green in The Help and this is also an accurate definition of courage. Through Dialogue both To Kill A Mockingbird and The Help was equally accurate conveying courage. Courage is not a man with a gun but doing and standing up for what is right despite our disadvantages or
“Real courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” Atticus Finch. This quote is proved to be true in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee as it demonstrates the true definition of courage. The book takes you along the journey of young girl, Scout Finch, during a time where colored people are thought less of. She experiences this first hand as her father, Atticus Finch, has been assigned to defend a colored man who has been accused of raping a white female. Scout along with her elder brother Jem, learn the definition of courage through some of the characters and how they act to the events that occur before and after the trial. In Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, many characters are great examples of trusting yourself when all odds are stacked against you. Throughout the novel the characters that display courage are Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley.
Our world suffers with many issues such as racism, sexism, hate and prejudice, and society needs people that are strong enough to take a stand. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is displayed in several different forms, especially through three courageous characters. Lee introduces the concept of honorable courage through Mrs. Dubose, a woman who demonstrates that real courage comes from within. Another brave character in the novel is Tom Robinson. He shows everyone how difficult it is for a black man to be both honest and kind no matter the situation. The most courageous person would be Atticus Finch. Atticus is an important character that fits into his own definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it in numerous ways throughout the novel, as he goes against most people’s beliefs in order to do what he believes is morally right. Through these three brave characters, Lee tries to reshape people's stereotypical view of courage.
In today's society, courage is defined as the ability to succeed without changing who we are as a person or what we believe in hoot courage, justice is weak and society is corrupt. In Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning novel "To Kill a Mockingbird', courage is presented through the characters Atticus Finch and Mrs Henry Lafayette Dubose as they confront their issues and embrace life regardless of what others think. Harper Lee constructed her narrative during a time of prejudice and injustice against Black Americans; hence courage was vital to overcome the racial discrimination many faced Both Atticus and Mrs Dubose along with the crucial events in the novel teach Jean Louise Finch, as well as the audience, the significance of courage and create an understanding that courage exists in several forms, Courage is often seen as the physical bravery an individual can display in a fearful H ever, it is also when an individual knows there is no chance of winning, but continues to fight for what they believe in. Harper Lee constructs a masculine image of this type of courage through Atticus and his handling of the mad dog incident. When comparing Atticus to the other fathers in Maycomb, Jam and Scout think of him as old and feeble' though the mad dog occurrence reveals a side of him that had not yet been discovered by his children; that he was once the best marksman the town with the name of one shot Finch'. Heck Tate insists that Atticus should kill the diseased animal even though
In To Kill a Mockingbird, one of Atticus Finch’s most significant qualities, courage, impacts the story. Throughout the book, Harper Lee portrays courage as doing something out of your comfort zone, for the greater good or a good cause. The first example shows how Atticus’s quality of courage impacts the story. Atticus is sitting in front of the jail cell where Tom Robinson, the African-American man he is defending, is being kept. When Mr. Cunningham and the rest of his followers confront Atticus, he stays strong, keeps his ground and doesn’t let anything happen to Tom. The interaction starts with Mr. Cunningham approaching Atticus, “He in there, Mr. Finch? He is, and he’s asleep. Don’t wake him up. In obedience to my father. There followed what I later realized was a sickeningly comic aspect of an unfunny situation: the men talked in near-whispers. You know what we want. Get Aside from the door, Mr. Finch. You can turn around and go home, Walter. Heck Tate’s around somewhere.”(171-172) Atticus stops Mr. Cunningham and his men from harming Tom before his trial. It took courage to stand up to men who are usually cordial with him resulting in Tom not being killed and allowing the trial to continue. In the second example, it shows how Atticus’s actions reflect what how Harper Lee believes courage looks like in everybody. Atticus is brought to a tough decision in whether or whether not to defend Tom Robinson. When Scout asks him about the case and why he decided
This shows a very strong example of how Harper Lee uses moral courage. “You know the court appointed him to defend this nigger.” “Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. That’s what I don’t like about it” (218). This quote supports my claim of Atticus having the moral courage because Atticus knows no one in Maycomb county likes the fact that he is defending an African American man to the best of his ability to save Tom Robinson’s life. Also another example is when Atticus talked to Scout and Jem about why he took on the case and didn’t back down. “Every lawyer gets one case in a lifetime that affects him personally, this one's mine I guess” (101). This quote is similar to my claim and shows how Harper Lee demonstrated courage in his characters because Atticus knew that this case would affect him personally because this was his first time defending an African American man. Atticus knew he would lose respect from the Maycomb community and there would be problems before and after the case was finished but he continued to defend Tom. Another example of how characterization was used by the use of mood is when Atticus killed the mad dog. “I haven’t shot a gun in 30 years-” (99). “ Besides that, he wore glasses. He was nearly blind in his left eye” (99). These quotes show courageous because Atticus wasn’t the only one that seen the mad dog. The sheriff of Maycomb, Calpurnia, Jem, Scout and others were at the scene too. Although sheriff Heck Tate was there, he wasn’t the one that killed the dog. Even though he was nervous because he hasn’t shot a gun in thirty years, Atticus shot him. Additionally he could barely see out of his left eye, the only eye he could really see out of was his right. He took this shot not knowing if he would hit him or miss, endangering himself and others. However, he was a hero that day and saved their
Courage can be defined in different ways as shown by Anne Sexton’s “Courage” poem and Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Sexton would say courage comes in small acts and in these small acts of courage are what teaches people how to find the strength within themselves to accept things the way they are. Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in the novel, would argue that courage is perseverance and fighting till the end even though the battle may have already been lost. This novel takes place around the 1930s, and is told through the eyes of Scout Finch. From her, one might learn about her father, Atticus Finch, an attorney who hopelessly aims to prove the innocence of a black man wrongly accused of rape. Both definitions of courage can be found in three characters in the novel; Atticus’ determination to help Robinson, Scout’s ability to conceal her emotions, and Mrs. Dubose’s perseverance to fight till the end.
In addition, Jem is faced with a courageous situation in regards to the Radley house. His courage stems from fear of receiving a whipping from Atticus, and more important, his disapproval. Jem is willing to risk his life in order to save his father from showing disappointment. The threat of Mr. Radley waiting for the intruder with his gun instills fear within Jem. However, Jem overcomes this fear in order to sustain Atticus' faith. Being the only and eldest son places pressure upon Jem to set an example and implant pride within his father. The possibility of being shot is an obstacle Jem must overcome with mental courage, which he does. Lastly, Jem also shows mental courage when he stops himself from bragging about Atticus and how he was a very good shooter. When Atticus shot the mad dog, Jem found out that his father was a very good shooter and he wanted to tell everyone in school about it. But, he knew that Atticus did not consider a man with a gun in his hand real courage and so Jem kept quiet and did not brag about it, which took mental discipline and courage on his part.
This incident, also showed that it takes true bravery from Atticus to be able to fight for a man of a different race, knowing his children’s safety is at risk. Throughout the trial, Atticus’ family endured glares and taunts from people in town, just because they were related to someone defending a person of a different color. Additionally, Atticus safety was tested when one night a mob came and tried to attack Tom Robbinson in jail. Atticus stood his ground and showed unbelievable bravery against the group of men. “ You can turn around and go home, Walter.”
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you anyway and you see it through no matter what." (Lee p. 128) To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee about two children named Scout and Jem and their father Atticus Finch.
