The Cell Phone Revolution Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the world has become a smaller place. The time used to travel to far distances has diminished; with the growth of new technologies, traveling and communicating have become simple daily tasks for many people. Through the growth of global communication, people have become closer to others across the globe, and business has gone world wide. One invention that came along with the technological revolution is the cell phone. Cell phones allow us to be reachable anywhere at anytime, letting us communicate even during travel. As time becomes more valuable for people, the importance of accessibility to communication also increases. With cell phones, the communication and …show more content…
in Bermant). Although many of these new technologies are possible and useful because of the cell phone, there are some downsides that come with this device. One downside is the danger of cell phones usage while operating mechanical vehicles such as cars. Because cell phones let us be so mobile, they also let us talk in situations where we are doing something else. While a person is in the middle of a discussion, he can be distracted from anything else he is doing. According to study published in "the New England Journal of Medicine," the chances of getting into an accident while on a cell phone are increased by "four hundred percent (qtd. in Hua)." Another study that was done by scientists in the "transport research laboratory" suggested that driving while using a cell phone is more hazardous then driving under the influence of alcohol at the permitted blood alcohol content level. The study says that a person on the cell phone reacts half a second slower than an alert driver (qtd. in Wrolstad). Considering the results of the research, more legislation is needed for cell phone usage, possibly banning or limiting the usage of cell phones during situations calling for a person's full attention. Another disadvantage of cell phones is the radiation they cause. Every cell phone creates an "electro magnetic field (EMF)" when it is connecting to the local antenna. This EMF radiation can range from "1.55 SAR (specific absorption rate of radio frequency
We all are probably aware that texting and talking on the phone is a distraction to all drivers and can be very dangerous. Also, we all know there are many other distractions besides texting and driving, and any type of technology can cause a driver to be distracted. Forty-one percent of all drivers use their hands to text in the car while driving, according to Greg Gardner (52). It can cause people to forget about pedestrians or their surrounding areas. People who are distracted often aren’t focused and don’t have both hands on the wheel. According to Bryan Wilson, people may say that cell phones are easy to be pointed out as a problem, but statistics show the damage cell phones can do to a person while they are driving (6). According to Simon Usborne, time spent not looking at the road while talking on the phone is 15% of the time (68). Also, while texting and driving the time spent not looking at the road is 30% of the time (Usborne 69). As technology improves more and more people may feel the need to use their cell phones while driving. According to Melissa Healy, cell phone use can be as dangerous as drunk driving (42). Tests should be done to compare the various ways of sober people under the influence driving also to compare the impact of texting and driving. This would give us a better understanding of just how dangerous driving and being on our phone really is.
Is the use of a cell phone worth the risk on the roadway? Cell phones have become an integral part of our daily life. With the increase of technology of cell phones, it makes our daily lives easier and more efficient. Multitasking results in those tasks competing for the driver’s attention, diverting the driver’s attention away from the roadway. The use of cell phones of any kind impairs a driver’s decision-making ability. The driver’s attention and their ability to process anything besides driving are suppressed. Their mind is divided as soon as their attention is focused on the obsession of their cell phone rather than the road. Cell phone drivers are stretched beyond safe limits when multitasking of driving and talking or texting with a cell phone which then becomes unsafe. Most drivers over-estimate their capability to safely multitask and assuming they have this ability is a hazard. Is it really worth it to endanger yourself or others while driving with a cell phone? Some people don 't realize the danger of this until something happens to them, a family member, or friend of theirs.
5. Potential health hazards: People who use mobile devices while driving are often distracted from driving and are thus assumed more likely to be involved in traffic accidents. (While this may seem obvious, there is considerable discussion about whether banning mobile device use while driving reduces accidents or not.) Cell phones may interfere with sensitive medical devices. Questions concerning mobile phone radiation and heath have been
With new technology being introduced on almost a daily basis, it needs to be decided what ways are safe to use that technology. Advanced technology has created an abundance of things that can be used while driving. The most popular technology used while driving is the cell phone. Although it was invented in the 1970s, the cell phone did not gain momentum until the 2000s. Even during its first days, the effect of a cell phone distraction was already in the spotlight (Brown, Tickner & Simmonds, 1969). Allowing people to talk wherever and whenever, it became important to ensure this technology was not harming society. Driving is a complex cognitive task. Since its use boomed in the 21st century, several road problems and accidents were linked
“In homes, in social settings, and at workplaces, where people once interacted with each other and engaged in actual conversation, silence has now taken over as everyone’s attention is dominated by their email, their text messages, and their social media.” Nowadays, many cannot imagine life without a cellphone. Yet, as much has cellphones have plenty of pros, they also come with a whole lot of cons. In what ways are cellphones changing the way we live today?
After analyzing how the brain and reaction time are severely effected by the distraction that cell phones cause, it is important to view the health effects that results from the car crashes. Injuries ranging from mild to severe, or even death, can occur as a direct result of crashing the vehicle while distracted by cell phone use. In the study by McEvoy, the objective was to explore the effect of drivers’ use of cell phones on road safety. In order to research
Tom and Ray Magliozzi (n.d) indicate that the drivers who use cell phones while driving have four times higher chances of causing an accident as compared to the drivers who choose not to use the mobile phone while driving. This is closely paralleled with
Do you use your cell phone while you drive? No? Good. Most people who do are well aware of the consequences, but think that they would never happen to them. Our reliance on these devices has led to a rise in use by drivers, increasing the risk of car accidents and fatalities immensely. The main concerns, which puts us at jeopardy, are drivers having to take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel, in order to efficiently text, dial, change a song, etc. Also, people can be so consumed in what they are communicating that they lose their focus on driving, interrupting their effective driving. Although cellphones play a significant role in our society, the hazards they present should be taken further into consideration when getting behind
Calling or texting while driving is very dangerous that can lead to tragedies. For example, some tragedies can be deaths or physical impairment. Also, reducing the use of electronic devices while behind the wheel is a benefit that can lower car crashes on the road. Finally, taking a ride or driving without cell phones gives an advantage to be more focus on the road, and to be more aware about the surrounding. It is important to emphasize that distracted drivers on the road can be really hazardous for everyone that is driven around them. Calling or texting while driving can cause a serious accidents that can have a devastating effect on a person on his or her family. Eliminating the cell phone use while behind the wheel makes people to be more safer and confident while driving or taking a ride. It seems evident that cell phones use while driving are a distraction because it takes away the visual, manual and cognitive focused on the road. People should avoid using their cell phones while
Netzley describes how do cell phones can cause serious problems such as car accidents. According to the book, “cell phone users between ages of sixteen and nineteen are responsible for more than 20 percent of fatal car crashes in the United States”(Netzley 24). He explained why that happens and how do cell phones impact people while driving.
Have you ever wondered what would the world resemble in the event that we didn 't have any cell phones? Why is it that we get out of our comfort zone when we do not have access to our phones? Nowadays, cell phones have such a noteworthy effect on our day to day lives, and we owe it to the advancement of technology. In this research paper, we will take a closer look at this phenomenon by examining the evolution of cell phone devices, and it’s effects on society.
The use of cell phone is very dangerous for drivers while driving. The drivers are supposed to be alert and concentrated to their ambient surrounding. The use of cell phone catch their attention and make them less alert to their surrounding which can lead to serious destruction. The use of cell phone is more dangerous than the use of alcohol while driving. Because it took half a second longer for a cell phone users to react than a normal person and one third of a second longer than a persons in drunken condition.

alone every year. The issue of driving while talking on a cell phone has become serious enough that five states have passed laws prohibiting this type of act and making it a primary offense to do so. Not only are drivers talking behind the wheel, but many have admitted to engaging in even more potentially dangerous behavior with their phones such as text messaging and surfing the internet. A distracted driver is a dangerous one. If you are focused on a conversation and your eyes are not on the road, drivers cannot be expected to make a quick and safe decision should the need for one arise. The behavior of a driver while using a cell phone has been compared to that of one driving while under the influence. Studies have shown that those who use a cell phone while driving are four times more likely to be involved in a crash than those who don’t.
