Theodore Roosevelt's Presidential Years

Theodore Roosevelt was only 43 when he became president. He was the 26th president. His term went from 1905 - 1909. The US had never had a president so young. He was given the Nobel Peace Prize and when he left office he took an African Safari. He was also shot after he left office trying to campaign in Wisconsin. He survived the gunshot.

He is well known for his temperament, interests, and achievements. Although there were no wars at the time, his slogan was reinforced by sending the expanded US Navy and the Great White Fleet on a world tour. “TR negotiated an end to the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize. One of these ways was by protecting the natural beauty of America so that it would not be entirely depleted before it could replenish itself. He was given the nickname Teddy by his parents Theodore and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt and his three brothers and sisters. Suffering with asthma and weak eyesight, he actively engaged in sports such as boxing and horseback riding in order to strengthen himself. His youthful fascination with nature led him to spend as much time as possible outdoors. Private tutors educated him until entering Harvard University, where he had began to work on his first historical book, The Naval War of 1812 (1882). His book was made a reading requirement to be able to join the Naval Academy in Annapolis for many years.

In 1904 Roosevelt was re-elected for a second term in office. In 1906, he passed the Pure Food and Drug act. This group of laws protected American consumers from harmful food, drugs, and cosmetics. Roosevelt took advantage of his presidential powers to bust into foreign affairs in Latin America and resolved the Russo- Japanese war. This valiant act earned him a Nobel Peace Prize.
