In “Bless me, Ultima” Rudolfo Anaya created pathos throughout the story with different techniques. Pathos is a form of convincing the readers of an argument and forming an emotional response. Rudolfo Anaya uses three techniques to create pathos, he uses a pathetic situation, actual life, and goth and grotesque. A pathetic situation creates emotional response with a well-developed character. Actual life is created by the writer making the reader feel as if there in the position of the character or see it happening around in real life. In the novel a pathetic situation was created when Tenorio kills Ultima’s spiritual owl. There are many different techniques to create actual life in novel. This can be done by character development, emotional response, setting, writing style and many more. In the novel “Bless me, Ultima” Rudolfo Anaya created actual life when Antonio’s parents want him to grow up to be what they want, and he is in a tight as to who he should grow up and be to make happy. His mother Maria wants him to be a farmer and priest like in her town, while his father Gabriel wants him to be a wild man like he was in the Llano. Antonio feels pressured throughout the book to pick who he is going to grow up to be and who he will disappoint. This is actual life by being in his shoes. My parents want me to be a doctor since we have many doctors in the family, yet I do not have the mentality and the ambition to be competitive to become a doctor. Many kids around the world are being pressured to follow in their parent’s footsteps. As kids we know that our parents want what is best for us making us feel like we do not have an option in what we want to become when we grow up. We feel the pressure that if we do follow what we want to be our will not accept us or they will just feel disappointed in us, and that is a burden many kid’s today do not want to
