The average student in a developed country spends 17.7 years in school. Generally, their success within these years of learning is measured by their grades and development but rarely on success in their careers after school. However, despite what many teachers stress to their students, being successful in school does not ensure a successful career in business as this success requires different skills and personality traits. A narrow view is often taken where only western countries are compared. When interpretation of evidence is more international, the understanding of data can change. Business success is looked upon by professionals as personal success and satisfaction, financial success, social prospects (charitable organisation), longevity, and customer/employee satisfaction. The most relevant of these are financial success and longevity and these will be the references to business success throughout the following paragraphs.
Being successful in business requires a plethora of different skills and personal attributes, vastly different to those taught in schools. The majority of the skills professionals believe are necessary for business are not picked up by students during their school years but are gained through real life experiences. According to the Government of Queensland, essential business skills include managing finance and staff, leading a team, networking, ability to comply with legal requirements, productivity, marketing, communication, initiative and creativity. Skills such as basic written and verbal communication are taught in the Australian curriculum, however many of these other essential business skills are not. For example, the skill of being able to manage taxes and book-keep for a business (managing finance) is not taught in the curriculum for a year 10 student. The ability to take initiative and make the most of opportunities is more about attitude and personality and is not something that can be taught.
