The Odyssey Comparison The Hero’s Journey is portrayed and widely known in many of the most popular films, songs, and novels. The Odyssey follows this format, and many of these entertainment pieces were inspired by this epic, such as The Chronicles of Narnia. He finds himself and his crew in many situations that lead to death or put them in danger, before eventually making it home and being reunite with his family with the help of the goddess Athena. The Chronicles of Narnia was inspired by The Odyssey, as it follows the Hero’s Journey and additionally has similar events to The Odyssey. The Chronicles of Narnia can be found to be similar or even somewhat inspired by The Odyssey. The two pieces both follow closely with the Hero’s Journey; in the beginning of the story, the older Pevensie children deny what Lucy says about what’s in the wardrobe and refuse to go see it with her, before they eventually have to enter it after hiding from the owner of the house. Similarly, in The Odyssey, Odysseus is at first reluctant to go to war, but eventually must as Agamemnon discovers he is capable of going to war and forces him to go with. In The Chronicles of Narnia, the children have the supernatural helpers the lion and Mr. Tumnus, similar to how Odysseus had Athena, and in both cases these helpers aided them …show more content…
In Narnia, a change in character could clearly be seen from the beginning to the end of the story. Each of the kids had learned their own lesson from their journey, and became better, wiser people from this journey. However, in The Odyssey, Odysseus did not show any change. He continued to make the same mistakes of getting his crew into trouble, and did not come home a changed man with different morals than he had left with. Furthermore, the children in Narnia did not want to return home from their journey, it had happened by accident. In The Odyssey, Odysseus had been working on returning home for 20 years and wants to return home as soon as possible. The differences between these two stories were made to differentiate between the different tales, instead of having each story be the exact same setup. These differences are what allow the Hero’s Journey to be used as a basis for each story, but still allow the stories to be different and have their own characteristics. Ultimately, the two pieces follow the same structure, but still have their own differences within this structure. The Chronicles of Narnia and The Odyssey share both similarities and differences between the two pieces; both having similar events that take places of certain archetypes, but also having different variations of a certain situation in the story. Narnia follows the Hero’s Journey closely and moreover
In “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is on a journey home to Ithaca after helping the Greeks win the Trojan War. The “Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell represents the difficult journey a hero must go on to defeat the “final battle,” meaning that he must overcome a really difficult challenge to complete his journey and restore the world. In “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus experiences significant events on his journey home to Ithaca which includes Entering the Unknown; he receives Supernatural Aid; and he experiences the Supreme Ordeal related to Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey.”
The Odyssey English Final Essay The story of Homer's the Odyssey is and is not a heroic story; Odysseus is a hero because of his return; however it is also not a heroic journey because he cheated on his wife and the lack of a treasure One of the reason that the Odyssey is considered a heroic journey is because of Odysseus return from his long journey. When Odysseus returns, the workers are overjoyed and wake up Penelope saying, "Wake up, Penelope, my dear child, so you can see for yourself with your own eyes what you've been wanting each and every day. Odysseus has arrived" (Homer, Book 23, line 70).
Specifically, three parallels surface in the discussion of the similarities between Homer’s classic epic and O Brother, Where Art Thou. Each story contains a comparable scene of the Cyclops. Also, the more familiar comparison is between the Lotus Eaters portrayed in each piece of work. But the strongest similarity that is between The Odyssey and O Brother, Where Art Thou is correlation of the Sirens and the witch goddess Circe.
Published in the 8th century B.C.E and 1997 respectively, both The Odyssey by Homer and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J. K. Rowling are universally known arts of literature. The Hero’s Journey is a commonly used trope incorporated in numerous amounts of tales. This trope involves a hero who goes on a journey, finds himself in a crisis, defeats his enemies, and comes home changed. Harry Potter, the main character in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, encounters many conflicts and meets helpful mentors on his adventure. Similarly, Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey, encounters various monsters and obstacles, too. Both Harry Potter and the
Another theme of an epic that the Odyssey and Finding Nemo share is the characters that assist Odysseus and Marlin along the way. Odysseus had the help of Athena, Hermes, Eumaus and many others on his long and rough journey to Ithaca (Homer). If Odysseus would not have had their help, he might not have made home. Marlin also had his share of friends to help him along the way, such as Dory, who was with him every step of the way, the sea turtles, who helped him on the East Australian Current, and the Pelican, who kept Marlin from being eaten and took him to Nemo (Stanton). Just like Odysseus, Marlin would not have been able to save his son without the help of the others along the way.
The amazing epic poem by Homer entitled “The Odyssey” shares many similarities and many differences as well with the Hallmark movie of the same name. The epic poem is about the hero Odysseus who has spent twenty long years filled with toil and loss, through war and sea desperate to return to his home of Ithaca. Odysseus has angered some of the gods and goddesses of a Greek Mythology with his destruction of the mighty city of Troy. Odysseus is represented in the poem and the movie, but there are several differences between the two in the events he encountered. There are also numerous similarities
The Lord of the Rings and Odyssey are two very weird stories in my opinion. The two stories include several similarities. The most noteworthy similarity of the two that were in common was the use of themes. Both included similar themes such as, life, death, power, brotherly love, myth, temptation, and journey.
Both the Odyssey and the Aeneid describe the journeys of the two Greek heroes –Odysseus and Aeneas, as they struggle towards their goal through the crises and deadly situations caused by the wrath of the gods upon them. In the Odyssey, we see that Poseidon (god of the sea/earth shaker) has a grudge against Odysseus while Athena, god of wisdom, aids him throughout his journey. Similarly in the Aeneid, we see that goddess Juno dislikes Aeneas as he is destined to destroy the city of Carthage loved by Juno during his mission to find a new land- Rome, whereas Aeneas’ mother Venus aids him.
Tales, Creatures and mythical adventures tells the story of Percy Jackson and Odysseus. Their both known as courageous heroes. In their journeys they both share motivation, adventures and assistance. However they have different roles in their characters. In there perspective of their adventures Percy and Odyssey had a motivation to start a mission and they had similar barriers throughout their experience.
Throughout the novels The Odyssey by Homer and the book Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier we find many similarities. Some consist of character traits while, others may consist of events that happened. Despite there being the obvious difference in the time frame they were written by their authors, we can all agree on the fact that both Homer and Frazier portray the use of some of the same ideas within both of the book's protagonists, Inman and Odysseus. Some of the things they have in common would be having for example similar themes, character traits, Inman’s and Odysseus’s ultimate destination, and how they had help along their eventful journey, as well and after the journey in Inman’s case.
The Odyssey is nearly 2,800 years old. O Brother, Where Art Thou? was released nearly 16 years ago. For these reasons, it may be hard to believe that an old text like The Odyssey could be portrayed in a contemporary film. However, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, a film based on the events in The Odyssey, opposes this idea. Although it is not an identical copy of The Odyssey, O Brother, Where Art Thou? takes its main character, Ulysses Everett McGill, and puts him through situations similar to those Odysseus endured. The most prominent similarity between The Odyssey and O Brother, Where Art Thou? is their main
Books in today's society portrays a lot of different plots, but the book the Odyssey helps portray features of an epic hero and that hero is Odysseus. Odysseus helps portray features of an epic hero by emerging victorious from dangerous encounters, using craftiness, and by embodying admirable values. The odyssey helps portray by using features of epic hero such as when Odysseus emerges victorious from dangerous encounters. One of the many dangerous encounters that odysseus faced in the story was when odysseus and his crew went through the sirens island, they put in bee’s wax in their ears and when the sirens came they were in terrible danger but thanks to odysseus the book said “So all rowed on until the Sirens dropped under the sea rim” (page 1134).
The Odyssey tells the story of an epic hero named Odysseus and the adventures he faced on his twenty year long journey away from his homeland Ithaca. The story begins in the final year of the Trojan War. The Greeks have not been able to breach Troy’s walls for ten years until Odysseus came up with the idea of the trojan horse. After the Greeks defeated the Trojans in such a ruthless way the gods were angered and made their journey home a very difficult one. Throughout their journey home Odysseus shows traits of bravery, wisdom, and loyalty as a great leader. Bravery is one of the few heroic traits that Odysseus shows.
In both stories, the main characters fight for love. In The Odyssey, Odysseus, the confident king
In most cases, after someone watches a movie based off a book, they would acknowledge that the book was better than the movie. I would agree that the epic poem, The Odyssey by Homer is much better in providing details, Odysseus’ strengths and weaknesses, and overall the journey that takes place in the story than the movie is, although it is entertaining. To begin, in the movie when Odysseus starts his journey towards home, he has one ship, whereas in the book, Odysseus has a fleet that came along, and in a series of events, he only ends up with one. They had sailed to the Land of the Laestrygonians in hope for rest, as they had just been blown far away from Ithaca with Aeolus’ bag of wind. The Laestrygonians were later revealed to be a race
