The Great Depression was a time of despair; however three men rose above and made history. The time period of 1929-1939 was an economic disaster for Americans (History.com 2009). An actor, an author, and a musician each inspired citizens during the Depression with their own unique skills. Their talents brought hope and happiness during a harsh time. All three men called Oklahoma “home” at one point in their lives. Will Rogers, Woody Guthrie, and John Steinbeck gave the common man someone to relate to during the Great Depression.

Will Rogers was influential through his humorous performances. He was a well-known actor and originally got his start by traveling with the Wild West Shows (PBS.com 1). By 1905 he had a famous lasso act that he took to Vaudeville (PBS.com 1). In 1916, he appeared on Broadway in the show The Wall Street Girl (PBS.com 1). He was adored by his fans because of his humor and endearing personality; consequently, “during his lifetime he was the single most popular and beloved man in America” (PBS.com 1). He did not trust the rich and famous or politicians (PBS.com 1) and this made him relatable to the average working man during the Great Depression.

His writings were based on his personal experiences during his time of doing manual labor for a living (FamousAuthors.org 2012). He truly understood the difficulties of the working class people during the Depression. Steinbeck was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his book, The Grapes of Wrath (FamousAuthors.com 2012). He was also awarded the Nobel Prize for literature (FamousAuthors.com 2012). The Grapes of Wrath was made into a movie, as well (FamousAuthors.com 2012).
