Ethical Considerations
Ethics is one of the most important considerations when making a decision about end of life. It is also where the most controversy lies as arguments, using ethical theories, can be made for and against laws on end of life. “Ethics has at least two primary functions: to guide our actions, and to provide justification for the guidance given” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p. 42). A duty-oriented ethicist would be against euthanasia and physician assisted death. They believe “we can’t stop all pain; what is crucial is that we act with dignity and respect in the face of suffering” (Edge & Groves, 2006, p.40). “Kant’s view is a person committing suicide takes the easy way out, where reason would dictate he or she face their problems” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p.38). Virtue ethicists would also be against euthanasia and physician assisted death. Virtue ethicists hold “it is not only important to do the right thing but equally to have the right disposition, motivation, and traits for being good and doing right” (Edge & Groves, 2006, p.43). As a believer in God, a virtue ethicist would hold suicide as an unreasonable option. They would believe God to be the “sole arbiter of life and death” (Schuklenk et al., 2011, p.42) and therefore, the right thing to do would be for God to end their life as he sees fit.
Contrary to these points is the belief in the protection of individual autonomy. Autonomy, as defined by Edge & Groves (2006), is the freedom to choose
Certain concepts that appear normally in everyday life sometimes contain an air of uncertainty relating to their true definitions. Typically any attempt at defining these themes results in the use of metaphorical phrasings or synonymic words. Thus no clear and constructive definition can be formed from these types of discussions. This phenomenon appears most often during in depth discussions of time, probability, and ethics. During this paper I will be focusing upon the last of these three topics. By exploring the three fields of ethical philosophy—metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics—and establishing how they connect with one another, will enable us to better understand the purpose behind ethical reasoning. It is important to explore this field because situations where the idea of a person’s actions being “good” or “bad” come up nearly constantly when observing society. But despite their common usage, the meaning behind such labels often remain ambiguous. Only through clarifying the true nature of such expressions will we understand their relevance to social interactions.
The two major ethical considerations that are important to address are 9.02 - Use of Assessments and 9.06 - Interpreting Assessment Results. 9.02 - Use of Assessments is particularly important because the psychologist must consider the individual’s language preference and competence. As was noted in the initial case description, Brandon’s parents are both Polish immigrants, and Brandon spoke Polish in home until he attended junior kindergarten. Although he may not have an accent, his language preference should be noted as English may not be the language he is more comfortable using. 9.06 - Interpreting Assessment Results should also be considered. Brandon’s test-taking abilities should be highlighted, as he is suspicious and ambivalent towards the psychological testing. These feelings may negatively affect his test scores, as he may try to either hide how he truly feels, or lie to make himself seem better or worse. It should also be noted that there could be other client characteristics that affect his scores as well, particularly cultural factors.
The life of prisoners some may never know. There are those who care not to know what goes on behind that wired fence. We find that some people that are convicted of crimes that they did not commit. Some people would rather turn their heads to what actually happens in a prison institution, because they feel it is no concern of theirs. Innocent women and men face a disaster in life when they find their selves incarcerated in such facility as these. The treatment in prison facilities toward prisoners with health issues or those who develop health concerns that
He has gained a lot of experience throughout his career thus far, and is looking forward to expanding his knowledge in the future. Dr. Lind believes that there are many ethical issues that involved in anthropology and the entire Code of Ethics is of importance. However, he believes it is key for practicing Anthropologist’s to understand not only their own Code of Ethics but any Code of Ethics that may be relevant in their currently work place. In addition, he placed a lot of emphasis of informed consent and not harming your subjects during research studies.
Ethics is a concept derived from an individual’s religion, philosophies or culture, forming a collection of moral principles carrying out the manner in which a person leads their life. In modern society philosophers divide ethical theories into three separate areas, meta-ethics, normative ethics and applied ethics. Meta-ethics refer to the origins and meanings of ethical principles, dealing with the nature of moral judgement. Normative ethics refers to what is right and wrong and concerned with the content of moral judgement. Rather applied ethics denotes to controversial ethical issues, often times polarizing our society, for instance animal rights.
When asked about ethics, some people may say, they are personal feelings that tell me what is right from wrong. One might also say, my ethics are in line with my moral values. The statements seem to contradict each other. This leaves us wondering, what are morals, and what are ethics. Which statement is correct? Are either of the statement correct? Are your ethics in line with moral values, or does it have to do with your feelings of right and wrong? There seems to be a bit of confusion about the two, so we must now look into what exactly, morals and ethics are.
The idea of being ethical shouldn’t only play a role in business fields, but also in a normal person’s everyday life. Being ethical pertains to what one thinks is right and wrong. For some one thing may be right while for others that same thing may be wrong, it all depends on your own beliefs and morals. In the accounting world being ethical deals with morals and embedding trust into a company. For small business investors, creditors and managers being ethical is a simple way of staying out of trouble, and is easier to distinguish between right and wrong. WorldCom was one of the biggest telecommunication company that our world h as seen and also had one of the largest accounting frauds in history. WorldCom was a company that did not stay ethical in their ways of doing business.
Research has had many benefits on people in the past, whether it has been to the benefit of the subjects, the researcher gaining a better understanding, or even to the benefit of larger communities. Unfortunately, poorly planned and conducted research has also harmed many people (Wilkinson, 2001). Ethical reasoning allows us to ensure that the circumstances in research are justifiable and that the people and the surroundings involved in the research are well looked after. It also enables us to think ahead of possible issues that might arise while conducting the investigation, empowering us to be prepared with potential solutions.
There are different legal right that govern our attitude and behavior in our society. In regards to virtue ethic is seemed to be too complex for many of us to bear because of the way it was introduced to our societies. There are laws that we have to follow, but there is a difference between laws and ethics. There are a lot of professional and non-professional levels of behaviors that met up with their target and achievement, but we use ethic to make our moral decisions in everyday life.
I would summarize the term ethics by saying that it is an absolute standard by which people live by. Ethics is this mentality or this inside voice that tells us what we should do versus what we actually do. Dr. Eckman states in “Christian Ethics” that the term ethics refers to a set of standards around which we organize our lives and from which we define our duties and obligations. Ethics is something we ought to do. In America we mix up the terms ethics and morality. Morality is what we actually do, and already do. In Matthew 22:33-40, it speaks about how as believers we should mirror those greatest commandments. We should love God with everything we have and love others.
Ethics can be described as the ideals and principles considered by individuals when determining acceptable behavior. Many individuals take into account socially established normalities and expectations when examining their own behavior. However, I find my ideals to be tied to Jean Paul Sartre’s existential views which assert that ethical behavior should be rooted in one’s personal rationalizations and a person’s actions should reflect free agency. Existentialism is a theory that stresses choice, freedom, and personal existence for the betterment of all of humanity. The existential idea that individuals possess the power and agency to shape their own lives (at least the decisions they make based off their circumstances) and one’s life is not determined by one’s existence relates to my personal philosophies of what constitutes ethical behavior. Each individual is dealt different circumstances in life, therefore a set list of rational ideals and values does not adequately address the what constitutes ethical behavior. I believe ethical behavior is constructed and justified through the existential elements of personal facticity and authenticity of individuals that work toward the peace and progression of all humanity; this is exhibited in Sartre’s play The Respectful Prostitute.
By selecting an ethical dilemma case from our text Corey, Corey, & Callanan, (2011), I will discuss how to apply systematic steps toward the resolution of the dilemma. While the case is under review the steps that I would take in making an ethical decision will be explained. Also, how to include the client in making the decision will be studied. I will look at what ways is accounting for the APA Ethics Code important for decision-making. In closing, the importance of each basic moral principle involved in the model of ethical decision-making will be addressed.
It really comes to no surprise that morals and ethics are an important concept in our daily lives. However despite being taught about things that are moral or ethical even from a young age they still have a large importance. Ethics as explained previously explained are a set of principles to better guide human behavior. Morals also function similarly. Morals assume that human nature has an affinity for good rather than evil and injustice. Combining these two principles morals and ethics make sure we make more human decision making not only in our careers but in our day to day lives.
Each one throughout this world needs something to stop him or her from doing what is wrong and to guide them to continue in a good way. Parents or anyone who is responsible for someone else can take this role. However, it is much important that the person himself is the one who control the situation. That come from inside, from something, cannot be described, yes ethics. Ethics is the thing that helps use without our feeling. So it must be inside each soul, in each situation in the life and even work.
Ethics have been taught to us by our elders, who learned their wisdom from their elders and so on throughout civilization. Lifestyles, social environments and BLANK have changed in one way or another to fit each generation. My generation has been fortunate enough to not have the same harsh racial oppression that Martin Luther King Jr. and so many others had to face. My ethical choices and decisions seem minor in comparison to the many stories and articles I’ve had the pleasure of reading this semester. Have you ever been given the opportunity to better yourself by hurting others around you? Did you ever have a chance to do something that didn’t have a direct consequence? You are given options in life; You decide whether you will do the right
