The Difference between Nurses and Doctors A person may ask if there is any difference between nurses and doctors. In some occasions, someone who is a nurse may be in a crowd of friends and someone mentions having a procedure done and ask the nurse about it, as the nurse explains the person might be surprised and tells the nurse you know more than a doctor. What can be done? Is there a difference between a nurse and a doctor? Many people have a misconception of the different types of medical personnel that are in this extensive field. Some nurses may expand their education to in the advance practice area getting their Master’s degree or even their Doctorate (Davis Company, 2015 pp 4-8) Doctors on the other hand must have a basic Bachelor’s degree or an advance degree completed and or undergraduate completed in ordered to apply to a medical school. All these programs of study does not have to be medical related it can be anything. To be accepted students must take the Medical College Administration Test (MCAT). Once student is accepted in to medical school studies may last 6 to 7 years as well as residency depending if they specialize in certain areas. Once graduated, graduates take the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) to be allowed to practice in a medical facility. (Physicians and Surgeons: Occupational Outlook Handbook) Scope of Practice and Characteristics Nurses have what is called a scope of practice that is the limitations that these nurses or can or cannot do. Some of the things nurses can do is administer medication and know some of the side effects it can bring about as the nurse gains experience. Nurses can also create a care plan this is based on the physicians medical diagnosis from there the nurse will assess the patient for any abnormalities doing a detailed assessment.
