It is portrayed most commonly within Bruno and Shmuel's friendship. Towards the end of the book Bruno begins to realise that the fence is separating them both for a reason, however this doesn't stop them from being friends. This shows that they would go through anything, including suffering, to be friends. The following quote shows how strong their friendship is at the end of the book, "Despite the mayhem that followed, Bruno found that he was still holding Shmuel's hand in his own and nothing in the world would have persuaded him to let go." (Page 213). Another display of friendship amidst suffering is demonstrated by Bruno's parents. At the beginning of the book their relationship is loving and healthy. Towards the end of the book, Bruno's mother discovers how the soldiers are treating the Jews. She becomes appalled and disliking of her husband, as he supports it and is not doing anything to stop it. The author is able to build a mood throughout the story by using the narrative technique of tone. It changes from the beginning to the end of the story. In the beginning of the story, Bruno is sad and angry that he is leaving behind his three best friends. He is arguing with his mom about it. “Say goodbye to Karl and Daniel and Martin? He continued, his voice coming dangerously close to shouting.” (pg. 7) This demonstrates how mad and angry Bruno is about moving. Friendship is a basic human need, especially for nine year old boys living their childhood. For Bruno who is lonely, bored out of his mind and could not find friends his age to play with and Shmuel a Jewish boy entrapped in a brutal concentration camp, their friendship is one of the only things that can spark a little happiness and lighten up their spirit. The boys meet in the least possible place – the periphery of Auschwitz concentration camp, where one is imprisoned and the other is the son of the Nazi commandant in charge. Although they are meant to see each other as enemies as a Jew and Nazi, there is no hatred between Bruno and Shmuel. First, On page 202 it says “ You still want to help me find Papa?’ asked Shmuel and Bruno nodded quickly” This shows that bruno is helpful and kind because he wants to help shmuel find his dad. This builds suspense because bruno is NOT ALLOWED to go on the other side of the fence with the jews. Secondly, On page 190 Bruno says “ I’d prefer all four of us to stay together” (When Bruno’s dad asked them if they wanted to move back to Berlin Bruno said he would go where the family went and wanted to stay together.) This is a revealing action about bruno because it shows how he is a caring person and wants to stay with his family. It builds suspense because his dad needs to stay because he is a soldier working. Lastly, On page 208 the author states “ When the soldier walked into the cabin Bruno said “ I don't think I like it here.” This reveals that Bruno does not like the life that shmuel lives and wants to go home. The next day where its raining and extremely muddy Bruno went to meetup with Shmuel at the fence to go on the search for Shmuel’s father . Finally Bruno was on the opposite side of the fence , as he was sneaking around trying to blend in with other people he never saw nothing like that seeing everyone looking miserable and skinny.

The next day Bruno creates a plan with Shmuel to sneak into the camp to look for Shmuel's father. Shmuel brings a set of prison clothes (which look to Bruno like striped pyjamas), and Bruno leaves his own clothes outside the fence. As they search the camp, both children are rounded up along with a group of prisoners on a "march". In the gas chamber, Bruno apologizes to Shmuel for not finding his father, and tells Shmuel that he is Bruno's best friend for life. Shmuel does not answer, as at that moment the door of the gas chamber is closed, it becomes dark, and all is chaos.

Bruno once saw people getting forced into a truck and naively wondered where they were going and why they were getting forced. Bruno’s family moved from Berlin to Out-With because of Bruno’s father’s work. Bruno looked out of the window at his new house and saw his dad walk to the other side of the fence. Bruno thought it was a farm and wondered why some people wore striped pajamas and some a uniform. Out of curiosity, he started to explore and met a boy on the other side of the fence and began to meet with him almost everyday. He learnt that the people wearing pajamas were scared of the people wearing a uniform because they were always yelling. Bruno noticed his dad wore a uniform but thought he could never be a bad soldier, but Shmuel thought otherwise, “‘There aren’t any good soldiers,’ said Shmuel’” (P.140). Bruno has a biased opinion about his father because he trusted him. Bruno does not understand certain things about the Holocaust and he did not know that during the Holocaust there were no nice Nazi soldiers. Bruno and Shmuel had similarities, and when Bruno shaved his head, they looked almost identical except that Shmuel was bruised, very skinny and always sad, “Bruno was sure that he had never seen a skinnier or sadder boy in his life.” (P.107) Bruno could not understand why, as he did not understand what kind of life Shmuel lived on the other side of the fence. Shmuel, went from being lonely and sad, to be more cheerful after meeting Bruno. Bruno gave him support, food and friendship things that he didn’t have inside the camp. One day, they planned to go and find Shmuel’s dad inside the camp and marched together with other people not knowing that they were marching to their death.

There have been a lot movies based in World War II.  The one that stands out the most is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  Made in 2008, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, is a Holocaust movie filmed from the frame of reference of an eight-year-old boy.  The director-writer, Mark Herman took the story of two boys, written by John Boyne, and developed a masterpiece (The Boy in).  With the use of these two boys, Mark Herman takes the divide of cultural bias and economic injustices and links them together.  The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is an accomplished film made with incredible character development, heart-warming acting, powerful viewpoint, and a meaningful message.
