Teenage Pregnancy
I. Introduction
Teenage pregnancy is one of the major problem that the world is facing today. Early pregnancy or teenage pregnancy is dangerous to teenage girls’ health because it may cause cervical cancer, aids, and eventually death. Teenage pregnancies are often associated with an increased rate of delinquent behaviors including alcohol and substance abuse. To begin with, majority of them belong to the low income group. To prevent this dilemma, there are some preventions that can reduce the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy. Firstly, parents must keep them at home with an intact family set-up, secondly, they must keep them at school, third, keep talking to them, and lastly, they must keep them morally and

Teenage pregnancy is a widespread issue in the Philippines, especially amongst the poor and it is an obvious rising issue in our society. Teaching sex education in schools can at least reduce the rising rate of teenage pregnancy. Sex education aims to reduce the risks of potentially negative outcomes from sexual behavior such as unplanned pregnancy and infection with sexually transmitted disease including HIV. Comprehensive Sexuality Education and the Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage are the two different types of sex education classes. The program that starts in kindergarten and finishes up to high school is the Comprehensive Sexuality Education that tackles the appropriate sexuality topics, safe sex, STDs, contraceptives and more. On the other hand, the Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage focuses on all sexual behaviors and it doesn’t tackle the information of contraceptives, STDs and more. Sex education should also be taught at home. As parents they provide sex education for their children. Each mother and father should teach their children about sex through attitudes, behavior and verbal comments. To be a good parent is a very difficult job, they need to make an effort to allow to talk about sex to enter normally in conversation. One way they can help with this is through honest and meaningful
Teen pregnancy is an issue in United States, it is one issue that should wait until teens are married and know what they are doing with their lives. This issue came about in the early in the 1950’s – 1960’s. Teen pregnancy is a teenage girl between the ages 13-19 (girls who haven’t reached adulthood) having unwanted or wanted babies. Janet Bode once stated in her book, “Emotions run everywhere, scared, sad, disappointment and preparation for what is about to happen” (Bode 51). If we do not act now, teen pregnancy will be out the roof. Teen pregnancy needs a stop put to it no matter what, teens are still children themselves and they are still learning how to take care of themselves:
There is presently much controversy regarding teenage pregnancy and the probability of its chances being reduced by education and good parenting. The surrounding environment plays an essential role when considering teenage pregnancy and it is thus very important for teenagers to be provided with proper education and a positive environment in order for them to be able to understand the difference between right and wrong. One of the most important things about teen pregnancy is that society as a whole needs to get actively involved in combating it, taking into account that it has a negative effect on the social order in general.
Sex education should be implemented at an early age beginning at the middle school level. A discussion of contraception, the risks of diseases, the risk of becoming an unwed teen parent and the disadvantages of not having an education will help decrease the number of teen pregnancies with future generations. Parents should not feel threatened of having their children learning about sex in class. Parents should feel empowered; it will allow their children opportunities to feel they are able to discuss future topics of sex at home to help promote
Everyone has their own way of rising children. This sometimes causes problems while deciding on what children should learn in school. While some schools cater to religion being taught the same thing is not set in place for sex education. Many believe that sex education is vital in today’s world. Meanwhile others feel that the sex talk should be left up to the parents. With pregnancy rates going up and adolescents getting pregnant younger soon there will not be a choice. One thing is certain that public schools should educate children in some way. Nevertheless not all parts of sex education will be accepted.
Each curriculum has a varying view on how sex education should be taught and when sex education should be taught to adolescents. Comprehensive sexuality education is the most effective type of sex education and followes the guidelines of starting sex education in kindergarten until twelfth grade. A broad range of topics are taught to students depending on their grade in order to help them develop vital skills and an understanding the varying topics. Abstinence-based sex education gives adolescence a broad range of knowledge on varying topics related to disease prevention and contraception with the emphasises that the best choice is to abstain from sex. Abstinence-only education promotes that abstaining from sex is the only way and does not address contraception or disease prevention. Abstinence-only-until-marriage sex education teaches adolescents that marriage is the only time sexual activities can take place and that in order to prevent disease and teen pregnancy refraining from sex until marriage is the only choice (SIECUS, 2001).
It is the age of the Pill, yet over a million teenagers will get pregnant. About 600,000 of these young women will give birth. In the 1950s, contraception was illegal in many states even for adults who were married. By the mid-1960s, contraceptive services also known as birth control were made available. By the 20th Century, teen pregnancy was the norm. The prevention of unintended adolescent pregnancy has become an important goal of our society. Although adolescent pregnancy and birth rates have been steadily decreasing, many adolescents still become pregnant. The purpose of this research paper is to review the history, current status, programs and the future of teen pregnancy.
The United States has been recognized as the country with the highest rate of teen pregnancy and abortions for many years. Although a baby is seen as a beautiful blessing, teenage pregnancy has many negative effects, such as lack of financial & emotional stability, delayed education, unemployment, poverty, and even worse increased risk for medical complications. Teenage pregnancy and abortions have been in decline over the years due to increased knowledge about sexual health, use of contraceptives, and abstinence.
Bringing a baby into the world is seen as a blessing, but it can also cause many problems when the parents are teenagers. Teen pregnancy can be very damaging to a person. It is also easily avoidable by schools and parents increasing the education level on forms of contraception that are available to people. By discussing the effects of teen pregnancy with peers and adults, adolescents can take greater precautions in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Although the trend of teenage girls bearing children is is lowering, the rate of teen pregnancies in the United States remains higher than the rate of teen pregnancy in other developed countries. This is a serious issue that
The purpose of this research paper is to provide different ways to prevent teen pregnancy. Teen pregnancy has become a very common thing with young girls nowadays. There are many ways to decrease the number of young girls getting pregnant. Evidence shows that a lot of time teens who get pregnant are usually poverty stricken or dealing with some type of struggle in life. With the help of parents, the community, and peers, there could be a significant decrease in teen pregnancy. Babies should not be having babies at all. After reading this paper, there are hopes that you can go out and prevent teen pregnancy along with others. Many people
Sex education is the key to eradicating unsafe sex practice as it enlightens people about sex and all other aspect of sexuality like relationship, sexual feelings, love and appropriate sexual behaviours in the society, Parents, school and the media are the most popular medium in teaching adolescents about sex education (Kekla, 2009).
There is a lot of controversy over teaching comprehensive sex education among people, some people believe that teaching comprehensive sex education causes rates of teen pregnancy and STI/HIV rates to go up. Just like we keep up with teaching the youth Math and Science we also need to keep them up to date on issues like Sex Education. This is important so the youth can be aware of these things like STIs and HIV when they are adults and know how to protect themselves, and possibly others .“There is no evidence that teaching kids to use condoms causes a spike in sexual activity”(D). In past surveys ninety percent of Americans over the age of eighteen felt sex education was very important to include in public school curriculum.Comprehensive Sex education has been proven statistically to be better than teaching abstinence only education. The population council declared that Abstinence only programs are ineffective at preventing teen pregnancy and STI’s.
In today’s society teenage pregnancy is happening more often. Sometimes when young teens don’t use the right protection they might
(RAINN) An abstinence only sex education curriculum teaches students to completely refrain from engaging in all sexual activity until marriage. An abstinence only approach dismisses the fact that teenagers will become sexually active at one time or another. Using this approach prevents students from gaining the knowledge that they would receive in a comprehensive sex education course. Comprehensive sex education promotes safety, it teaches teenagers and young adults how to be responsible when it comes to having sex.
According to Rhiannon Lucy, “Sex education is a process that begins at birth and continues until the day you die. It is a process of building a strong foundation for sexual health”. There are many misconceptions and non-factual opinions that accompany along the topic of sexual education, even though it may constantly discussed. Sex may includes sexual development, reproduction, intimacy, gender roles and relationships. At home parents may be nervous when discussing this particular topic, in order to reduce the mental thought of their child eventually becoming sexually active. Therefore, comprehensive sex education should be taught in many or all schools around the world. The youth of today would not be able to make educated
Schools play a major role in a child’s life. Students generally spend more time in school with their teachers and peers than they do at home. They learn about Math, Science, English, Social studies and much more. One of the major things that needs more emphasis is sex education. Society is changing boys and girls are starting puberty earlier than when schools provide them with information about it. “52% of teens have has sexual intercourse out of that 52% 42% say they did not use a condom during the last instance”(Sex Education in Texas Public Schools). With all the information on the Internet students should be informed on what is correct and what is not. The way we can do that is be placing students in sex education classes. Sex education is a necessary component in a child’s life; with society changing it needs to be offered at a younger age. There are many reasons for this it can help prevent unwanted teen pregnancies, educate youth on sexually transmitted diseases and teach them how to be safe. One of the issues people have with sex education in schools is the belief that it corrupts the youths mind.
