A poem is a piece of writing that arouses strong emotions because of its beauty. Poems can be expressed in both a speech and a song. The famous pop/country artist, Taylor Swift, expresses her poems in the form of songs. Her poems are written in a modern literature. She contributes to this literature because she writes her songs based on what is going on in the modern world and in her life. This is especially noticeable in her song, “Shake it off.” In this song she describes how people spread rumors and that you need to just let them go. In the song, “Shake it off,” There is a regular rhythm and meter. The rhythm and meter enhance the poem because it makes a beat in the reader’s head, which helps to construct the poem itself. This is presented throughout the whole poem, but is most prominent in the third stanza. For example, “But I keep cruising/ Can’t stop, won’t stop moving” (Swift 2014). This example shows the rhyme and rhythm that is presented in the poem. The entire poem has set rhythm that it follows which further helps the reader to read and comprehend the poem. This helps to enhance the poem because it acts as if it is the heart beat of poem, making everything flow together and providing imagery to the reader. The sound in this poem uses rhyme, to help the reader to more easily memorize the lyrics to the song. Swift tries to repeat words and phrases multiple times to help to let the readers memorize the song. This is found throughout the whole poem but is found mostly in the last stanza. In the last stanza she repeats a phrase multiple times. For example, “…Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake/ I shake it off, I shake it off/ Shake it off, I shake it off” (Swift 2014). This repeated phrase helps the reader to memorize the poem, as well as picture what the poem is saying, and make it fun to read.
