An item is never just an item, an idea is never just an idea. There is always is deeper meaning behind an object's physical form. Throughout The Book Thief, Zusak uses elements of symbolism to create a novel layered with hidden values. Possessions in the book soon become representations of the memories and emotions the characters live with. This is why the theme of The Book Thief is simple objects can have complex meanings.
In addition to how Marshall uses illustration to convey complexity and abstractness, foreshadow, and cause the reader to shift their focus he also has a very distinct style about his work. The style and design of his illustrations are consistent across his works and allow for more to be gained about the story.
The tree in Speak symbolizes Melinda’s emotional state when at first she finds no meaning in drawing the tree then she finds the courage to speak up about her rape experience. What would the story of a book be like if many important parts were just removed? What if many symbolic items were just taken out? Symbolism is when items hold a deeper meaning within a story . The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a great example of symbolism within a book. Through symbols such as the accordion, the Nazi Flag, and books, Zusak demonstrates how ordinary objects can represent a deeper meaning to readers and the characters within the story of The Book Thief.
The book Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, is filled with symbolism. One of the most evident examples of symbolism is the tree. The tree starts out as an art project, but throughout the book it becomes so much more. The tree held a lot of purpose in these three spots: when Ivy helps her in the mall, when Melinda’s father has the arborist come, and Melinda’s final art project.
Books can sate, motivate, and inspire a reader without standing the test of time. There are a multitude of books released today that can change a reader’s life without making their mark on history. Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief is a prime example of this. Most critics agree that The Book Thief is a quality read, but there is no telling whether it will last throughout the ages of literature. Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is a novel that has lasted since its release in the nineteenth century, and critics continue to praise it. Jane Eyre shares similarities to The Book Thief; however, The Book Thief will not stand the test of time because of its lack of completely original themes and ideas.
Percy D’Aco claimed, “The word suspense is related to the word suspended. When a story keeps us in suspense, we feel almost as if we are suspended in midair.” Suspense is often used in horror films. Suspense allows we as viewers to feel connected and apart of the work, whether that is a book or a movie. W.F Harvey creates suspense by foreshadowing, using reversal, and by withholding information.

It could be interpreted as a sign of what is yet to come exactly as Jacob Marley’s face on Ebenezer Scrooge’s doorknob was in the novella. The wreath is first shown in the windy night before Kevin wakes up all alone, accompanied by creepy background music. Not knowing that his family already took off to the airport, Kevin thinks of it as being a miracle and that he made his family disappear. In this case the face in the wreath would be a precursor of something supernatural just as Jacob Marley’s face on the doorknob was by showing up directly before the
