While writing a memoir, the author does not always have to be truthful. As long as the author gets their point across, then that’s fine. Most authors, in every genre, have either some kind of information that they add in to try and make the book more appealing, or have information that they take out because it's either not worth telling, or it doesn’t add to the point of the story.

After contemplating the purpose of a memoir several things came to mind. I believe it can serve to be cathartic for the writer as they can be set free by working through certain events in their life. Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, I think a memoir can serve as a way to for the writer to tell their story in a vivid way that allows the readers to feel like they are living the experience and perhaps to learn a valuable lesson from their story. Therefore, I chose to analyze two memoirs they were Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie and “Salvation” by Langston Hughes. I concentrated on trying to determine the purpose of each piece in order to indicate what pivotal aspects were employed that either helped or hindered them in achieving that purpose.

In the article titled “The Problem with Memoirs” by Neil Genzlinger, the author begins with a clear and brief introduction about his view and definition of personal memoirs and why today this specific set of writing is problematic for the audience reading this style of writing. Some key points that he addresses in the article are the idea that not every personal should be written and publish a memoir. Many personal memoirs contain a variety of stories in which authors explain and emphasize their life experiences. Often times many write about a favorite childhood memory, surviving cancer or other personal situations. In order to earn her degree in creative writing she needed to complete a novel or set of short stories. She intended to write her memoir but ran into some issues. The emotions about what had happened were still too raw and reliving her memories was too much for her to handle at that time. Instead, she wrote an autobiographical novel. The events that happened in the book all happened to her, but the presence of a fictional character to represent her helped create tolerable distance between her and her experiences. This novel prepared her to write her memoir. Writing her memoir allowed her confront her past in a new way. It required her to revisit her memories as a writer rather than as herself with all her entangled emotions. Examining her life through a different lens allowed her to heal.

In “How to Write a Memoir” William Zinsser gives very detailed and important advice to writers interested in writing a memoir. He gives the specific advice of “Be yourself,” “Speak Freely,” and “Think Small” (Zinsser, 2, 4, 6). These tips advise writers to not only think about what they want to say in their story but also how they want to tell their story. Many memoir authors choose to follow this advice and write their story using these points, but many do not. In the memoir “A Summer Life”, Gary Soto follows Zinsser’s writing advice through his use of writing from the point of view of a young child, speaking freely about his early life events, and writing about his life in small structure chapters.

As we continue with “The Other Wes Moore,” fate has taken a turn for the worse. Wes has followed his older brother foot's steps in becoming a drug dealer while the other Wes is falling behind in school. Tony has influenced Wes in becoming a drug dealer unintentionally because Wes idolized Tony and wanted to be just like his big brother despite following in his wrong footsteps. Younger siblings will always look up at their older siblings because the older siblings have always protected and cared for them. Older sibling will become a parent figure to the younger sibling by offering them advice and guiding them into the right path. Tony being the older brother wanted a better life for his little brother because he knew the consequences of being a drug dealer. Drug dealers are more likely to become addicts, sentence to jail or be killed. Tony wanted his brother Wes to stay out of this lifestyle, but

I chose to do my analysis on the short story, “The Story Of An Hour”. The themes I see in this story is the quest for identity/coming of age, romantic/love, birth, and death. It is about a woman named Mrs. Mallard. She was an elderly lady and had a heart complications. Her sister Josephine and her husband’s friend Richards had to break the news to her that her husband, Brently Mallard, has been killed in a railroad disaster. Mrs. Mallard was sorrowful and sobbed in her sisters’ arms. After her grieving process, she wanted to be alone, so she went to her room and locked herself in. As she sat in the window, she seem to be calmer and accepted her husband’s death. She was not distressed of what had happened. She began to say the words “free” and her heart

For this assignment we were asked to write a memoir about a significant event in our life. We were graded on our ability to create an engaging opening, write a powerful storyline with a complex self-awareness, and create a piece with a clear beginning, middle, and end. It was expected that we followed MLA format and at least two pages long. For my memoir I wrote about a time I injured myself. I think the main purpose of the assignment was to get us to think about how events in our life impacted who we are today. It was also meant to encourage us to analyze how we reacted to a certain situation and why we reacted in the way we did. Sometimes they might have a small detail that's true, but it's either not worth telling, or it doesn’t add to the point of the story.

Point of view-The story starts of in third person about a group of soldiers and their Lieutenant. As the story continues the story switches to first person and it begins talking about love. Threw out the story we can see that it is told in first person and the author was part of it.

Eaton argues, in depth, how the memoir is not very effective in inspiring readers since they, according to Eaton, cannot take the memoir seriously. In order to convey his point of view, he uses many methods to do so, such as providing truthful facts, using quotes as evidence, and choosing a particular writing style for his review.

An autobiography is a story of your own life. Even if you think you don’t have much to include in your memoir, you can still make it quite interesting.
