Every writer has their own approach to the writing process. Some people may be extremely good at writing while others struggle. I know I was always one of those people who struggle with writing. In high school, I would always have to get help from a tutor or one of my teachers. It was always hard for me to stay focused enough to know what I needed to write about and what order everything needed to be in. it wasn’t until my senior year of high school when I finally had an English teacher who actually tried to help me with my writings. My teacher would work with me just a couple extra minutes before and after class making sure I knew what I would have to fix before I turn in my paper. He tried to help me with grammar and punctuation, but I …show more content…
I did horrible on all of them. The last quiz I did the best on because I had just started to get a hang of what was going on. One of my strengths before entering the class was I have a very creative imagination. I could free write and make u stories for hours on end. Most of the people who read my stories enjoy them. The reason I am creative is due to the fact that when I was younger I would read non-stop for hours. I loved to imagine myself in all the different settings of any book I had on hand. For me, reading was a way to escape the real world and all the negativity in my life. Besides creativity though I really had no other strengths when it came to writing.
For every paper I wrote for English 101 I had a different approach. The first paper for the class was a narrative essay. I started the paper at the rough draft step and halfway through I realized it was not the topic I had wanted to write about. After starting over and starting at the prewriting step everything seemed to work out a lot easier. I was able to outline how I wanted my paper and everything turned out fine. For the revising and editing of any paper, I write I always ask a friend or one of my teachers from high school. The second paper for the class was a descriptive essay. Out of the four paper, we had to write for the class the descriptive essay was the easiest for me. With the descriptive paper, I followed the stages of
It is essential to understand that classes taken in grade school do not give students a full understanding of each subject. With the topic of writing, there will always be a new lesson to learn, an aspect to improve, or a differing way to explain. Author Craig Vetter states in Bonehead Writing, “This is your enemy: a perfectly empty sheet of paper. Nothing will ever happen here except what you make happen.” Each story, essay, or response comes from a writer’s experiences. With each attempt at a new piece comes an underlying story of emotions the writer is facing. Each person’s writing is unique and the ideas people have are related to their past experiences and what they believe to be familiar with when deciding which writing style to use. As a high school student, I have learned many things about writing that helped me become the improved writer I am today, but the most essential advice I have received is practice makes perfect. Although there is no actual perfect way of writing, I have discovered that each essay I write, my writing improves. It is easier to spot mistakes, find areas to improve, and ponder elevated word choice to use.
How can I become a better writer? Throughout my writing experiences, I have learned I have many weaknesses along with strengths. My experiences with writing has not always been the best, but over time, with lots of practice and instructions from my instructors, I can proudly say that I have gained a better understanding on the layout of essays and papers. As well as understanding how to write correctly my goal as a writer is to learn how to overcome my weaknesses and use my strengths to my highest ability. I have many strengths, weaknesses and goals that I plan to achieve and overcome in my college career.
Writing is always a struggle. You have to analyze texts, search for sources, write multiple rough drafts, check for spelling and grammar issues, cite your sources, and support your statements with facts. The list goes even longer, but this is just enough to make anybody stressed. Everyone can relate to the struggles of writing, and personally, I have fallen victim to many of these struggles. However, even though writing is very difficult, you can gain experience on how to write successfully.
Writing is not something that always comes naturally. The art of writing requires patience and continual practice. As a Bethel University student, I have many resources available to me to assist me with my practice. One example is Paperrater.com. This is a free resource with a fast and easy way to get an immediate review of your writing. The website offers basic instructions on how to revise papers based off style, word choice, spelling, and grammar rules.
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
I have four strengths and three weakness coming into this writing course. One of my strengths is expressing my creativity, by using my kinesthetic learning skills. For example, I exercise to help stimulate my brain to come up with ideas. Next, I am very organized. I use a story outline to organize my introduction, three body paragraph, and conclusion. Also, my writing style keeps my readers hooked. At the beginning of my introduction, I make dramatic statements using humor and controversy. Finally, I have an excellent build of vocabulary. I know how to pick the most appropriate word, to make my sentence sound great.
Considering my essay and rubric there are some strengths and weaknesses. In my essay, i felt like the setting of my story was good as well as the body of the essay. What i mean by this is by my choice of words, variety of verbs, format, and how easy it is to read. The overall quality of my writing in my opinion was the best part. I feel like the details I used really gave my paper character. Details such as how I used to write on a lot of the things I owned, how in the sixth and seventh grade I wrote an 18 page paper on a Cinderella story, and how I loved to write. Where I struggled with writing this essay would be consistency with point of view and and the five senses. A peer of mine noticed I had accidentally used the word “you” a few
On November 21, 2017 I made the biggest mistake in my academic career. I turned in a crap essay to a college level class. I received a “B” and that is the lowest I have ever scored on an essay. This experience has taught me a lot though, it showed me my strengths and weaknesses when writing. I have learned that my writing is best when I am motivated because I am intrigued by the topic I am writing about. On the other hand my writing is the worst when it is rushed, like my “Transcendentalism and American Romanticism”essay. My writing also takes a hit because I have a hard time changing my writing based on others suggestions and my ignorance to commas.
Learning about myself as a reader and writer has helped me become a better student, learn effective strategies for reading and writing, and ponder my future goals.
Writing is a skill that takes time to develop. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is very important. Being aware of your strengths can help you stand out, and your weaknesses show you areas where improvement is needed. Like everybody I have weaknesses as well as strengths, and being conscious of them helped me improve my writing skills.
Writing has never been my strongest talent. I can enjoy writing a paper or story, but that is usually when it is not assigned to me. I have always felt that my assigned papers read like they are forced. I think I am a poor writer and my skills are very unfinished.
Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures. While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned very much in others. My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional individual attention. Throughout the class I experienced high points, weaknesses, and even difficulties that I never overcame. Overall, my writing skills improved, but only marginally.
Writing has always been something I dread. It’s weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It’s almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It’s not that I think I’m a “bad writer,” I just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don’t think highly of my writing skills. When I was little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it’s
The class that you have been taken since you were in elementary school, the class the seemed like it would be the easiest to take in high school was English. There is something I did not come to the realization that there would be three and more pages that would be crucially graded and worth all most all your grade. Since the beginning of the junior year I believed that in certain areas of writing, there were places that I could possess weaknesses in. Writing is a process that takes a lot of work and time for me to do, you have to know how to analyze the text you're reading, making a deep connection with the prompt presented and just writing. Those are the three main categories that I have been graded on since the beginning of junior year, making deep connection and understanding to the prompt which is where I had the most struggle in and writing which is where I believe my strength is in.
Writing is not just as simple as putting words down on a document or a piece of paper, it is a process. Within this intricate process are steps that involve more than just writing, such as critical thinking, planning, and editing. Using these steps has not only helped me when planning an essay but also when composing one. Throughout this course, I have managed to improve many skills and gain a lot of strengths, but I still possess some weaknesses. Overall, I believe my strengths have definitely outgrown these weaknesses and have led to a better, more high-quality writing process which leads to improved essays.
