The First Crusade took place from 1096 to 1099. When the Byzantine army was defeated by the Seljuk Turks at the battle of Manzikirt, this created an outburst of chaos and civil war within themselves. When Alexius Comnemus took the throne, she decided to send Pope Urban II a letter asking for help. Pope Urban made a speech declaring the call for a Crusade to fight against the Seljuk Turks. Urban asked Christians to join forces to work to free the Holy Land from Muslim invaders. Pope Urban II convinced his people to join in this journey by reassuring them that all their sins would be forgiven and that they would have a guaranteed spot in heaven. The leaders of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, chose Catholicism as the religion of the entire country with the intention of bringing the country together as a strong nation. The Spanish Inquisition was officially started to unify the people of Spain. It began as cruel torturing and persecuting of people because of their devotion to a religion other than Catholicism. This Inquisition was used for religious and political reasons. During this Inquisition, any accused misbelievers were given a chance to confess their disloyalty and to rat out other misbelievers. If they confessed, they were released, but if they did not confess, they were either killed and tortured or sentenced to life in prison. If people were found guilty during their trials, they were burned at the stake. Suspects would be tortured for weeks, and it was intended to be excruciatingly painful. One form of torture included lying face down on the floor with a board on your back, then heavy weights would be dropped onto the board and would crush anything beneath it. More than 323,300 people were killed during the Spanish Inquisition. The Inquisition ended when Napoleon took power and abolished it; it had failed to bring about social unity. People became more liberal and stopped this
The Spanish Inquisition lasted from 1478 to 1834. The goal of the Spanish Inquisition was to expel, convert or kill all Non-Catholics from Spain in Spain. When people were accused heresy they would be pit on trial, but before they could be on trial they had to sit in jail which most of them were unsanitary and people were given little food to eat. The punishments people received if they were found guilty were: torture, public humiliation, and death. The trials were unfair, unjustified and not necessary. The Spanish Inquisition did not help spread Catholicism and in fact slowed the spread because of the fear that it instilled in Non-Catholics.
However, the effect of religion was seen in the Inquisition. The Inquisition officers were university specialists in law and Theology (Catholic Culture). This does point at the stance that perhaps the Inquisition was not entirely corrupt at the time. As the king’s power rose through the effects of closing out the Church the more corrupt it became. The king saw the Inquisition as “ensuring religious health of their kingdoms ” (Catholic Culture). At this point secular rulers began taking over the Inquisition (Catholic Culture). In 1482, Pope Sixtus ordered for people to have trials (Catholic Culture). King Ferdinand accused the Pope of bribery and that was the “end of [the] papacy role in the Inquisition” (Catholic Culture).
According to Dana C. Munro, the first crusades began under the papacy of Pope Urban II. From whom delivered a speech in 1096 at the Council of Clermont that led thousands to take up the cross. It is from that moment on the Popes always felt the crusades were their task and under their inspiration believing that the crusades were God’s work and they were His agents. Let us consider the words of Pope Urban II according to Fulk of Chartres, “I speak to those who are present, I shall proclaim it to the absent, but it is Christ who commands. Moreover, if those who set to thither lose their lives on the journey, by land or sea, or in fighting against the heathen, their sins shall be remitted in that hour; this I grant through the power of God vested in me. ”
November 27, 1095 Pope Urban ll called the people of France to help him begin a crusade to free the Holy Land from the Muslims who had the audacity to control it. First Crusade was one of the first attempts to capture the Holy Land which was successful. The First Crusade was a military expedition undertaken by Christian the Holy Land from the Muslims. But the main question is how and why were the Christian Crusaders motivated to fight in the war, was is it to do with political reason such gaining money, power, papacy.
The First Crusades was a military group that was started by Christians in Europe who wanted to gain back the Holy Land that was being occupied by the Muslims. Pope Urban II preached a sermon at Clermont Ferrand on November 1095. Most histories consider this speech to be the spark the fueled a wave of military campaigns to gain back the Holy Land. This speech was meant to unite the Europeans and to gain back what was taken from them. The holy land was a small area on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The First Crusades was a very successful military expedition that was driven by religious faith to reclaim Jerusalem and other holy places that fell under Muslim control. driven by religious faith. They wanted to gain back the Holy Land that was once theirs. Arabs and the Muslim Turks otherwise known as the Seljuk Turks were the Muslims that invaded and conquered land rightfully occupied by the Christian’s. Many European men, women, and children joined the Crusades and fought in the Middle East. Pope Urban II granted forgiveness of all sins to those who died in battle thus assuring them ascendancy into heaven. Which gave those who volunteered to fight assurance. Nobles and peasants responded in great numbers to the call and marched across Europe to the capital of the Byzantine empire. Having the support of the Byzantine emperor helped make them a stronger army. The Crusaders took over many of the cities on the Mediterranean coast and built a large number of fortified castles across the Holy Land to protect their newly established territories. Soon after seizing power the Seljuks face a very different challenge to Islamic civilization. It came from Christian Crusaders. Knights from western Europe who were determined to capture portions of the Islamic world that made up the holy land of biblical times. Muslim political division and element of surprise made the first of the Crusaders assaults, between 1096 and 1099, by far the most successful. Much of
In 1478 an independent Spanish Inquisition was created by pope Sixtus in response to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Castile. The Spanish Inquisition had independence from Papal control and was created to consolidate authority and secure religion in a unified government organization in New Spain. By 1570 there were Holy Offices in Mexico and Lima and by 1579 an office was built in Brazil as well. The Inquisition of New Spain lasted from 1569-1821 consisting of hierarchical official and processes. Ludovicus de paramo, De Origine et Progressu Officii Sanctae Inquisitionis, in 1598 states “God was the first inquisitor”.
The crusades were wars fought in the name of God or holy wars. The first of the crusades began in 1095 when Pope Urban the second received an appeal for help from Alexius the first, the Byzantine Emperor. Alexius wanted Urbans' help against the Turks, "a race alienated from God".
The First Crusade was cause by conflicts between the Christians and the Muslims for the Holy Land, Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the holy city for all three groups of different faiths; the Christians, the Jews, and the Muslims. For the Christians, Jerusalem was where Jesus was crucified and resurrected. For the Muslim, Jerusalem was the place where Muhammad had ascended to heaven. For the Jews, it was their God 's city and it was the sit of Solomon 's temple. The main idea of the First Crusade was good against evil, in which the crusaders were on the good side and the Muslims and Jews on the evil side; after all they were the one who killed Jesus. The two main leaders that called for the First Crusade were Alexius I, emperor of the Byzantine
The inquisition was used for both religious and political reasons in Spain. Ferdinand and Isabella asked permission from Pope Lucius III to purify Spain of all other religions other than Catholicism. They began by driving out Jews, Protestants and other non-believers.
The first crusade started in autumn of 1095. Pope Urban II initiated the first crusade by calling upon his Christians to reclaim the city of Jerusalem. The Crusade was also meant to seek revenge on the followers of Islam. The followers were accused of committing crimes against “Christendom”. Pope Urbans crusade was made possible by the work of St. Augustine on Christian Violence in the past. Many Christians joined the crusade because the Pope promised rewards for the afterlife. After the fourth century, Christianity underwent a transformation when it fused with the Roman state for which warfare was essential. St. Augustine and Pope Urban enabled violence to be an option for Christians and it can be described in this quote, “For the first time in Christian history, violence was defined as a religious act, a source of grace.” After the Pope’s Christian tour, many Christians were ready to destroy everything that stood in their way.
“Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” Exodus 22:18 (Holy Bible King James Version). Throughout history, thousands of people have been executed because of accusations of being a witch. The years between 1450 and 1750 are noted for witch hunts. During this time period was the famous Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish Inquisition began in 1478 and lasted until 1834 (Enforex). The Inquisition is famous for the fact that they tortured people to death or until they admitted that they were a heretic. If one was accused of being a heretic during the Inquisition, they would be asked if they were a heretic. If they said no, it admitted their guilt and they would be tortured until they confessed. In 1478 the official Spanish Inquisition began, via the decree of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, with the support of the pope. The reasons why it began was because there were a great number of other cultures in Spain. Due to that many political and religious leaders thought that other religions and cultures would stop Spain from becoming unified. So they began their quest to rid Spain of religious and cultural diversity. The Spanish Inquisition’s first target, was to kill heretics. It came first because heresy was thought to be an illness and because many spaniards thought it was the Christian duty to convert all non Catholics.
When most people think of the Inquisition, they think of people being burned at the stake. But in reality it was more complicated than that. The word inquisition means a period of prolonged investigation and questioning. But when most people hear the word inquisition, they think of the church. The Inquisition was a group of institutions within the Roman Catholic Church with the goal to combat heresy. The Inquisition was not just one thing. There were many Inquisitions over the course of many years. The first Inquisition started in the 1100s and the last ones ended in the 1800s. Each one of these inquisitions had different effects on different groups of people.
The Jews were never allowed to become ordinary subjects. They were under protection of the crown, lived in their own city quarters and paid taxes directly to the crown.1 I think the results of the riots in 1391 was a precursor to the Spanish Inquisition. The riots were not solely founded on exasperation of the economy led by clergy, but a desire for religious hegemony. Conversos were the result of this desire for hegemony, forced to convert and then given no religious instruction, perhaps Spain realized that they had failed to create any kind of religious dominance, but had only allowed new heretics to call themselves Christians. The inquisition was a response to that reality. Religion and politics in the Medieval World are hard to separate,
The Spanish Inquisition is known for the pain it caused the citizens of the Iberian Peninsula. Whereas, the inquisition started to clarify the land from heretics, it came to have more greedy, and political motives. The start of the inquisition is usually accepted to the reign of Ferdinand V. and Isabella. The Spanish inquisition started in the year of 1478 and lasted until the year of 1834 when Ferdinand and Isabella passed away.
