Sira Ndiokho – Brown Personal Statement: My primary objective as an adjunct instructor is to share my love for technology and the study of this fascinating discipline with students, friends, and colleagues. Since I marked the beginning of my teaching experience about four years ago; I have continued to integrate innovative teaching techniques, group activities, and active learning into my course. In today’s globally competitive environment, I believe that textbook materials are not enough to fully prepare and impart knowledge on students in any given course. For instance, one lesson I have learned from teaching is that students do not always understand lectures or course contents fully—even though they give the instructors the feedback that …show more content…
I believe that in addition to keeping up with academic materials, students should also make time to read materials related to their professional field or the fields they plan to work in once they graduate. For example, for information technology (IT) students, I encourage students to pickup and read IT related articles on printed trade journals, online trade journals, and newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and several others. This helps students keep abreast of the happenings in the industry outside of the academic environment. I enjoy teaching, training, and imparting my knowledge to help others succeed whether in an academic environment or a corporate setting. I usually feel very satisfied and fulfilled when I see my students learn and speak of acquiring knowledge that leads them to the next step in their academic pursuit or to higher positions professionally. However, nothing frustrates me more than knowing that a student left my class completely empty. This makes me feel like I have wasted both my time and the student’s valuable time. For me, teaching does not only enrich my students; rather, it is a knowledge growth journey for everyone—the student, teacher, and
In every position, my greatest source of joy and motivation comes from being able to effectively support my students. Watching them learn something new, overcome challenges, or reach their goals always brings me the greatest sense of fulfillment. I have supported students in a variety of capacities such as answering homework questions, helping a student cope with the loss of multiple classmates, and others with their feelings of being unsafe in America. These moments, when my students trusted me with their struggles, are among my proudest accomplishments. With my future
For a long time I didn’t know what I would like to pursue as a career but when I reflected on my life I realized some of my favorite times in life were when I was teaching someone something and when I was learning. In my future career as a high school teacher I will able to do both of those things. Seeing peoples’ eyes light up with interest because they
Teachers have a pivotal impact on students’ desires to stay in school and motivation to succeed. As a student myself and the act of studying to become an educator, I realize how crucial it is for students to know that a teacher cares about his or her academic success and him or her in general. I was shy growing up which in turn led to a lack of confidence in myself and my abilities, and my teachers provided me with the skills I need to succeed, Seeing that tie in and how my teachers have shaped into who I am today led me to see that impact on a personal level and how a teacher can truly change a person’s life.
Students are often told that the path to success tends to be a lonely one because only they can get themselves there. For the most part that is true, they must be self-motivated and passionate about their future, but along the way they get to meet special people that want to see them to accomplish their goals. From an early age the relationship built between students and teachers has molded and impacted the student’s life. The relationship they have with a teacher can define the attitude that student has with the subject being taught. A lot of emphasis is put on students when they fail a course and they question their effort. Although, the root of the problem is not always the student, but the method the instructor is using to teach the student.
My observations show me that I like to teach people things and learn how to do things that are new to me and I am creative. I base this observation on my enjoyment of watching my three and five granddaughter and going to a office of a friend and help her staff learn new ways of running the office. This is how I know that I enjoy teaching people thing. The children give me more enjoyment that most other activities I do. They are like little sponges who absorb everything that is done and said around them. I enjoy cooking with them everyday. We cook lunch and bake something almost everyday. They help with dinner and are learning new things everyday when it comes to cooking. With them standing on the step stool beside me they learning
I have equally high expectations for all of the students in my charge. If a teaching strategy fails to work for a student in my room, I will find an alternative method. After all, I want each student to succeed, no matter what kind of effort I must put forth” (Brennan).
I learned that some students learn better by being able to move around and some students like to sit quietly. I learned to present ideas through both auditory and visual means. Offering manipulatives or other hands-on support for students who need them. As a future educator, I thoroughly understand the differences of all learners. So now I can provide a better chance of meeting the diverse learning needs of all my future students.
This shows that textbook is never enough. Daniels & Zemelmen point out that textbooks offer superficiality (52) if not used properly and creatively. Hence, by incorporating steps in inquiry project like immersing ( building background knowledge), investigating ( doing research), coalescing ( intensifying and synthesizing information), and going public (sharing) (Daniels & Zemelmen, 264), students will go deeper in their learning than merely
I am someone who is passionate about learning and education. I enjoy the challenge, interaction and success of the learning experience. My career has allowed me to combine my passion for education and sharing those learning with the people I work with. I often find opportunities to help my colleagues and customers learn new skills or information to enhance their overall job success.
I've always been an academic-based person, meaning that I spent most of my time in chemistry helping other students learn. The feeling I get when I've successfully helped another student is the greatest thing. Something I've always enjoyed is learning. When a teacher is passionate about what they're teaching, I easily become passionate too and I hope all of my future professors love their subjects. Knowledge is something I'm always striving for and I doubt I'll ever reach
I am a 9th grade teacher at Callaway High School located in Jackson, Mississippi. I enjoy teaching young people because I find it fulfilling to help them realize their unlimited potential. The look upon a Childs face when they have conquered a lesson or a test is priceless. I plan to use my
My teaching career has been spent learning how to provide appropriate support, guidance, patience, & understanding, as well as to enhance academic growth & success, for all students. My purpose as a teacher is to enrich and inspire the lives of young students with moderate/intensive needs by providing access to information instead of functioning as the primary source of information for students to flourish. My teaching methods will be to create an environment ripe with opportunities for discovery and exploration which will allow all students to learn at their own pace, generate questions and construct knowledge, while providing hands-on practice of skills in authentic situations as well
Although the integration of academic and vocational education offers one strategy for developing the academic and technical competence of students, it does not constitute tech prep. Tech prep requires not only new courses and a sequenced core curriculum, but courses that take into account the learning styles of the majority of students, incorporating concepts like that of contextual learning. According to Hull (1993), contextual learning "occurs only when students process new information or knowledge in such a way that it makes sense to them in their frame of reference (their own inner world of memory, experience, and response)" (p. 41). Thus, the applied academics approach to learning, which involves the teaching of solid academic content by means of hands-on and vocational applications, follows the contextual learning concept in that it provides for learning in the context of life experiences-building on what the students already know and applying learning in the context of how the knowledge/information can be used in the context of exploration, discovery, and invention (ibid.). One of the goals of applied academic curriculum is that it should enable students to transfer knowledge from academic content to vocational applications and from school to the workplace.
inadequecy of textbooks (content) result from every individual class’ own learning needs. Therefore, it is possible to argue that the aims of participants ( those who scored disagree or not sure) did not effectively correspond to the textbook aims in terms of skills. They may rely heavily on one or more skills while neglecting the others. Thus, their expectations would not naturally be reflected in textbooks. The literature also indicates the evidence that different teaching approaches and styles of every individual teacher reveal how teachers implement teaching materials
The most significant reason I enjoy teaching is to see the difference I can make in students lives, no matter how immense or minor the change is. I love witnessing students get excited about learning, and just how much they can grow and develop over a period of time. The dramatic shift and knowing I had helped her achieve this, was one of the best feelings, and my favourite aspect of teaching.
