What is rhetoric? Rhetoric is “the art or skill of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people" (“Rhetoric”). The three rhetorical strategies are: ethos- appeal to credibility, logos- appeal to logic, and pathos, appeal to emotion. This can be seen throughout the film, but is most effective when Mike is given a ride from the stranger that was playing basketball with him. The appeal to emotion starts when the narrator says “Mike was riding in the shadow of death” (“Boys Beware”). This completely changes the scene from mike and the stranger playing a fun game of basketball to Mike dying because he got into the car. This quote appeals to both teenagers and parents, as teens don’t want to die, and parents don’t want their children to die either. Additionally , the man that starts to play basketball with Mike was very nice and well dressed, but in a drastic change of events, turns around and later kills Mike. This is another great example of the rhetorical strategy of pathos as teenagers don’t know who they can trust anymore. Finally, the narrator ends the scene “Sometime that evening Mike Merrock traded his life for a newspaper headline” (“Boys Beware”). This appeal to emotion hits home to parents especially. Not only did their son die, but everyone who reads the newspaper will know that their child died and could therefor assume it was the fault of the parent not caring for their child. As a whole, pathos is used effectively to display to the audience that child predators are

MLK’s form of rhetorical demands for justice for the indifference to the black community is a touchstone for all to express and relate to the American racial tragedies of their time. Focusing on some of the specific examples (facts) to “ground” MLK’s arguments, to help enforce the use of Metaphors to emphasize contrasting concepts, while following the theme of repetition throughout, “I have a dream.” Within the speech, through audio recordings, the solid firm voice that the preacher to the masses utilizes is a significant acceptance to the lifestyle and constant training that MLK faced throughout his entire life.

Rhetoric is a form of language that expresses persuasion. Rhetoric is not only used in educational settings, but also in other forms in a person’s day-to-day life. For example, when people get on their social media, video advertisements of certain products pop up to persuade the person to buy their product, radio stations persuade people to call and win tickets for a concert, and TV commercials persuade people to go buy a new car. This form of persuasive language is normal because it is seen and heard everywhere. It just depends on the creator to see if it actually works and gets the audience to actually be persuaded.
