Rebuttal: End of Men

In the article “Women’s Human Rights and Gender Equality’’ i read about how Women’s rights are the fundamental human rights that were enshrined by the United Nations for every human being on the planet nearly 70 years ago. These rights include to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated ; to vote and to earn a fair and equal wage. A famous saying goes “Women’s rights are human rights” meaning, women all around the world are entitled to all of these rights, but yet there are women and girls who are still denied these rights, often simply because of their gender. Winning these rights for women isn’t all, it’s also about changing how countries and communities works and their perspectives on gender equality. Global Fund for Women exists to support the tireless and courageous efforts of women’s groups who work every day to win rights for women and girls. These groups are working to ensure women can own property, vote, run for office, get paid fair wages, and live free from violence – including domestic violence, sexual assault. Women rights movement’s dates back to the nineteenth century as the female gender was seeking to have a place in the society where they have their rights and entitlement fairly given to them. It was instigated by the fact that the male population by making them feel as less beings in the society. This is because they were not entitled to having their views brought out. However, in the 1970’s efforts to secure equal rights for women by eradicating gender discrimination put by institution, laws and various behavioural pattern meet serious activism (Barrett. 2014). The reforms enjoyed currently concerning women empowerment is as a result of all the atrocities that they went through at this time. It is, therefore, evident to say that the challenges faced by women in the 1970’s rights movement gave birth to new opportunities such as coming up with severe laws on gender discrimination, pushed for the Title IX law and defining rape as a crime.

Ann Levine and Naomi Neft's article "Women in Today's World" asserts that although the status of females in developed countries has vastly improved with society's movement toward a more gender-equal condition, the majority of women remain in a dire state of oppression. Women are more impoverished, illiterate, unemployed, and more destitute than men. In spite of some women's improvements under developed countries' more progressive, gender-equal regimes, education, literacy rates, employment, civil rights, health, and public representation remain substandard for most of the world's females.

Throughout the many years, the fight for gender equality along with women’s rights has been a long lasting battle. Thousands of women have went out of their way to fight for what they believe they deserve. The major organization that has made a remarkable impact on women today is what they refer to as “NOW,” The National Organization for Women.

There exists many international NGOs that perform exceptional and critical work on behalf of human rights issues. Many like Amnesty International and Oxfam provide much needed support and assistance to individuals and groups internationally. One such internationally recognized NGO is the International Alliance for Women. It was founded in 1904 and its mission is to "promote women's human rights around the world, focusing particularly on empowerment of women and development issues and more broadly on gender equality" (womenalliance.org). In my opinion at the core of this organization is the inalienable rights of women, that is "full and equal enjoyment of human rights is due to all women and girls". I agree with Rosin 's outlook to a certain point. When I look around my college campus, I can see the majority of students are female. I think that women are beginning to achieve a higher rank in the workforce and are gaining gender equality. I don 't think, however, that females are necessarily taking over the workforce. I believe men are supposed to be the ones caring and providing for their families. They should be the head of the household, the ones in charge of making important decisions that will benefit their family. But, of course, I can 't argue with the fact that women are becoming stronger leaders and are starting to take the place of men.

Throughout history women’s rights have been a conflict in society because of the many unfair advantages given to men and not women. Social injustice is shown through women’s rights by their voting rights, employment, and healthcare. Due to these dilemmas women all over the world have gathered together to create a group enforcing women’s rights. For example, in the book, The American Women’s Movement it talks about the group known as “The National Organization for Women (NOW)” (MacLean 71). It became one of the largest, most membered feminist organization in the country. The organization branched out to different sized region cities.

WomenOne is a non-profit committee, dedicated to making positive change within the lives women and girls globally, through access to quality education. They support verified, innovative, community-based, formal and non-formal instructional initiatives. By advocating for the power of one educated woman to remodel her life, thus she's going to inspire a community, and alter the planet. Without the opportunity of education, the future of the unfortunate girls would be circumcision, an arranged marriage, and a probable life of poverty. WomenOne is a new non-profit, created in 2011. However, even in short time they have already traveled a long way to identify the needs of women and girls all across the globe and giving them a voice. They work

This is not to undermine that women should be the subjects of aid, but to examine the ways fantasy aid actually leads to increasingly detrimental inter-gender relations. Many of these programs use the language of empowerment, but it is really empowerment lite, which does not benefit women. According to Grosser and van de Gaag " without a focus on boys as well as girls, programs may train girls, giving them skills and confidence, but this can in turn put them in danger of backlash from those around them who see their new self-esteem as a threat" (79). This is the same idea as fixing a girl by giving her a cow, what does training truly do to unravel systems of oppression and domination, if only half the population is trained? Grosser and van de Gaag's article further highlights that creating powerful changes in a society requires working with the powerful in order to insure their participation in the future (Grosser and van de Gaag 79). Just how ignoring women in the past hurt development programs, ignoring men will not help the new initiatives. The vital element in my opinion is to empower men but not masculinity, by dismantling the oppressive ways patriarchy has affected their interactions with themselves and society.      In the aftermath of World War II, the lives of the women have changed dramatically. Women spoke their minds out and wanted to be heard. World War II brought them a new outlook on how they should live their lives. It encouraged women organize social movements such as boycotts and public marches pushing for their human rights and protect them against discrimination. Currently, according to statistics from the Department of Labor of the United States; of the “123 million women age 16 years and over, 58.6 percent or 72 million were labor force participants and in the long run, women are projected to account for 51 percent of the increase in total labor force growth between 2008 and 2018” (U.S. Department of Labor). These numbers will clearly demonstrate to any skeptic that women are leaving behind their old dependence on men and becoming more autonomous and self-determined to succeed; it sounds great, doesn’t it? On the other hand; however, men are losing as women are gaining. The Department of Labor has reported that men have lost about 4.75 million jobs during the current economic recession that started in 2007, while women have only lost 1.66 million. Additionally, “the only parts of the economy still growing—health care, education and government—have traditionally hired mostly women”( Cauchon). Now, as a result, of the statistics that show that females are overcoming males in the workplace; the gender segregation has created some kind of imaginary “glass ceiling” that impedes both sexes from advancing professionally and economically.

The International Alliance of Women (IAW) is an international non-governmental organization that works to promote women 's human rights around the world, focusing particularly on empowerment of women and development issues and more broadly on gender equality. The basic principle of the IAW is that the full and equal enjoyment of human rights is due to all women and girls. Founded in 1904 and based in Geneva, it is one of the oldest, largest and most influential organizations in its field. It’s comprised of forty-one member organizations involved in the advancement of the human rights of women and girls globally. The IAW has general consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and is credited to many specialized UN agencies, has participatory status with the Council of Europe and is represented at the Arab League, the African Union and other international organizations.
