Plagiarism is an ongoing problem from high school to college and beyond. If you ask ten high school students about plagiarism, one out of every three students will have admitted to using plagiarism off the internet for an assignment. (Donald McCabe, Rutgers university) A survey conducted by Donald McCabe at Rutger’s University showed that out of 24,000 students at 70 different high schools, fifty-eight percent admitted to plagiarism. In another study he conducted with college students the numbers had increased greatly. Over the course of three years out of 63,700 students thirty-six percent admitted to plagiarizing from the Internet. Seven percent of those students admitted to copying word for word from a written source.(Donald McCabe 2002-2005 plagiarism.org) This survey he conducted just shows how plagiarism gets worse as students progress with their education if not not taught early.

First let me explain what is plagiarisms. Well to make it simple it is when someone tries to pass off somebodies else work as their own. McConnell-Ginet shared with us the importance of the proper use of words when communicating to an audience and how words can easily be misunderstood if not explained thoroughly with the use of critical thinking. Ritter discussed the topic of plagiarism and how easily it is these days to purchase the work of others to submit as your own work, which is a plagiarism at it’s best.

Online education has been one of the largest growing concepts of learning new skills and gain knowledge throughout the digital world. Over ten years ago educational institutes were using textbooks, blackboards and paper to teach higher learning techniques. While online education is a part of the digital society it gives many people ways to balance life and accomplish an online degree for success. According to the code of conduct at Clarion University plagiarism is “the use of another's words without attribution and without enclosing the words in quotation marks. Plagiarism may also be defined as the act of taking the ideas or expressions of ideas of another person and representing them as one's own--even if the original paper has been paraphrased or otherwise modified.” (“Department of Nursing” ) A lot of people, including myself have been confused of what plagiarism really means. Through my research I found that there are many different kinds of plagiarism and that a lot of people do it without even being aware they are. Plagiarism is defined as using others people’s ideas, writings, and quotes without giving credit to the author by citing the material in the paper. Plagiarism can come from copying many things including charts, graphs, text, and music. Even paraphrasing an author’s work without citing it can be considered plagiarism. Plagiarism certainly has been around long before the first research project was assigned. One of the most famous scientists Gregor Mendel had his work plagiarized by another scientist Hugo de Vries in the 19th century.[1] Mendel had come up with breakthroughs in genetics, but no one realized what he had accomplished. Plagiarism is an illegal form of copying, it is when you take work that someone else has done and calling it your own. Plagiarism is illegal, and is unfair to the author who actually took the time to write it. Plagiarism, even if on accident is still stealing work from others. By plagiarizing you are not only hurting the people around you, but you are also hurting yourself because by plagiarizing you aren’t learning anything for yourself. People who plagiarize don’t only hurt themselves, they also hurt the people around them, like their classmates and the school they attend.

Plagiarism takes various forms. A student may cheat doing something as extreme as purchasing a paper, hiring someone to write a paper or turning in a paper freely provided by a friend. Many students unknowingly commit Plagiarism by failing to properly cite their sources crediting the authors. Still others cite, but plagiarize by coping much too much and writing far, far too little of their own synthesized thoughts and ideas. Students must be careful about copying too much. Without regard to the needs of basic writing students; Generally speaking, special privileges under no circumstances should be permitted in such a professional setting. Everyone should be treated equally despite the fact of what English class they 're in. I feel as though the idea of having the policy rules being altered should be disregarded. Because to me even though an individual is uninformed on how plagiarism works. That does not necessarily mean that they 're incapable of managing to learn as they go and apply the information being learned or taught about plagiarism in a classroom setting or on campus. With all things considered, if professors and administrators were to revise the policy they would be perceived as being immensely sympathetic in relation to student 's actions towards plagiarism. Provided that this would then permit the student 's to be in a more heighten repetitive stage and continue that plagiarism behavior.

Introduction Plagiarism is using other’s ideas and words and not acknowledging and giving credit to them. It is a serious violation of Academic Integrity. In the past, many high-profiles people are exposed for this academic misconduct. Reasons for plagiarism are many and the consequences that come along with it are a matter of concern. With the advancement of technology plagiarism is not easy detectable, but institutions are putting more effort in controlling this dire situation by implementing policies and procedures. These violations are taken seriously, and measures are taken to inform the students beforehand so there will be no excuse left for not knowing. Sheridan is one of the best example of institutions who laid out a systematic procedure to make its policy clear, and remove any ambiguity related to any form of cheating.

In this paper I will be discussing plagiarism in colleges and why college students tend to plagiarize. “Is it because they wait till the last minute, they believe that it’s quick and easy or they are unclear on how to use quotations or paraphrase” (Insley, 184). I believe that some students in college tend to plagiarize because they are lazy, they are confused on what the assignment is asking them to do or because they are under too much pressure from the work load at hand.

I have read and understood the rules relating to plagiarism and related forms of cheating as included in the Course Information Booklet supplied for this course. I understand that providing only a reference when directly quoting work, without also using quotation
