For the entirety of my life, my father has struggled with alcoholism. My father’s addiction left me and my family with no choice but to separate ourselves from him eight years ago. For those eight years, I resented the man we had left. How could I not? His alcoholism, his selfish addiction, had taken my childhood memories of laughter and happiness, and left me with ones of worry and fear. I wondered how he could be selfish enough to idly watch his family suffer as a result of him.

Augusten is just an average man in his twenties, he lives in Manhattan, New York, works in advertising, and has plenty of money. But there is one thing that makes him anything but. When an average man may be having one or two drinks, Augusten had eleven. His whole life revolved around alcohol. He would stay out going to bars all night, and never go home. At work you could smell the alcohol in his pores and his breath. With his job on the line, Augusten was asked to go to rehab.
Throughout the decades, alcoholism has become a common issue that has become the cause of the deterioration of many relationships. In Scott Russell Sanders essay, “Under the Influence”, it is demonstrated how his relationship with his father continuously weakens due to the effects of alcohol. In order to create a deeper understanding of the impacts that alcohol consumption has on families, Sanders uses information from sources such as medical journals with actual statistics that increase the relevance of the story. In Sanders’ essay, “Under the Influence”, the author uses references such as dictionaries, medical journals, and the

Many adults can enjoy a drink or two from time to time without any issues, but just one drink can cause over seventeen million Americans’ lives to spiral out of control. Though most people do not have issues with drinking alcoholic beverages, many have a condition which causes their brain to function differently when they consume alcohol. This disease can be deadly for both the alcoholic and those around them. Alcoholism can control someone’s life, and even though it is a societal issue that is still being addressed, more people are seeking treatment to better themselves. Alcoholism, excessive consumption of alcohol that results in dependence, is caused by genetics and environmental factors that result in harmful effects on the body of the drinker and the safety of society; however, therapy and support groups are helping alcoholics recover today, and medications undergoing trial could allow them to live normal lives in the future.
“2 billion people worldwide consume alcohol. 24% of people in the United States over the age of 11, most of them male, binge-drink each month (NSDUH, 2010). Nearly 7 percent of persons over 11 years of age binge-drinking at least five times each month (NSDUH,2010).” (Comer, 2014) With such high amount of people who consume alcohol, alcoholism can be considered one of the most common substance abuse worldwide. Teenage drinking has become a prevalent issue and is extremely dangerous to the rest of society. With young brains reaching full development at the age of 25, it is no wonder that adding alcohol into the mix has serious repercussions. This article is a great wakeup call for teenagers. We all fall victim to the peer pressures of alcohol consumption. Many times, alcohol seems like the best answer in order to fit in and be more sociable, as Ben Yeager stated. Yeager’s story is one that hit home on many levels. His story is so tangible and can easily be the fate of many kids I know at school. While Yeager’s story is relatable, it achieves it purpose of advocating against drinking. As the reader, I grimaced through his
In Carver’s story “Where I’m Calling From” one of the characters explains that the alcoholic character in the story loved his wife, his kids, his job but “for some reason – who knows why we do what we do? – his drinking picked up.” (Cathedral Stories). According to the story the character’s drink changed from beer to gin, he stopped coming home for dinner, he started adding vodka to his work thermos, and he started becoming violent towards his family. In “Where I’m Calling From” Carver also has the character explain the alcoholic character’s actions by stating “things got out of hand.
Why do teenagers choose to drink? This question is ever-present in the minds of parents and caregivers. Teenagers who drink do not comprehend the widespread and longterm effects of their actions. Consuming alcohol is very harmful to the teenager, friends, family, and even strangers. Nearly ten million young people ages twelve to twenty reported consuming alcohol in the past thirty days, with “consumed” being defined as more than a couple sips (“11 Fact About Teens And Alcohol”). These are not good numbers for underaged individuals. Teen drinking is an important factor which can lead to serious injury or death. Teen drinking is a serious issue with life-altering consequences and cannot be ignored.
Alcoholism is a sickness that affects all people, but unfortunately, in this new generation, it is mainly affecting our teens today. It now is considered as a modern way to have fun. Teens nowadays who drink alcohol think that they can forget their problems and go out of reality if they do that. I personally think it is very bad to drink alcohol because it can turn into an addiction that can rob you of your future. Kody states that she has four rules. Rule one: Everyone is walking on this planet. Rule 2: Things rarely turn out the way you planned it. Rule 3: Everyone gets knocked down. Rule 4: After you take those shots, it’s time to stand up and walk on to continue in life. This quote means that everyone is the same and that we all make these mistakes, but we have to be strong and fight through the pain and the sorrow. This statement also revolves around alcoholism. Throughout this book, Kody has always encouraged and taught teens to not drink or to stop drinking. Even in one of her major interviews, she had pleaded to us teens to stop drinking cause it’s not worth it. Drugs between teenagers are the most serious problem because it will cost you a physical and mental change. Most of the teenagers who use them are following their friend’s or just like the feeling. Alcoholism is classified as a chronic illness, an addiction that affects the physical condition of a person as well as the mental. With one in every twelve adults living with alcohol abuse, it is a possibility that the children of these people will grow up and follow their parents. In this pattern there is a never ending cycle of alcohol abuse and dependence that has resulted in alcohol being ranked as the third leading cause of behavior related deaths in America (Facts About Alcohol. 2015, July). There is a higher risk for teenagers who consume alcohol because their brains are not fully developed. The alcohol that they drink suppresses the brain and causes deterioration in memory and learning (Impact of alcohol on the developing brain. 2014). In this paper I will examine the source and reason behind teenage alcoholism and determine the effects the destructive drug of alcohol has on teenagers in different aspects of their lives.
Many children grow up with parents that are alcoholics. These children are affected directily causing different problems growing up, and continuing into the adult lives of the indidvuals. This semester I was introducted to author John Cheevers. Out of all of Cheevers short stories three delt with children who had parents that drink excessively. The children all reacted in different ways to how the parents was treating them. “Children of alcoholics family enviroments are characterized by disruption, deviant parenting role, inadequate parenting, disturbed parent-child relationship” (kenneth J. Sher PH.D). The Sarrow of Gin amy parents shows a ton of traits that is consider inadaquate parenting. “ they were always at her. Amy please try to take more pains with your Apperence.” (pg 199 john cheevers). Also leaving Amy with the new cook while they go out to the neighbors house to have
As most teenager’s cross between childhood to adulthood, whether to drink or smoke is one of the most difficult choices they have to make. It is perfectly natural to want to try new things from time to time, but to abuse drinking should not be one. No matter what one argues, during this period, most teens are likely to try alcohol and or drugs not knowing the effects it has on their brain or health. Teenagers who grow up around parents who abuse alcohol follows their parent’s footstep. It is important that parents talk to their kids at a much younger age about the use of alcohol. Ninety percent of times, once they get addicted to drinking it is hard for them to stop. There are many reason why teenagers drink alcohol, but the most common reasons are because of peer pressure, to have fun, or wanting to look or feel grown.
