I don’t know how to start this, but I believe that everyone in life at least goes through one sort of form of an obstacle. An obstacle I face in life right now would have to be the fact that my grandma is working her butt off just so she can keep her family alive. The only reason why this bothers me is because I can’t do anything about it. Like I want to help by working, but I’m only 14 and still have two more years until I can get a part time job. Out of my 35yrs of life I have ovecame so many obstacles. Being a struggling single parent, and just not satisified with how my life was going there are so many that I can talk about but these three where my biggest obstacles. But with my praying family I was against all odds.

The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

Have you ever been scared to accomplish a challenge? I'm going to be talking about the time when I accomplished one of the challenges that I have always wanted to learn how to do. Starting my second semester in Modern I, I was really excited to see what new things I would learn and what new goals I needed to set for myself. I was definitely ready to push myself and work even harder than the semester before. During my second semester I set only two new goals and kept one from first semester. The two goals that I set included, getting stronger in my inversions and watching the alignment of my hip. The goal that I kept from last semester was making sure that I was coming to class alert and ready to work. After second semester mid-term, I started to work a lot on building strength in my arms. In my culture, society looks down at mental illness and when news of mental illness gets out in the society, one’s reputation is pretty much destroyed. My elder brother, Imran, was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was a teenager. My family was still living in Bangladesh at the time and my brother’s illness was treated as a secret by my parents. My parents went above and beyond to hide my brother’s illness because we come from a culture that is quick to condemn parents for their children being abnormal, my family felt very protective of the fact that we had mental illness in our family. Family visitation and guests in our home were strictly monitored by my mother and my siblings and I were coached to make excuses for my brother. My brother’s illness shaped me as a person because I realized that I needed to be able to overcome the obstacles life throws in my way in order to take care of my family.

Booker T. Washington once wrote “Successes isn’t measured by the position you reach in life. It’s measured by the obstacles you overcome” An obstacle I had to face and overcome would be the time I injured my ankle. How did I overcome this obstacle you may ask? I overcame this obstacle by being positive and having a good attitude, almost every step of the way.

Obstacles. What are they? Obstacles are every day little things, big or small. An obstacle could be getting up in the morning, going to school or work, homework, making dinner, or maybe training for a marathon. We may not realize it, but we face some type of obstacle every day. Merriam-Webster defines growing up as such; to grow toward or arrive at full stature or physical or mental maturity. Growing up is like getting hit in the face with a brick. The brick being a metaphor for my transition into becoming an adult. My transition began at the beginning of the summer when some of my best friends graduated high school and were getting ready to go off to college. The four pink walls that I stared at everyday until I was at the age of nine trapped me from my dreams, passions, originality, and youth. Outside those walls my life consisted of going to school smiling away the truth, then shortly after going home to take care of my baby sister or to see my mom with a coffee cup in her hand that sometimes contain funny smelling juice in it, and having a constant battle with a belt or anything my mom could get her hands on. Growing with my mother meant growing up in an abusive home, but that wasn’t the obstacle I had to face. While my application may seem as if my life is frolicsome without any worries, I continue to overcome obstacles daily. I may appear to possess great qualities such as a competitive grade point average, a high class rank, and many characteristics others strive to acquire. However, I have experienced obstacles I fell that no child should have to ever experience in their lifetime. As a six year old, my parents divorced, leaving me confused and upset. Granted, most children do not understand when their parents go their separate ways, but I did because I witnessed the fights, the bickering, and more.

Obstacles and barriers are in our everyday life. But it is what we do and how we react that helps us grow. Some are small causing short disarray while others might change a person’s life. In my short seventeen years, I have found the most difficult obstacle I have had to encounter was my parents divorce. I was mere 10 years old when my parents separated. It definitely took a toll on me. Often times I felt cold, alone, and broken. My mother scooped me up and put me back together. Having my mom play the role of both a mother and father really opened my eyes. Growing up, I would see my mom break her back just to give us, her children, food, clothes, and a roof over our heads.
