The Evil Iago Language can hurt. Shakespeare shows a good tragic story of harsh language through a man with the name of Iago in his play, “Othello.” Othello, the main character in this play, is a black general of the Venetian Army. He secretly marries a white woman by the name of Desdemona. Othello trusts his two top soldiers, Cassio and Iago, which knows about the marriage. But, Othello doesn’t know that Iago is holding a grudge against him because of hearing fake rumors. Moreover, Iago gets jealous of Cassio getting the promotion from Othello. This makes Iago fake his loyalness and friendship with Othello. In order for Iago to be even with Othello, Iago plans to ruin his friendship with Cassio and his relationship with Desdemona. For example, Iago quotes “I know not if’t be true; Yet I, for mere suspicion in that kind, will do as if for surety.” In this line, Iago is talking about one of the rumors he hears: Othello sleeping with his wife. It shows us that Iago is only looking for trouble, even if those rumors weren’t true. He makes himself believe it happened just so he can cause hatred. In addition, since Iago knows about Othello’s marriage and Cassio’s promotion, he plans to lie to Othello about Cassio. Iago has the idea to “abuse Othello’s ear that he is too familiar with his wife.” To have Othello’s trust, he tries to get Othello to be mad at Desdemona for having an affair with Cassio. This makes Othello trust Iago the most, and he repeats lies to keep gaining that trust. “The Moor is of a free and open nature that thinks men honest that but seem to be.” In this quote, Iago is manipulating Othello to achieve what he wants. He knows love would be Othello’s weak spot because he just got married so he takes advantage of that.
