Two individuals may be the best of friends but when one individual is taken in by jealousy over the other he or she will do anything in his or her power to ruin the other individual’s life; this is where the dilemma arises. William Shakespeare, the playwright of Othello portrays a story about a highly honoured character Othello who is the general of the state of Venice. Iago portrays himself as very loyal and true friend to Othello while his other side is much more ruthless and cruel towards the general. Othello gives Michael Cassio a position as his personal lieutenant, but Iago is highly jealous of this situation because he is the one that is closer to Othello and should acquire the position. Iago is not the same when he is with Othello but Iago’s character totally changes when he is not with Othello. When Iago finds out that Othello appointed Cassio as his lieutenant, Iago is extremely envious and he plots a plan against Othello by deceiving the trust that they both carry. “I’ll put this pestilence into his ear.” (II.iii.334). This refers to Iago plotting to say his lies to Othello which demonstrates Iago being overwhelmed by jealousy. Iago puts all the falsehood into the general’s ear which becomes easier for him to do as Othello puts his full trust on the rival. Iago is a harsh and a coldblooded man that wants revenge through his master by plotting an atrocious plan and putting all falsehood into his ear just to obtain the higher position. Now that Cassio is the lieutenant of Othello Iago plots a plan for Cassio to resign off his duty forever so that he can become the lieutenant he always wanted. Iago misdirected Cassio by getting him drunk one night which made Othello appoint Iago as Cassio’s substitute. “O, they are our friends-but one cup; I’ll drink for you” (II.iii.32). This proves that Iago is trying to make Cassio drunk on the night of his watch which was assigned by Othello.
