There are many ways to measure success. However, nursing students measure their success by graduating out of the school of his or her choice. Additionally, on the way to success nursing students’ face many challenges that may hinder them effectively completing the nursing program.
This paper discusses two challenges that I have with obtaining success in the nursing program; the psychological and the physical distress of being a single mother. Furthermore, discusses four strategies for success in the nursing program; stay organized, study groups, take care of oneself, and invest in comfortable shoes. Lastly, discuss four example of how I will add those strategies in my study plan.

Staying organized means becoming familiar with the course schedule and planning times throughout the day to study and read. Likewise, prioritization of work is important, creating and maintaining task list and finding a designated place to keep all nursing school supplies decreases the chances of losing things (Sayles, Shelton, & Powell, 2003).
Study Groups
Study groups are important in increasing the success rates of nursing students. It enable students to connect with other nursing students, as well as studying together and sharing study habits. Another advantage of joining or starting a study group is that students are surround by liked minded people that understand the psychological and physical pressures of nursing school (Anderson, 2016). A great way to test how well you know a topic is to teach it to someone else, study groups make that possible.
Take Care of Oneself and Invest in Comfortable Shoes The requirement of nursing school is that students are fully committed and students tend to forget about taking care of themselves and investing in comfortable footwear for labs and clinical. According to Anderson (2016) keeping a healthy eating habit is beneficial for nursing students as they may find themselves pulling all-nighters and spending endless amount of time in the library. Eating healthy food, sleeping, exercising regularly and investing in comfortable shoes is
The transition from student nurse to registered nurse can be exciting, stressful and challenging and reality shock can be experienced (Kaihlanen, Lakanmaa, & Salminen, 2013). The skills knowledge and values learned during the 3 years period of the undergraduate program should be demonstrated while working as a Registered nurse. The transition from nursing student to professional nurse is complex and multifaceted experience (Clark & Springer, 2012). Therefore, it’s essential to guide the student during their learning process for their professional development. It is difficult for the student nurse to work on their own unsupervised right after completing their program. Being independent registered nurse will take lots of practice skills wise and knowledge wise. The transition from student to staff nurse ‘is a common rite of passage that marks the end of initial educational preparation in the discipline and the
In my current role as a nurse educator I feel the desire to pursue my dream of obtaining a master’s degree, specializing in nursing education. It has been 27 years since I have sat in the student chair in a classroom; therefore, I anticipate a number of challenges and barriers to overcome. In this paper I will present and describe three challenges that I expect to be faced with over the next two years. I will also discuss the strategies I plan to use to address these challenges.
The beginning of a new graduate nurses career rarely begins easily, there seems to be a distinct disconnect between the fantasy of what it means to be a nurse and the reality of bedside nursing. Nursing school seems to feed into this disconnection, in that it does not prepare the new graduate registered nurse (NGRN) for their professional practice. What nursing school does is give the NGRN the basics, a peak into what is to come. The NGRN has to find out for themselves what the true meaning of being a nurse is and if it fits their preconceived ideas.
As a first semester nursing student my journey into developing nursing skills has just begun,
Growing up my father taught me many life lessons; one that I will never forget was when he told me: “A man living in a house without light will never know where he is going or what he wants to do.” At the time I did not understand what that meant until one day he explained in to me. Without proper goals a person is just lost in darkness and unable to find their way in life. By working towards my goals, I feel that I am constantly growing as an individual and learning how to approach all sorts of situations that life throws at me. Recently, being a part of the EOF Nursing School Program at Rutgers University, I feel that I have just set the foundation to achieving my goals which include graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing alongside one day opening a home for the less fortunate in Guyana.
As age increases, so do the number of responsibilities assumed in our lives. We have careers, family that needs taking care of, and homes that need maintenance. These responsibilities can be obstacles when returning to school and obtaining a higher degree such as a Master’s of Science. Although there are challenges, the drive for higher learning never subsides in some people. In this paper, I will review my reasons for continuing my education and obtaining my Master’s degree in Nursing and discuss my short- and long-term goals as well as what challenges I may face to achieve these goals. I will also analyze my strength and weakness in
I once heard someone say, “Find something you love to do and you’ll always be successful.” If you want to be in a field where you are continually learning, nursing would be the top pick. This paper will reflect the journey I have taken from Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with the incorporation of my learning objectives from my clinical course.
Self-care is taking a strategic measure to ensure that one is safe and stays in focus. They are personal decisions that one takes for to improve their health. In this case, my self-care is to ensure that I remain in line with the nursing school and nursing career in general, and set strategies to implement the key options that I have chosen. These include time management, exercising, and working fewer hours while in nursing school. The field of nursing is diverse (Lever, 2010, p. 105). It requires focus to be able to cope with the daily challenges. However, caution should be taken when pursuing nursing as a profession. Nursing school requires discipline and compliance to the regulation in both class and at work. The paper will discuss the various measures that I will adopt to secure my future career in nursing and highlight how I will cope with stress while in nursing school.
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) fact sheet (2014) explains the findings of the research completed by The Bureau of Labor Statistics, leading one that is reading the fact sheet to realize that the nursing shortage will only worsen in the coming years. First and foremost, the number of nurses that are reaching retirement age, and the number of nurses that are leaving the profession is proven to have a drastic impact on the profession; secondly the number of students enrolling in nursing classes do not match the demand that for upcoming years. Due to the lack of Master and Doctoral prepared nurses, many students are denied entry into nurse training, which is noted and continues to be one of the most important factors of
Registered nursing is among the top 10 occupations with the largest job growth’’ according to The Bureau of Statistics but why? Registered nursing is all over the world. In order to ensure my success in nursing school I put in placed serval plans. My first plan is to go from working fourth hours to twenty. My husband has agree to be more active with the kids so that I can dedicate at lest two study hours per one instruction hr. My mother has agree to help out financially with the school cost. I feel that with the support of my family and other plans to study I will succeed in nursing school.

The idea of returning to school to master new skills to compete in the workplace is an excellent goal for any working adult. However, it is important for the working adult to understand success is base upon the journey taken and the path chosen by someone. One must realize there will be many barriers and difficulties along the way; however, with dedication, ability to prioritize, and motivation to stay focus, I will succeed and graduate with my Master degree in Nursing in October 2017. For me to be successful in achieving this goal, there are different pathways that I must chose and followed. These are assessing my learning styles, finding ways to manage my time, money, and stress, and setting S.M.A.R.T goals.
“Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, It requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter´s or sculptor´s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God´s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts.” Spoken by a true nurse, Florence Nightingale; a pioneer of nursing and a reformer of hospital sanitation methods.
Since the beginning of the nursing profession, there have always been many students who want to become nurses. In the Middle Ages and the rise of Christianity, nurses were not like nurses today but they were radically different. As time went on, however, the profession emerged into what it is today. Today, nurses are extremely important to the work of the medical field. The medical field is booming with new employees every day. Because of this, the demand for students achieving a higher degree is at an all-time high as employers want more versatile employees. This can be a strain on those pursuing these degrees. Especially for those who work while they go to school. Students going to school and working at the same time can become very stressed, overworked, and may drop out. This causes the industry to spend extra money to keep the individuals on track. In spite of the medical industry’s efforts, nursing students and certified nurses are still quitting their nursing duties and seeking second jobs due to unfair pay wage and strenuous workload.
