Teachers are in a profession that requires a lifelong approach to learning; the direction of this unit is at exploring one's own capabilities, and to start scaffolding our own learning. Knowing what one can do, can direct one to further improvements (Dinham, 2014, pp. 62-63). This unit is a great start to personal learning of the arts. There is evidence of improvement of learning and have responded to the above in an appropriate way with in text references, in a creative thinking self-expression meaning making of ideas.
Most useful has been the readings, as there is a huge amount of relevant information in the textbook that can be learned. All who well, some of it was already known through previous courses and work, some of it was common sense

Music is everywhere and has been a part of human existence for eons (Dinham, 2014, p. 265). Music has been a part of Australian schools for the last hundred of years, over the last fifteen years the application of music has seen a drastic change with the appearance of the internet and increase of accessibility. In spit of this the elements of music has not changed and forms the basis of music. When teachers or children sing they use those elements automatically (Dinham, 2014, p. 270). The curriculum has an expectation that children will learn to listen to music, compose and make music (ACARA, July, 2013, p. 93). There is a range of music that can be used to teach children; explore music concepts, by singing, playing instruments, by listening, composing songs or music, dancing or moving on music. Children, through participation and appreciation will discover about themselves form bonds with other children and become more aware of different cultures (Dinham, 2014, p. 266). Teacher’s participation, regardless of status, need to ensure that children are getting an education in music. The opportunities and experiences, to create, perform and record given to us as pre services teachers will be of a great help when facing the task of teaching children music in schools. I have been diagnosed with Type One Juvenile Diabetes, my middle sister has been diagnosed Vitiligo, my youngest sister has a form of Uveitis, and my mother has been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. In order to treat our respective diseases we need to take the prescribed medications that are each very costly and do not have a generic brand available on the pharmaceutical market. As an Arab immigrant who was raised in the United States since he was seven years old, who lived in Michigan seeing Arabs everyday and never felt like he was in a foreign country; and moving to NYC in 2015, changed the whole style of my life. NYC the tremendous city that I couldn’t find the people that I knew and that I understood nor those that understands me because of our massive cultural differences, and believes. The biggest problem is when I started school in NYC. The school system was different because in NYC they had regents, also their credit requirements were different, for that I was behind in credits and didn’t know what was the regents. Also, I came to school almost at the end of the First marking period of the second semester of freshman year.

Before starting my day, I usually put on a earphone and press “shuffle play” on my Throwback playlist on my Spotify account. The most recent five songs that I have listened to before writing this assignment was You Rock My World - With intro by Michael Jackson, Baby, I’m Back by Baby Bash, Just The Two Of Us by Grover Washington, Charlene by Anthony Hamilton, and Show Me The Way by Earth Wind & Fire. Interestingly I have never heard these songs until last year because I was only exposed to music that was on the radio station such as 94.9 or 106.1 where newest and trending songs were played most often. While sitting at my desk in a classroom overflowing with colorful decorations, my 1st grade classmates and I were taught how to add and subtract. At that moment, I had no idea that numbers would soon become one of the biggest factors in my life. Before I knew it, my journey as a number on a sheet of paper began. From third grade to my senior year of high school, I have been tested in every way, shape, and form and compared to kids all around the country. My test scores decided if I was able to move on to the next grade, what classes I took, and will soon factor into what college I will be attending. The first things I noticed were block paragraphs that were numbered. Also, I noticed numbers and dates.
As students grow older, their language skills vastly grow and they become capable of using descriptive words to express emotions, refer to objects, and describe what they’re seeing. For young children and kids just entering school, creating or discussing art teaches kids descriptive words such as colors and shapes. Kids are able to communicate better and ask for objects by describing them, such as “the yellow ball” or “the blue crayon.” According to Grace Hwang Lynch, kids as young as a year old are capable of this; one-year-olds can crumple up a piece of paper and refer to it as a “ball” (Lynch).
Music is a big part of today’s children and the learning process. When most babies begin learning they learn things through song and it is important to incorporate these tactics in the classroom. Music has a great ability to stimulate students and it reaches tactile, auditory and visual learners (Rajan, 2010). This is a great way to ensure that the teacher is differentiating to meet the needs of all their students.
In order to understand the relationship between music and cognitive processes, it is important to understand how music is perceived and processed in the brain. Musical perception and cognition are both actively constructed by the listener, as opposed to being passively transferred from the performer to the listener (Iyer, 159). There are three levels of musical perception: the raw psychophysical perception of tones, the perception of abstract qualities of tones apart from their source, and the apprehension of environmental objects that give rise to the sound events (Handel, 181). According to Stephen Handel, the first level of perception is when the listener first hears and perceives a musical stimulus such as melody, harmony, tonality, rhythm, meter, and form. Taking the aims and values stated by UNESCO and the Convention on the Rights of the Child as my foundation, for the purpose of this assignment, I will be relatingthe aims and values of arts education highlighted by Swanwick (1988)to our scheme of work.Swanwick has argued that the arts were not like dreaming but were more like play. However, he has stressed that they were not blatantly just play which was liable to vanish over time. According to him, activities in the arts were unique in such a way that the three elements of play which weresignificant to learning – mastery, imitation and imagination –could be intentionally continued and made better through and beyond childhood. Just as the research and studies have shown, Swanwick also agreed that the arts were essential for developing and sustaining the mind and that they were also indispensable for language

Through music children have the opportunity to use their bodies in rhythmic ways. Children benefit through use music in many ways such as language development, socialising and communication.
Many researchers have studied the subject of teaching music and methods to increase musical understanding in the elementary and secondary school settings. Many pedagogical developers have presented methods in which they feel are most effective. “Critical pedagogy is not a traditional music-teaching method, as it combines philosophy and pedagogy, theory and practice. Unlike Orff, Kodály, or Dalcroze, there are no specific teaching techniques or prescribed body of musical repertoire students must hear or perform in the classroom. There are no required materials, such as instruments or tennis balls, and no prescribed scope and sequence” (Abrahams, 2005, p. 12). Abrahams continues that pedagogy comes from a rich and varied music program, and encourages multiple and liberating experiences in the learning process.
