In the article titled “ Maybe We All Need a Little Less Balance” written by Brad Stulberg, He talks about how through the time in his life the only time he has felt any enjoyment or felt happy is when he’s been living in the moment and being spontaneous. Whether that be going to a concert or randomly taking a hike. Trying to divide your life and the activities that come with it is not the way to go. Brad has come across and gotten to know many excellent performers in his life and they’ve all said the same thing. There’s a distinct correlation between being happy, feeling alive and doing something that makes you feel that way and giving it your all. You can’t limit yourself to sticking to a routine and trying to be happy. Letting go and feeling
He also backs his theory by giving examples of "some typical lifestyles and some not so typical lifestyles", which means he shows you a complete profile of a persons life including: "Mother and fathers name and occupation, Principal child-rearer,
When Christopher McCandless abandoned society to “walk into the wild”, he thought he was going to achieve true serenity, and for a short amount of time he did. Yet in the end, his journey into the wild killed him, and he realized too late that he needed other people in order to survive. In McCandless’ final moments, he writes, “happiness only real when shared” (Krakauer 189). When McCandless finally comes to the realization that to be truly happy, you need other people, it is too late. McCandless was more alone in the wild than in society, and his isolation ultimately leads to his untimely
“The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” (Krakauer, 56) In the quote it’s showing how Chris believes joy comes from traveling and gaining new experiences, which is the exact definition of wanderlust. McCandless even says, “The core of a mans spirit comes from new experiences.” (Krakauer, 57) Chris was always trying to find new experiences that would enhance his life. He believed that he wouldn’t truly be happy until he was away from society with no restrictions. All in all Chris can easily be described as wanderlust, because the foundation of his life was the desire to
Regarding activities and how they contribute to his happiness Murray said, "Keeping busy doing things all day long, learning and being with people that I enjoy, not isolating myself from others." For Murray this includes exercising regularly, attending classes, golfing, stamp collecting, and creating craft works.
To begin, living freely, being one with nature, and not conforming to society is what Chris McCandless shows through his actions. Living freely is what the meaning of life is to Chris McCandless as shown through his actions. This quote is from one of his letters he wrote to his friends, “ This is the last communication you shall receive from me. I now walk out to live amongst the wild. Take care it was great knowing you” (Krakauer 69). This is an example of him living freely by cutting off all his communications with his friends and going to live in the wilderness. Furthermore, Chris McCandless finds it important to become one with nature and to be one with it. By going into the wild he is surrounding himself with nature and nothing else,“The beauty of this country is becoming part of me”(Krakauer 91). What this means is that through living in the wild he becomes closer to his surroundings and finds out what life really means. Lastly, the final meaning of life is to not to conform to society as Chris McCandless did. He did this through not listing to people who just wanted to make him better, “But if you tried to coach him, to polish his skill, to bring out that final ten percent, a wall went up. He resisted instruction of any kind”(Krakauer 111). This shows nonconformity by him not accepting advice from anyone to make his skill the best he is resisting giving into what everyone wants him to do and not conforming to society.
Chris expressed his principal that, ”Nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure” (Chapter 1, Krakauer). He saw a conventional lifestyle as restricting to his adventurous soul, he thought he could not prosper without. Chris was very independent and did not like counting on others for help which is why he found life away from society extremely fulfilling. He found peace and joy out of living off the grid, because it was able to provide a complete sense of independence which he thrived off of and found most satisfying way to live life. He tried to eliminate his need for outside help as much as he could. Chris believed that if he limited his needs for useless luxury goods and mainstreamed objects, he would be able to live completely independent and not have to rely on anyone for help. In the author’s note, “He changed his name, gave entire balance of twenty-four-thousand-dollar savings account to charity, abandoned his car, and burned all his
True happiness is a goal of every person on this planet. What true happiness is remains a mystery for most, but not all. Chris McCandless, the main character in the movie “ Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer, devoted his life to finding true happiness within. Chris was a very smart college student with a troubled family life. While many in his situation turn to drugs or alcohol, Chris turned to the wise words of transcendentalist writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau.
shows us how followed his dreams and was determined to also do them. This novelle also gives us a thought of how we should see life compared to everyone else & if life comes with wanting to fit fit in with everyone else. When you think of someone going the other direction or not fitting in,it makes them feel different.
Thus showing that if he would have tried living with new people or living with a girlfriend maybe it could have changed his view on how actual happiness feels like. For instance this quote states “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived”(Thoreau). This would show that this ideya off living off the land a free man wasn't the key to happiness, showing us that living as a part of a community without communication makes you no longer in peace with your own
After being in the wild for over three months, both find their new euphoria. Although slightly different, they both come to the conclusion that happiness can be found in the wild. That it is a good place to cope with something “In moments among my various agonies, I noticed the beauty that surrounded me, the wonder of things both small and large: the color of a desert flower that brushed against me on the trail or the grand sweep of the sky as the sun faded over the mountains” (Strayed 67). Similarly, McCandless found happiness being alone in the wild: “There is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon , for each day to have a new and different sun” (Krakauer 57). They both have found their euphoria in nature, but desire for something more than living in their euphorias alone.
A few short months into his pursuit of freedom and happiness, in the interior of Alaska, McCandless experienced a revelation that unfortunately dawned on him only after he was unable to escape the wild. His realization was “HAPPINESS IS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED” (188). From the beginning of time, humans have had an inherent need to interact with others, to love, to laugh, to depend on one another for emotional and physical support. Without these reciprocal actions, humans tend to become introverted and angry at the world, as was proven by McCandless. Grievously, McCandless’s desire to forgive his parents and return to civilization manifested itself too late; he was unable to escape the interior. He wrote; “BUT IN WEAKEST CONDITION OF LIFE. DEATH LOOMS AS SERIOUS THREAT. TOO WEAK
In his speech, he makes many points on how to live your life the best way possible. He also mentions how things are
In his assertion, Sonny Rollins states his life does not revolve around enjoying his life through other people's ways of finding happiness. He believes enjoyment means living for oneself. Sonny Rollins understands his thoughts and opinions are not universal, but to him they are true, therefore writing in first person and not aiming to validate his assertion.
As the short text goes on we see how much impact his upbringing had on him as a child emotionally. For example immortal technique says “he friended for props like addicts with pipes and needles so he felt he had to prove to everyone he was evil a feeble minded young man with infinite potential the product of a ghetto breed capitalistic would bleed, but he was sick of selling trees and gave in to his greed”. This highlights the purpose, how we are brought up as children can affect the way we understand and perceive things as we grow, and can also influence the path we decide to take in life. It also highlights the purpose, we are so blinded by the want for materialistic things that we overlook our own intelligence and moral values to fulfill our ‘desires’ and satisfy ourselves. This is illustrated in another part when immortal technique says “so now he had a choice between going back to his life or making money with mad men, up in the cife. His dreams about cars and ice, made him agree, a hardcore n*gga is all he ever wanted to
"Have dinner with your family or walk in the park with friends. If you're so inclined, put in some good hours at the office or at your favorite charity, temple or church. Work on your jump shot or your child's model trains. With luck, you'll find happiness by the by. If not, your time won't be wasted. You may even bring a little joy to the world,”(McMahon Par 12). One of the happiest moments of my life was when I was with my family, sitting around the tv watching a funny movie. We were all having a good time and were very happy. This made me love to spend time with my family, because we shared laughter and enjoyed each other's company. So therefore, I agree with McMahon that being less selfish and spending time with the people you love and doing what you love brings happiness.
