Throughout the drama, “A Christmas Carol”, the playwright, Charles Dickens, tells a story of a man who is irritable and only cared about money. He realized his mistake before it was too late. The main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, is able to change his life when he meets various ghosts. Three events that caused Scrooge to change includes visits from The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present, and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.
To start off, The Ghost of Christmas Past visits Scrooge in his dreams on Christmas Eve.
The Ghost shows Scrooge’s childhood. In Act One, page 251, it states “Look, you, sir, a school ahead. The schoolroom is not quite deserted. A solitary child neglected by his friends, is left there still. ”[ Scrooge falls to the ground; sobbing as he sees, and we see, a small boy, the young Scrooge, sitting and weeping, bravely, alone at his desk: alone in a vast space, void.]” In his childhood, he was alone and neglected. He doesn’t want to be reminded of his terrible childhood. It also states,“There was a boy singing a Christmas Carol outside my door last night. I should like to have given him something: that’s all.” He

He see what will happen to him if he continues his ways. In the play it states,” [Scrooge backs into something in the dark behind his spotlight. Scrooge looks at Future, who points to the corpse. Scrooge pulls back the blanket. The corpse is, of course, Scrooge, who screams. He falls aside the bed:weeping.] Spirit, this is a fearful place. In leaving it, I shall not leave its lesson, trust me. Let us go!.. Spirit, let me see some tenderness connected with a death, or that dark chamber, which we just left now, Spirit, will be forever present to me.” When he sees his future, and sees how mostly no one cared, he quickly realized that he needed to change. This proves, that he needs to change his ways if he doesn’t want to end up like what The Ghost of Yet to
In the beginning of the Christmas Carol Scrooge was an old man who didn’t like Christmas, but toward the end he was happy with his friends and family. He has changed much by the ghost that had helped him realize that if he kept going the way he was going that the future was going to be horrible,
By this part in the novel, dickens introduced the next Ghost, the Ghost of Christmas Present. The ghost of Christmas present takes Scrooge to his clerk`s house. Here he witness the unfortunate conditions of their Christmas, however, it doesn’t appear to be so unfortunate at all; although Scrooge notices how Tiny Tim is crippled and at deaths door. He is moved by this sight, and that of his clerk’s family. He had never imagined their lives to be like this before; however it’s astonishing to him, that although extremely poor, they are full of joy and happiness. He notices the simple pleasures of family life as well. Furthermore something strange begins to happen, he sympathises with Tiny Time, who Scrooge understands will die without financial help. Dickens has showed us how scrooge is changing and learning to sympathise, a “skill” he previously didn’t have. "Spirit," said Scrooge, with an interest he had never felt before, "tell me if Tiny Tim will live." ' Dickens once more showing us scrooges new found affections. Additionally when the Spirit predicts “an empty chair if things do not change”, Scrooge is quite
Using the first spirit, Scrooge was forced to face the fact that people viewed him as greedy and selfish, and began to open him up to the fact that he needs to change. The second spirit, The Ghost of Christmas Present, arrived and took Scrooge to the home of a worker of his, Bob Cratchit. It showed the family content, despite barely getting by. When Scrooge saw Bob’s sick son, he began to show worry that he would not survive. When the spirit told him that the son would not make it to next Christmas, this made Scrooge want to help him. This kind of emotion was unlike him, showing that he was changing (CC40). The spirit then took him to several other Christmas gatherings, where he enjoyed himself and played many games, even though he was merely in a dream. This spirit was used to open up Scrooge and showed his inner want to be around people. These thoughts for Scrooge were different than his from the beginning of the novel, showing that the spirits were being used to teach valuable lessons to Scrooge. The final spirit arrived, but would not answer when asked if he was the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Scrooge plead with the ghost to share his lesson with him, fearful of becoming like Marley (CC51). The silent spirit took Scrooge to a series of strange places, showing people discussing the death of a dead rich man. He then began to understand the
The ghost was from the past. It showed him all the bad things that happened in the past all the things. All of his old days came back when the ghost of Christmas past showed him. He showed Scrooge when his sister died and that was the sad part. Then the ghost finally took scrooge back to his house and he lied down and it brought back good and bad memories. That was how the ghost of Christmas past influence
When the spirit first came, Scrooge said, (699) “Tonight, if you have aught to teach me, let me profit by it.” This tells us Scrooge is willing to learn from the Ghost unlike when the Ghost of Christmas past first visited. The first place the Ghost took Scrooge is to Bob Cratchit's family. Bob has many kids, one of which is sick and he uses crutches to get around. This is Tiny Tim. Scrooge asked, (707) “Spirit, tell me of Tiny Tim will live.” Spirit responds, “I see a vacant seat… the child will die.” Scrooge begged, “ No, no, kind Spirit! Say he will be spared!” Scrooge realized that he must change his actions and the amount he pays Bob to save the boy. This shows us that Scrooge has sympathy to the boy and the family. The next place the spirit takes him, is to his nephew's house where they are making fun of Scrooge. But, the nephew toasts scrooge. Scrooge said, (710) “Spirit, please, make me visible! Make me audible! I want to talk to with my nephew and niece.” This shows change because before Scrooge had nothing to do with his family. He also frowned upon his nephew marrying his
In A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is a greedy, selfish man who doesn't think about others. When he meets the ghosts, Past shows how sad he was when he was young and how his greed made him lose his love. Present showed him how he affected those around him and how greedy he is. Future brings him to his death and how no one cared that he died and instead stole from his home. Similarities between the movie and the drama are the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. The differences are the lines and the scenes.
Setting This astonishing story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, shows many interpretations of how society has changed. The main character Scrooge in the beginning is an example of society today, and Scrooge in the end of the story is a illustration of how society should be. Scrooge started as an old grumpy guy who hated christmas, this represents how society is now. after scrooge came to his senses, after three ghosts came to his house and showed him to live in the past, present, and the future, This is an example of society, and how they should be.
In the play "A Christmas Carol" there is really only one main character, and that would be Ebenezer Scrooge. Throughout the play, he is changed by the visits from The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. The most significant events that changed him are when the Ghost of Christmas Past showed Scrooge when his was only a young boy, when present shared that Tiny Tim was sick, and when Future had taken Scrooge to see what was going to happen when he died.
The spirits teach Scrooge's lessons like how they go into the past, when Scrooge was younger and showed Scrooge’s fiance break up with him all because he was more interested in money than her. This is only one of the many lessons he would learn throughout the play. At the end of the story he would be a kind, generous
The ghost then takes Scrooge to his boarding school where he is greeted by his much younger sister Fan expressing how excited she is to spend Christmas all together as a family. “Scrooge seemed uneasy in his mind;” It is here that Scrooge begins to regret the way he treats Fans only son, Scrooges only nephew and become remorseful for rejecting him from his life. We then are introduced to Scrooges old place of work where he was apprenticed by Old Fezziwig. Scrooge is reminded of the way he was treated by his employer. He was respected and was respectful towards him, and the example of Old Fezziwig demonstrates how Scrooge is the exact opposite. This was an example of what a good employer can be, and he wishes to speak to his clerk. “He has the power to render us happy or unhappy; to make our service light or burdensome;” It is now Scrooge begins to understand that he has been making his clerk, Bob Cratchit’s life a misery. The ghost of Christmas past has covered three main aspects of Scrooges past, but the final one is his past relationship with Belle, who he lost because he changed his nature and became more interested in gaining money instead of appreciating what he had. To emphasize the regret Scrooge should feel, the ghost takes him to Belles new home and family, which shakes Scrooge the most because it is what Scrooge missed out on. “When he thought that such another
spirit of the characters develops into an adventurous journey. The setting is Christmas Eve and a poor man is working diligently while the owner, Ebenezer Scrooge, refuses to let him have Christmas Day off. Later that night at Scrooge's house, his old, dead, partner in business, Marley, visits him and tells him to change his ways and that three ghosts will come to haunt him: The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present, and The Ghost of Christmas Future. They all show him scenes in which Scrooge realizes his guilt and eventually make Christmas a better time for everyone he originally affected. Scrooge changes from a cold-hearted miser,
Ebenezer Scrooge has been reminded in the beginning of the story about his old friend, family, his nephew, and Christmas. These facts in the beginning must have bothered him. But the most must have been his friend Marley. After Marley left the book said,”… went straight to bed, without undressing, and fell asleep on the instant.” Scrooge must have been extremely tired and that’s when he started to dream.” When Scrooge and the Spirits of Christmas Past visit Scrooge’s past, Scrooge heard that it was all silent outside. This is some how wrong because during Christmas Eve adults and children are out playing, getting last minute gifts, or having a feast. After, Scrooge comes back from his past the Spirits of the present comes to show Scrooge’s present. The spirit tells Scrooge to enter a room which was full of foods and Christmas decorations. When the Ghost of the present took him to places it is l loud and cheerful. All of a sudden it was all loud (strange). Scrooge
Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean-spirited, greedy old man, is visited by his old friend, Jacob Marley. Marley warns Scrooge that if he doesn’t change his greedy ways, he will meet an unfortunate fate. Marley tells of three ghosts that will visit scrooge in the next three nights: the ghost of christmas past, the ghost of christmas present, and the ghost of christmas yet to come. The ghost of christmas past shows scrooge his old christmas memories in his apprenticeship with the merchant Fezziwig, and his engagement to Belle-a woman who eventually leaves Scrooge because of his lust for money- which leaves scrooge moved and in tears of regret. The ghost of christmas present takes scrooge through london to show the Cratchit family and Tiny tim, a crippled boy, preparing a small dinner for christmas. Then they see his nephew’s bright, happy party, while as the day passes the spirit gets older and eventually shows scrooge two starving children, ignorance and want, before vanishing. The ghost of christmas yet to come show scrooge through various scenes of people arguing over a dead man's riches, later revealing to scrooge that the dead man is him, which makes scrooge beg to change his fate. The spirit sends Scrooge back to his bed, with a newfound mindset that causes him to become more generous and kind to those around him.
Scrooge is then taken by three spirits: Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future. Along each journey, Scrooge experiences a time in his life where he regrets how he handled a situation, or how he responded
There are only three persons at his funeral that did not cognize Scrooge well and are only planning what to do with his fortune considering he did not have anyone close to give the money to. The only change that happens due to his death is that a family are grateful considering the debt they had could take more time to be paid. The ghost also shows his co worker and his family disconsolate due to the passing over of Tiny Tim. Scrooge feels panicked and remorseful and promises the ghost to cause a change in his live.
