Why is suspense so important ? what does it truly mean in thehorror? Suspense is important because it keeps the reader entertained. Horror has been seen for many years now in differnt types of ways such as movies, films, books, or plays. Writer W.F.
Harvey who wrote the short story “August heat” uses different ways of suspense in his story. However, how is suspense used when creating a horror story? There are many ways to create suspense, but the most important ones are mystery, foreshadowing, and a frightening effect.
One of the things that is used to create suspense is mystery. Mystery is what keeps the reader have the urge to continue to read. For example in the story “August heat” it states “ It was the man i had been drawing, whose portrait

A second thing that is used to create suspense is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is commonly used when wanting to make something scary. Foreshadowing is when the reader knows an upcoming event that's going to happen to one of the main characters.
For example, in the story “August heat” it quotes “ I said little, for I felt uneasy. There was something unnatural, uncanny, in meeting this man” (Source B). The author

foreshadows the main character and the reader is given an idea of what's going to happen to the main character.
A third way that is used to create suspense is A frightening effect. This mean when the reader is feeling in some sort of way that the character is also feeling. For example, in the story “August heat” it claims “...a handy man with his tools, is going to mend it as soon as he has finished putting an edge on his chisel.”(Source B). The man that the main character drew on his drawing is sharpening tools and “it is enough to send a man mad.” (source B). So in other words, it gives off the effect that the main character is going to get killed by the man sharpening his tools.
Creating a horror films or stories such as “Bram stoker’s Dracula, Mary
You have been reading and learning about stories of suspense, in addition to studying techniques authors use to generate a feeling of suspense in readers. Now you will use those techniques to write your own suspenseful narrative based on real or imagined experiences and events.
Suspense is a detail that many horror writer use to catch the attention of many readers and keep them holding on till the end. Just as W.F. Harvey does when creating suspense in his story August Heat. Mr. Harvey used three methods to create his suspense for his story, foreshadowing, withholding information, and reversal. With these three methods he is able to make the reader feel like, “ We may even hold our breath without realizing it as we read on eagerly to find out how the story ends”(Source 1).
Foreshadowing is a vital ingredient to any suspenseful story. It hints at the idea that something is off-kilter, without ever revealing exactly what that something is. This leaves readers with an uneasy feeling about the plot, but they can’t quite figure out why. Because of that suspicious feeling, readers are left with a burning desire to find out what happens on the next page. Foreshadowing can be achieved many different ways, such as through eree names, unpleasant conversations, and odd occurrences.
Suspense is when the author makes the reader, or audience excited or scared for what might happen in the story, or even what will happen to the character next in the story. Suspense might even be something you see or hear that will make you have questions about what will happen next. If there is a cliffhanger at the end of a story, it will leave you with questions wondering what will happen to the characters next. The mood, tone, setting, emotions of character, sound and sight might affect how the story is suspenseful. We all enjoy watching suspenseful movies and reading stories, because they are exciting. It leaves us with questions that the author won't have the answers to in the end, so the author gives us as the audience, the chance to make up their own ending to the story or movie. The author will give you clues throughout the story, to help you fill in questions you might have in the end. This makes it more exciting for the reader and the audience because we get to engage with the characters in the book or movie. The tv series, Stranger Things, is about 4 kids who have to fight off monsters in a little town in Indiana. This TV show is a great example of suspense, and it shows it effectively because, of Foreshadowing, Dilemma, and Dramatic Irony presented throughout the show. With just using those four examples, Stranger Things is a great example of suspense.
Writers can use many tricks to make a story seem more interesting to the reader. From the words they pick to the setting to the time of the day... the possibilities are endless. In the story "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe, the use of light and darkness, the description of the mans eye and the time frame make the story more scary than anything else. Poe also uses suspense at the end to make the readers heart beat faster.
In the sources the authors talk about suspense in stories they write. The suspense in the story could be how the author doesn’t give full detail or description on one or more characters. In the source “How do horror writers create suspense” by Percy D’Aco it shows that many horror stories often revolve around mayhem and the stuff in nightmares, and that great horror story often reflects a person’s biggest fear. Often authors like to keep the readers in suspense to scare them or make them want to keep reading and see how the story ends.
“For some time I sat in silence. Then a cold shudder ran down my spine.” That would be one example of how suspense is created throughout a horror story. There have been multiple authors which have made frightening stories and put a lot of work into them.Furthermore, as in the story, “August Heat” by W.F. Harvey, it is composed of suspense around the piece. A prime example would be the use of foreshadow, reversal, and being unpredictable. Therefore, combining the three makes the completion of a story with frightening scenes, along with the suspense.
A key element in horror stories is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing will make readers want to read more and it will also create suspense. Foreshadowing is nearly same in horror stories. Foreshadowing in horror stories such as “THE LANDLADY”, “THE MONKEY’S PAW” and “THE TELL- TALE HEARTS” and "The Hitchhiker" are very important and creates suspense for the readers which makes the readers want to read more.
For example, “The first of Maggs lies.” (191) When Lucy notices that “Maggs and Son” is just Maggs himself, the author foreshadows that this is just the first of his soon-to-come lies. Knowing that Maggs will be lying later on in the story; it gives you the knowledge that Maggs is sneaky and with the information of his looks above, it adds on to the feel of his character; that creepy “vibe.” Maggs says, “Because things seem to happen to people who don’t pay me my money… you watch that house.” (192) Maggs increased his price of repairing the leak to an annoying price of fifty dollars and Lucy refused to pay him anything at all. The fact that Maggs threatened Lucy gives another reason to the creepy mood you feel while reading about the confrontations the two have with each other. The author’s foreshadowing helps to prove the eerie mood and also, with another alternative reason, so does his figurative
Suspense is that feeling of stress or anxiety because you are uncertain of what the story will bring next. When all of the events in a story are falling into place and are climbing to its highest potential. Some stories have more of a suspense than others depending on what methods the author uses to display suspense. The first method of creating suspense in a story is the pace. Whether the pace of a story is slow or fast, it can help with the buildup of suspense.
There are many specific ways an author may try to create suspense in a story, some of the ways are: element of danger, mood, and foreshadowing. Creating suspense is a way in which the author tries to keep the reader intrigued in the story: it’s what keeps the reader's attention throughout the story. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, a guy's falls off a boat while trying to retrieve his pipe that fell out of is mouth. Rainsford the guy who fell off the ship hears a gunshot and swims toward it with hope that he will find civilization. When he gets to the island he finds a very large mansion. When he knocks on the door a very large man opens the door with a gun pointed at Rainsford. Soon after entering the house
How do authors create suspense? Repetition and the right choice of words can prove to be pretty useful. Firstly, “The Tell-Tale Heart” can be very perplexing. How did that old man get that vulture-like eye?
Can your imagination lead you to real life either present or even the future? In the short story “August Heat”, W.F Harvey uses different types of foreshadowing throughout the story in order to create suspense. Suspense is commonly used by authors when writing or directing anything that has to do with horror. Suspense in a storyline helps develop confusion and suspicion about what will happen next. Allowing a kind of picture to pop up into readers heads.
Everyone off us has stayed up all night at the edge of our bed waiting to find out what will happen next; 83.3% of all Americans have have done this. Suspense is any time a person is craving to know what will happen next. Authors use various elements such as cliffhanger, delayed answers ,and many more to create suspense. Elements are important if a author wants a successful suspenseful story. However, setting and delayed answers are necessary for the development of a successful suspenseful story.
This occurs when the director builds a scene by leaving hints of what might happen. The viewer is expecting something to occur and might even know what is about to happen. The audience will have the feeling of wanting to protect their characters from the expected result of the scene. There are many examples of suspense in the movie Do You Believe. The first scene where there is suspense is when Pretty Boy and Kriminal steal money from Nefarius.
