In many stories characters change for a variety of reasons. I think that they change to teach the reader a lesson. This means that a character who is bad will sometime's change and will be good at the end of the book. Something will happen to them that makes them see that they have to change. I also think that characters change so that reader will find the book interesting.

In the beginning of the story "A Christmas Carol" Ebenezer Scrooge is a grumpy old man. He does not have the Christmas spirit. He also does not care about anyone. He did not like to help people. The clerk who works for Mr. Scrooge would freeze at work because his boss wouldn't pay for coals to keep him warm.
