This paper will explore the how diversity is addressed within my current work environment. For the past 21 years, I have been a Behavioral Health Assistance Service Director of a private, non-profit organization that provides community support services to children and adults in Pennsylvania with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and autism. Our agency’s mission statement expresses our commitment to “enhancing the quality of life and personal growth of those we serve through support for individual choice and independence” along with embracing the philosophy that each individual has the ability to succeed in life, through personal empowerment with dignity and respect. Our agency provides services in four different regions (Northeast, Southeast, Lehigh Valley and Western) of Pennsylvania that include 16 counties. Due to the vast array of services and their locations, focus will be place on the Northeast region of the agency. Please note that policies and procedures are agency wide as so are agency trainings. At the present time, approximately 70% of our workforce is white and 30 % comprising of Blacks, Hispanics and non-Caucasians. In addition, these percentages appear to mimic the population that we serve. According to the US Census (2010), the community in which services are provided is comprised of 80.9% Whites, 14.9% Black and 12.1% Hispanic. These figures alone may lead one to believe that the occurrence of healthcare disparities is low, but
My experience with diversity in the workplace has generally been good. In my current workplace we have a good mix of most of the elements of diversity and for the most part it's simply a non-issue. The reasons for that, I believe are related to the fact that the rate of diversity is so high that it's no longer even noticed.
When it comes to healthcare racial disparities continue to be an ongoing issue. In fact racial disparities have been a topic of discussion since desegregation. The US Department of Health and Human Services, in 1984 published a report that called attention to the healthcare disparities. The report was called Heath, United States 1983(Dougher, 2015). Within the context of the report there lies a passage that describes the major disparities that are within the burden of illness and death that is experienced by African Americans and other minorities, “despite significant progress in the overall health of the nation” (Dougher, 2015). It was evident that there was a serious lack of health care minorities.
Demographics of the US population have changed drastically within the past three decades. These progressions specifically affect the healthcare industry with respect to the patients we serve and our workforce. By 2050, the word minority will take on a new meaning. As per the US Census Bureau, by mid-century the white, non-Hispanic population will contain fewer than 50 percent of the country's population. Intrinsically, the healthcare industry needs to change and receive better approaches to meet the diverse needs of our present, future patients and workers. Because diversity challenges faced by the healthcare industry are not constrained to quality-of-care and access-to-care issues, the third part of our exchanges will investigate how these
On a regular occasion, when driving with males in a car, and there is somebody on the road making an error in driving, the comment always comes up that the driver must be a female. I know that it is said in jest, but it is a typical stereotyping comment which is made, which seems to be accepted by society. I don’t drive, so I don’t take offence to the comment, but I do stand up for other female drivers when the comment is made though, because I wouldn’t be surprised if other females, who do drive, do take offence to such a comment. Learning what I have now though, if a comment like that is said, then I won’t react to it. I will be tolerant towards the person saying it because they are obviously repeating something which is commonly said within society and said in jest. Even though the comment isn’t acceptable to me, I will learn to tolerate it.
I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.
What is diversity and what does it entail? Luther College defines diversity as “complex differences and similarities in perspectives, identities, and points of view among members of an institution as well as among individuals who make up the wider community.” Diversity has been a hot topic in today’s news and social networking arenas with the ever-changing race relations that are prevalent in our country and around the world. The changes in perception towards minorities and women hasn’t just affected these groups socially, but has brought forth different questions about the benefits that a truly diverse would place would have on companies. What this work will attempt to do is elaborate on the treatment of
After retirement a good percentage of retirees still need to work or would like to work (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). An awareness of the older worker’s developmental and social challenges are important for understanding post career decisions (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). Usually older workers are in Erikson’s developmental stages of generativity versus stagnation or integrity versus despair (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). Older workers, after retirement, may find it difficult to maintain involvement in things such as social contact with co-workers which may loose appeal over time (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). Other concepts with this group include mental and physical capabilities and social attitudes about the aging worker (Harper & Shoffner, 2004). Maintaining
Indeed, diversity is an important aspect of the workforce. Ranging from race to religion and the world are comprised of diverse cultures and identities. From my own experience of working finding common ground is paramount for success. First Peter 2:17 says, “Honor all men, Love the believers. Fear God. Honor the King.” (King James Version). Adopting this as an individual attitude for managing diversity in the workplace is good for an organization. “Cultural diversity in the workplace is currently a hot topic. (Castpoint, 2017, para 3), “Our worldview determines our assumptions, and assumptions determine emotions, which in turn determine our behavior.” (CastPoint, 2017, para. 4), “Values Covenant: removes the worst, takes
“Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?” When George W. Bush spoke those words amongst a crowd of people in Florence, South Carolina several years ago, he probably had no idea that it would one day be put on a list called The top 25 Bushisms of all time -- and it wouldn’t even be #1. As a politician, no matter how inconsequential your position may seem, you are constantly under a microscope being looked at by your peers, your employers, and the media. Everything you say or do will have an outcome on your career, no matter how unrelated to your field it may be, or how secret you try to keep it. It is for reasons such as this that one must always be aware of their words and actions. To survive under the scrutiny of others, a
Former President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.” This quote in itself explains my reasons for wanting to become a social worker, which is so that so that I can use my past experiences and work towards the future, so that no child feels forgotten. Also, this quote explains my goals, which are to either be a school or military social worker when I graduate. As well as, this quote explains my perspectives on different conversational topics. This paper, will explain how the reality of my life led me to want to pursue social work, my dreams after graduating and my thoughts on various subject matters.
Diversity is present in all aspects of life, its been major topics for cultures forever and helps with all social or cultural probems of diputes. When you have such a huge populations of peopel there are bound to be a lot of differneces and ways of looking at things so ther has to be understanding involved otherwise nothing gets resolved. the key is to be accepting to everytone and never judge anyone regardless of differences. Diversity is extremely importante; in the work place, school, or over all population diversity is the key that unites it all. With diversity you get people from all walks of life that share their unique stories or create opportunities for new insight to be shared. Diversity is important because it recognizes that
I think it’s pretty common for people to picture a Caucasian male with a suit and briefcase when picturing someone with some high end cooperate job. We used to be able to blame this on the fact that many different races weren’t getting the same level of education. In these days, with everyone getting equal opportunities in education and more diversity in higher educational institutes, there should be no reason that races aren’t represented more equally when it comes to white collar jobs. Many studies have shown that more diverse economies make for much stronger ones. When businesses can accept the nation’s ever changing demographics, they obtain a more diverse and inclusive workforce which benefits them economically.
Furthermore, the power of context is the things in the environment can change people’s behaviors. This will let them know what kinds of actions are properly doing at what time. Lofferda proposes that some higher level people in the society always do not have good behaviors and take advantages of gays, she states that “the Supreme Court upheld a Cincinnati ordinance that denied gays and lesbians legal protection from discrimination in housing, employment, and other public accommodations” (249). This quote shows that even in higher government, the gays cannot get the same treatment like the housing and employees as the other residents. The surroundings around them are really terrible. They cannot get really benefits and advantages from the society or the government.
Recent diversity initiatives are impacting all levels of the public and private sectors in relation to personnel and workforce planning. Over the last twenty years, research shows that productivity gains from the existing workforce increase with a diversified staff (dol.gov, 2017). Diversity in the workplace is defined as, the variety of differences between people in an organization. Diversity includes gender, age, race, ethnic group, personality, cognitive style, tenure, organizational function, education, background and more (dol.gov, 2017). The need to become inclusive in management and the
Silicon Valley is the home to many of the world’s largest high-tech corporations. Silicon Valley companies employee a plethora of talent-rich workers who lead the way in 21st century, and beyond, technological advances. Google is one of the crown jewels of Silicon Valley and like many successful companies, such as Xerox or Velcro; the name has morphed into a verb become synonymous with an activity. “Google this” is the expression that is used to indicate using any internet search engine for results. Although Google is successful in its unique approach to employee development, the company admittedly falls short when it comes to diversity. With businesses recognizing that workplace diversity can positively effect corporate profits, Google
