A Brewing Evil
The cover of night and a mask of flesh creates a completely enigmatic identity. Dr Jekyll stumbles upon this opportunity in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In this novela, Robert Louis Stevenson uses themes of freedom, symbolism, and the struggle between good and evil, to show that suppressing true feelings leads to an escalation of turmoil. Stevenson shows a man’s own mind can wrest his freedom. Jekyll 's inner desires grow so strong they torture him. He concerns himself with nothing but freeing his soul from his mental pain. Jekyll becomes free from the chains of society, but he becomes entangled with Hyde. Transforming becomes an addiction, he cannot control himself. Although he knows it harms himself and those around him, he thrives in a state of evil ecstasy. As Dr. Jekyll, he conforms to the status quo. My Hyde lives different and unique. Jekyll cannot help but fall in love with his newly encountered freedom.
One could trace the theme of freedom to the Victorian Era society. Led by Queen Victoria of England, the city of London improved science, society, and architecture. The Victorian period, known for its great accomplishments and innovations, prompted people to suppress their behaviors and desires (Mora). The progressive Victorian period brought innovation to the world; however, it also presented an elitism. This lead to the oppression of a person 's true thought. Jekyll had to suppress his true desires to gain the acceptance of his peers. For example, Jekyll recalls the power of his new identity by stating he "could plod in the public eye with a load of genial respectability, and in a moment strip off these lendings and spring headlong into the sea of liberty”(Stevenson 80). Jekyll as Hyde could simply go into the London crowd without the burden of expectations. Societal expectations burden the prestigious Dr. Jekyll, and he longs for freedom. Jekyll could avoid his feelings of unrest if not for the restraints
