Make Learning Your Own with Technology When you hear technology in the mix of education there is always a red flag. They say that technology hinders your learning, draws you away from what is important. When it comes to learning some students are just plain tired or it and much rather be on their phone, either its playing games or just on social media. I should know because I’m one of those kids. Whenever I don’t understand something or am just plain bored of the topic we’re on I go straight to my phone. The teacher/Professor would give a warning and after that nothing. Why not use this piece of technology and build from it? There are many ways we can use technology to, make learning fun again or even for those who hate learning peak their …show more content…
Flipped classroom is a way where students can learn at own pace. Without ridicule from their classmates it is a save environment for everyone. This program allows you to adapt to teaching easily, lectures, assignments, quizzes, and exams on this program you can utilize your class time with one on one chats. Getting to know your progress in the class asking questions or even building a relationship with your teacher/professor. “There are many things to praise about the concept of the flipped classroom. With positive results from many teachers and school districts throughout the country, there's no denying that the approach can (and has been) successful in certain cases” (Jenkins). Chelsea Jenkins states that in many countries and school districts have had their success stories. This program can help kids learn at their own pace with their own skills. Not having to worry about classmates knowing if their slower or faster with the task at hand. This is a way on how to make learning different. Using that word that doesn’t really blend in the mix of learning. I believe that this program can help us learn in a better and more comfortable matter. Another one of these programs could also be ABCmouse which helps the younger kids before being involved in the school systems. It’ll help them become prepared what will come, a bunch of learning games that tricks their young minds to learn but disguise it with games, fun songs, and colors. Parent say they love the program and see a big jump in their child’s
One day during algebra we were learning a new and difficult way to solve an algebra problem. I didn’t know how to do the homework, so I used the internet to teach myself, the website went through step-by-step and taught me and I was able to finish and get all the right answers on my homework. Technology can be a huge positive to someone's learning experience. Every student should be allowed to have a device in the classroom because it allows faster information, different teaching techniques, and teaches you how to find the right information out of many answers .
The biggest problem with today’s education is how rapid technology is advancing. So rapid, in fact, that schools are attempting to keep up, but are sadly falling short. Teachers are being required to incorporate new technology into their everyday methods of teaching. The use of IPads or laptops in classrooms can be helpful to both teachers and students(edreform online classes)”. If a teacher is not overly familiar with the new devices, then the students will lose what little time they have to learn. As a teacher is attempting to fix technical problems in one class, the class that has a tech savvy teacher will be advancing far ahead. On the other hand, if a classroom is full of students who are very unfamiliar with the technology will have to be taught how to operate it, which wastes valuable time. In today’s society technology usage is so much more widespread than it was just five years ago. The new toys can allow schools to broaden their curriculum. Since most work can be done on a single device, kids can work at their own pace and potentially reach heights they could never reach with book, pen, and paper. The benefits of this new tech greatly outweigh the downsides. The biggest problem with technology in classrooms is their lack of use. So few schools have jumped on board with these programs, and therefore are holding their kids back. These products are readily available, but “the use of new technology
In this article it explains that flipping the classroom is where the students prepare for the lesson before class then receive feedback on the lesson. That would give the students time to ask questions. Besides a flipped classroom this article talks a bout the inverted classroom and peer instruction. The students complete worksheets and get to ask questions during class the worksheets are then chosen, at random, to be taken for a grade. Peer instruction is a new technological way for students to interact with each other. The students receive clickers that will anonymously show the answer to the questions, and then in small groups they will discuss the questions. All of these methods tend to work, but according to the article the peer instruction has the best effect on students because they are discussing with their peers.
Electronics are believed to interfere with learning. Jose Antonio Bowen states in his article, “NO: Classrooms Must Be a Place of Focus and Mental Stillness,” that instead of improving education, technology “doesn’t solve the problem, it only brings it into the classroom.” However, these problems could be prevented if students were given restrictions while still having the ability to find different and unique ways to boost their knowledge. In “YES: New Tools Let Students Learn More, and More Deeply,” Lisa Nielsen explains that just because they have access to electronic devices does not necessarily mean that they are doing something other than texting or cheating, and that teachers are monitoring their students at the best of their ability.
I am looking forward to find a way to get my students involves with technology from home and to come more prepared for in-depth learning instead of just basic knowledge. Currently, I am just taking this blended class to see what it is like to teach a blended classroom.
It also explains the theoretical basis for this method that because students have background knowledge from lecture done before class, it gives them class time to explore difficult sections with immediate feedback from instructors and peers. It also pushes students to think about their own learning and allows for more growth in critical thinking. However the most helpful portion of this article is when it details how to effectively use the flipped classroom method in a way that is conducive to student learning. She note that you should provide the opportunity for students to gain first exposure prior to class, provide some incentive or necessity for student to be prepared for class, ad utilize their first exposure, then find a method that works best to access student understanding of the learned material, and last provide in class activities that “focus on higher level cognitive abilities.” In other words, creating activities that foster student using learned information in a way that allows for authentic production in the classroom for feedback opportunities. (Brame,
In this technology savvy era, inventions such as the internet gives educators the ability to post online lectures that are easily accessible on sites like YouTube and are commonly used to teach students lessons in the classroom. Taking it one step further, a man named Salman Khan created a website called Khan Academy. Now students can learn the material at home by watching the video lectures online and attend school to receive help from his or her teachers and peers on the homework. Flipping the classroom will change the educational system in the future by making learning more enjoyable, helpful, and allowing students to improve upon their academic skills and communicate effectively with their fellow classmates and teachers.
Evidence-based teaching is becoming more and more popular as educators are figuring out how students learn best. “In evidence-based teaching, nurse educators use knowledge about how students learn, how best to promote their learning and performance, effective teaching and assessment methods, and other practices to guide what they do as educators.” (Oremann, 2015, p.305). By educators examining how teaching is most effective assists them in helping the students achieve their maximum potential. Many theories and ideas guide educators in effective teaching including lecture, flipped classroom and practical applications.
The article I used was "Should You Flipp Your Classroom?" written Ramsey Musallan on the website Edutopia. My reaction to the concept of flip classrooms left me beleiving that it is an effective learning technique, for not only the students, but the teachers as well. A flip classroom is a technique that is used in the classroom, by utilizing the homework in class, as well as watching online lectures at home. In the classroom the assignments are hands on, and allows the students to go through a trial and error procedure, where they really get to experiance and learn whatever it may be that they are doing. When I am a teacher, i will seriously consider utilizing the flipped classroom method, because I believe that a more hands on method is more
Content: Within the flipped classroom model, the focus of inside class shifts to questions & answers and group-based problem solving, while students study lectures and make quizzes & exercises outside calss.
An important aspect of change, will be in how students are presented with the learning process and in how educators gauge the level of progress. Considering that accountability is a key aspect, the teaching methods implemented will play a huge part in the success of change. The flipped classroom is a unique teaching method that can bring monumental change in the learning environment. It will provide educators with the ability to consider and understand all factors that influence how each and every one of the students learn and subsequently, perform in and out of the classroom.
As a companion to the flipped format, professors also used clickers to engage students in the in-class activities. Ninety-four percent of the students preferred the flipped and clicker method. Professors in this study found there was an increase in quiz, project, and test scores. In doing the higher order thinking activities, students not only knew the material but also knew how to apply it (Garver, Roberts, 2013). In another study using the FIZZ method of flipping a classroom, there was an overall increase in student success, parent involvement, administrative support, and in teacher job satisfaction. In a survey conducted by the website Classroom Window, nearly 90% of the 500 teachers polled reported improved job satisfaction, 70% reported there had been an increase in standardized test scores, and 80% reported that students’ attitudes had improved (Brunsell, Horejsi, 2013). In a third study using nursing students, the students that experienced the flipped classrooms had significantly higher unit test scores but the scores on the final exam were no different than those in a traditional class(Matsuda, Azaiza, Salani, 2017). After a study of flipping a high school Liberal Arts class conducted by Jong (2017) a student had this to
Many of today’s students in some schools across the country are using technology in their classrooms. Some students and parents believe this could benefit the students’ education, while others see the many flaws to the idea.
This sounds like a great idea but, will every student really have time or access to watching these videos? I don’t think it really said anything about this in the article. That’s a concern of mine. The Flipped Classroom really is a fantastic idea. I just don’t know if every student would really watch the videos all the time. It’s sometimes hard to do some homework at night. And if their parents weren’t involved in their child’s education they wouldn’t push them to watch those videos. I guess they could just have the videos for when students need to see a lesson again. But, I feel like teachers would use it as a thing to just teach the students so they had more class time to work on things.
Education has always been a major topic in our society, and as of late, the new idea of flipped learning has been announced. Flipped learning can be best described as an instructional strategy and a type of blended learning that reverses the traditional learning environment by delivering instructional content, often online, outside of the classroom. It moves activities, including those that may have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom. In a flipped classroom, students watch online lectures, collaborate in online discussions, or carry out research at home and engage in concepts in the classroom with the guidance of a mentor. Some examples would be to watch a Khan Academy video and to take a
