In the 10th century the first crusade took place in the Holy Lands. The crusade was a medieval military expedition that the Europeans created to regain the Holy Lands from the Seljuk Turks. Throughout the first crusade many different countries, religions and people were involved, some of these were Pope Urban II, Christians, Seljuk Turks, Europeans, Muslims and Jews. In 1096-1099 people went on the first crusade to take back the Holy Land. They did this for many different reasons, some of these reasons are money, power, taking back the Holy Land and going to heaven. The people who took part in the pilgrimages to Jerusalem were to wear the sign of the cross. The first crusade commenced with Pope Urban II making a speech at the Clermont in France. …show more content…
These people, countries and religions took part in this because they wanted to be wealthy. It is shown from this source from A Muslims View of the Siege of Jerusalem, “The Franks stripped the Dom of the Rock of more than 40 silver candelabra, each of them weighing 3,600 grams” This source explains that when people went on the first crusade people were extremely hungry for riches and economic power, as said when the Franks stole from the Dom of the Rock around 3,600 grams of silver. The wealth was extremely important back in this century due to the fact of the economic structure and the feudalism table. The peasants were the lowest on the feudalism table. This impacted their life significantly with the low amount of income they would be getting everyday. These peasants would do anything to get out of the position in the feudalism table, and become a higher rank so they would get more of an income. And for the other ranks such as Bishops, Barons and Priests, to move up and try to get into a higher positions for a larger income so they could become wealthier was important. After the first crusade a lot more people had more money. A quote from Letter from Stephen, Count of Blois and Chartres, to his wife Adele “I now have twice as much [riches] as your love had assigned to me when I left you”. This gives evidence on how the crusaders had gained a lot more riches after the crusade. Money is a secondary reason why people went on the crusade but still was a reason with evidence from people such as
In 1095, Pope Urban II called for an army to go to the Holy Land, Jerusalem. This was what was later known as the ‘First Crusade’. A crusade is a religious war or a war mainly motivated by religion. The first crusade consisted of 10’s of thousands of European Christians on a medieval military expedition to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims. This doesn’t mean that the first crusade was just motivated by religion. Throughout this essay, I will be suggesting the main reasons of why people went on crusades and which different people went for specific reasons and why.
The Crusades took place in the Middle East between 1095 and 1291. They were used to gain a leg up on trading, have more land to show hegemony, and to please the gods. Based upon the documents, the Crusades between 1095 and 1291 were caused primarily by religious devotion rather than by the desire for economic and political gain.
Because of the response the people had to Pope Urban II call to arms a wave of religious enthusiasm swept across Europe. In 1096 Peter the hermit created an army of peasants and soldiers. They traveled to Constantinople, this movement was called the peoples crusade. The outcome of the people’s crusade was tragic because almost all of them died.
The main objective of the first crusade was overcome by a secondary objective which later became the reason why we call it the First Crusade. The initial objective was to respond to the Byzantine Emperor who requested western volunteers to help fight against invading Turks. In The reconquest of jerusalem and the holy land soon became the main objective of the Crusade. Pope Urban in 1095 called upon his people telling them to go jerusalem and liberate the church of God out of devotion and not for honor and wealth. Calling the crusade increased the popes standings in a papacy which was struggling at the time due to the investiture controversy. During this time, religion was very important and people took it very seriously. Jerusalem was the
he subject of the crusades is still a very controversial topic that spans across various time periods and has religious, social, and political implications. The first crusade started off as a widespread pilgrimage that ended as a military expedition resulting in the recapture of Jerusalem in 1099. The crusades initiated from a call from help from Alexius for the protection of Constantinople and the recovery of Anatolia. For centuries textbooks have repeated with routine regularity, that the immediate cause, of the Crusades was the Turkish conquest of the Near East, which apparently was a very real threat to Christendom, that had to be countered by military action. With this in mind, the primary purpose of this essay is to identify the various reasons that contributed to the start of the first crusade, while disproving the fact that the first Crusade was a response to a military threat. In discovering the true cause of the first crusades it is necessary to examine it from all aspects from the start to the finish.
The Crusades, a series of wars, are an extremely important part of history in the 12th century, occurring during the Middle Ages. The Middle East or the Holy Land was always a place that Christians traveled to to make pilgrimages. The Seljuk Turks eventually took control of Jerusalem and all Christians were not allowed in the Holy City. As the Turks power grew, they threatened to take over the Byzantine Empire and Constantinople. The Byzantine Emperor, Alexius I, asked Pope Urban II for help and Pope agreed, hoping to strengthen his own power. He He united the Christians in Europe and In 1095, Pope Urban II waged waged war against muslims in order to “reclaim the holy land.”
Before the crusades, Europeans were self sufficient, living off the their Lord’s Manor. Peasants and serfs traded using items, and there was no need for money. However, nobles needed money in order to pay for travel to the Holy Land. Thus, they allowed the serfs to pay rent in money as well as goods. In order to earn money, peasants sold their items in town, which in turn lead to growth of towns and cities. With an increase in urbanization, serfs saw an opportunity to start a better life away from manoralism. Hence, many serfs ran towards rapidly growing cities. Trade finally flourished throughout Europe, and as stated in More on the Effects of the Crusades, “Nobles and merchants enjoyed the new luxuries and wanted more of them” (Document 8). However, as trade rapidly increased, it not only brought goods from the Islamic Empire, but it also ideas. As new ideas reached Europe, people shifted interest towards education, and life in towns and cities became more popular. Additionally, the Description of the Motivation Behind the Crusaders Desire to Fight in the Holy War illustrates that many Europeans went to the Holy Land in order to “[look] for adventure, for estates, or for commercial opportunities” (Document 3). Although the crusades’ primary goal was to conquer the Holy Land, many Europeans were attracted to the crusades because new experience and opportunity. Serfs and low class citizens
The results on the crusades were more negative than positive. Document 5 states that “Primarily Italians, had established communities in the crusader states.”
The Crusades had some religious hatred behind them. They would sometimes turn their fury against Jews. They had an economy that was built up to be better. Some Crusaders attracted people by the adventures, estates, and commercial opportunities. They had a negative impact on the 4th crusade, because they sacked the city and destroyed it.
Three of the world’s most powerful religions had gone to war during the Crusades, the same war that is responsible for an estimated 1.7 million deaths. The Crusades were a series of Christian military expeditions that lasted through nine Holy Wars. The first crusade, in 1095, was called upon by Pope Urban II in an attempt to stop the Muslim expansion to the Holy City of Jerusalem. Through this, the Christian, Catholic, and Muslim churches will go into a time of warfare as an attempt to both show their religious superiority and have a religious expansion. The western side of Europe was the most significantly impacted by the Crusades because of the 4th Crusade, the foreign influence from the East, and Europe’s economic relations with the world.
The Crusades started by Chrand, modern day Jerusalem. The ultimate war, between, the Christians and thee Muslims. Most of the fighting was in the holy land. The effects of the Crusades had both a positive and negative effects on the times that they were in and still on us. There was a lot of positive though.istian Knights wanting to take back what they felt they had the right to, The Holy Land.
At the beginning of the second crusade the Christians and the Muslims lived side by side, but then the Muslims got greedy and said that they needed more power and land. The Muslims took over jerusalem many times, and annoyed people. Many times, such as in the 1st crusade, the Muslims captures the holy land because they got greedy and wanted more land. They took over the holy land many times and they lost it many times because they had to fight. They got greedy so they fought many battles and won so they were undefeatable.
When the Crusades were started by the Europeans and there were a series of wars against the Islamic state. We see that in 1095 the conflict lasted about 175 years and the Europeans led wars using the name of Christ. Europeans twisted the bible, gave false doctrine and used the bible as a weapon for their cause. The Europeans also attempted to use scripture to justify their violence and manipulated the words to fit their personal goals and agenda. The crusaders heart might have been in the right place, but they left devastation wherever they went.
The first Crusades were ordered by Pope Urban II. The Crusades were a series of military Christians and Muslims. They fought over the holy land of Jerusalem. It took place in Middle East between 1095 and 1291. The Crusades were caused primarily by the desire for political and economical gain rather than religious devotion.
One result of the Crusades was a major shift in the way that the European economy and political attitudes were structured during. Not only did these disagreements lead to a growing involvement between church and state, but opening the door to the Muslim world also led to changed the European economy that would open the door to new wealth. The end result as far as land goes, the Byzantine empire had hoped to gain far more territory than it did but they had to settle for parts of western Anatolia and some Mediterranean islands. The crusader states were formed out of the conquered territories in the 'holy lands', along the entire eastern Mediterranean coast (modern day Israel, Syria etc.) Most future crusades were an attempt to keep these fragile
