Poverty Crises. Feeding America is a United States organization that consists of nationwide network of more than two hundred food banks and food rescue organization that serves the United States as well as Puerto Rico. It is the nation leading hunger relief charity. In the late 1060s, John van Hengel, a retired businessman in Phoenix, began volunteering at a local soup kitchen, and began soliciting food donations for the kitchen. He ended up with far more food than the kitchen could use and when he talked to his client around that time, she told him she regularly feeds her family with food discarded from the grocery store’s garbage bins. He then got an idea where there could be a place where discarded food items could be stored so that …show more content…
The main industry is the agricultural sector which completely depends on the climate. There are strong linkages between poverty and environmental degradation, particularly poor water management, soil erosion, declining soil fertility and land degradation. In addition, the effects of climate change are undermining an already fragile resource base and have contributed to declining agricultural yields over the past decades. In recent years, drought has become a perennial problem in parts of Kenya. Episodes in 2009 and 2011 generated food emergencies, while flooding in 2010 affected parts of the country severely. In contrast with Lincoln Parish’s population growth rate which is nearly stagnant is Molo Parish, which is in, Kenya, one of the countries in the world with the highest population growth rates. Over the years, the population has more than tripled, greatly increasing pressure on the country’s resources. Together with a widening income gap, this has eroded gains in education, health, food security, employment and income. Also, HIV/AIDS is most prevalent among young and middle-aged Kenyans in Molo Parish, the most productive segment of the population. The illness leaves orphans and households headed by women that are even more vulnerable to poverty. The burden of waterborne diseases, malaria and HIV/AIDS weighs heavily on both the country and Kenyan families, affecting income, food security and development potential. Life expectancy fell to 46 years in
Environmental factors are a factor that affect living and nonliving organisms and have participated in Ethiopia’s problem in food deficiency and food insecurity. A large environmental factor that can affect food deficiency and food insecurity is natural hazards and disasters. These can include droughts and floods which can upset agricultural production. For example, grain production and stocks are very low and droughts have hit harvests in grain-producing areas around the world. A more specific example for Ethiopia is that because of Ethiopia’s seasonal rainfall from mid-June to mid-September, soil erosion and
“Feeding America is a non-profit organization created by John Van Hengel in the 1960’s” ("U.S. Hunger Relief Charity | Feeding America®," 2015). He was a retired business man who would volunteer at a local soup kitchen to feed the hungry| (Feeding America®," 2015). “He came upon the idea after a women was desperately looking for food to feed her children”, “she suggested to him there should be a place to store unwanted food instead of throwing it out for trash so the hungry can go and pick up the unwanted food”| (Feeding America®," 2015). Feeding America does not sell products it provides services. It’s an organization which provides the less fortunate and low-income families with free food through nationwide food banks across America| (Feeding America®," 2015). Van Hengel created his first establishment in Phoenix Arizona, and named it Saint Mary’s Food Bank| (Feeding America®," 2015). After several years Van Hengel along with his team the organization “distributed over 275,000 pounds of food to those in need”| (Feeding America®," 2015). In “1977, 18 cities began establishing food banks to serve those in need”| (Feeding America®," 2015). In conclusion, hunger in America is at an all time high due to poverty and the economy. The increasingly high number of starving children has gone up over the past years and needs to be stopped. There are government programs set up to help stop hunger in American, such as, SNAP Food Stamps and WIC. We can get involved by volunteering with Feeding America or other non-for-profit organizations set for feeding the hungry. Food donations and monetary donations have always been a great way to help out for those who don’t have the time to donate.
Feeding America is providing safe and nurturing places for children and families to have a meal, while also providing nutritional foods for seniors in need. Additionally, Feed America is present during national disaster recoveries, providing much needed emergency food assistance to victims and communities. Their services afford adults a chance to break
Feeding America started as a clearinghouse for national food donations. Now it's the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization, a powerful and efficient of 200 food banks across the country. For 35 years Feeding America has responded to America hunger emergencies, and has done a good job at it. The perception of food banks was started by John Van Hengel in the late 60s. Van Hengel born in Waupun, WIi, a retired businessman, was volunteering his time at soup kitchens giving food to people who couldn’t buy food for themselves. One day a poor mom was fishing through the grocery store garbage bins to find food for her family, She suggested that there should be a place where, instead of being thrown out, discarded food could be stored for people to pick up—similar to the way “banks” store money for future use. With that idea is what started the food bank business. ( feedingamerica.org )
The evidence of climate change in Kenya is undeniable, while its effects on economic growth are no more mysterious; rather, they are rapidly unfolding to a startling reality and concern for humanity. Accelerated emissions of green house gases (GHGs) globally, from combustion of fossil fuels and unsustainable land use practices is the key driver of anthropogenic climate change, which is manifested in; temperature variations, frequent and extensive droughts, intensive rainfalls and floods, seasonal and regional pest and disease prevalence that result to conflicts for pasture and water resources,
Feeding America is a 35 year old charity helping feed the hungry. They are located in Phoenix, AZ. John
The health of many women in Algeria which is part of Sub-Saharan Africa in 1990 were impacted by the poor health care system because they lived in poverty. Poverty caused these women to lack essential needs to live a quality life. They lacked or could not afford resources such as supplies, health care professionals, and facilities for healthcare, clean water, and waste disposal. This ultimately affected the health of women and their children. For instance, lack of clean water and waste disposal facilities can cause health abnormalities such as cholera or typhoid fever which can cause devastating deaths. This is a healthcare problem because of the lack of funding. The lack of funding prevents antibiotics from being used to prevent death, and prevents African’s from being vaccinated against typhoid fever. Another example of how poverty affects woman’s health is unintended pregnancy, which is because they are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior. It's part of the health crisis because it includes a poor health system, and a lack of education about proper nutrition and behaviors during pregnancy. Complications in these pregnancies due to poor nutrition and not visiting the doctor regularly includes increased infant mortality. Infant mortality in the slums of Nairobe is 91.3% while it is 75.9% in urban areas where there is a better developed healthcare system. The inferiority of poor Africans in
One of the most problematic issues in America is hunger. Many people day by day from a young age as adults struggle to stay on their feet not only to feed themselves, but other individuals. Poverty is the main cause which leads young generations to fall, due to the standard requirements that they may need to meet, but don't qualify. Gongloff within his article mentioned, “More than 45 million people, or 14.5 percent of all Americans, lived below the poverty line.” This demonstrates how even the most stable country has citizens dealing with starvation, no matter how rich or poor the country is. A remarkable organization dealing with hunger is Feeding America. Feeding America started in the year 1979, which was created by John van Hengel in Phoenix, Arizona. Today, Feeding America is the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization which is a very powerful and successful network. It contains 200 food banks across the country which helps provide food to more than 46 million people through 60,000 food pantries and meal programs. The social problem is being addressed by Feeding America by nursing millions of children and adults who do not get the meals they need to meet the nutrimental provisions in order to help the people build a path to a brighter, food-secure future. For those people who donate just $1 the organization can serve 11 meals which can make a big difference. The sector in which the organization operates in, is the social sector, which includes the government, private, and nonprofit organization. Most of the funding comes from Allstate, Nationwide foundation, Bank of America, Dean Food, Disney and many more. With all the support they get they mostly see children, senior’s, rural, african americans, and latino’s having trouble with hunger. A website named Poverty said “About 21,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. This is one person every four seconds...Sadly, it is children who die most often.” Its pessimistic to see how many people are in danger of death since they don't receive the help they need on time or a second chance. As seen at this moment there is much food insecurity due to the fact that civilization is increasing. Some
“The poor we shall always have with us, but why the hungry?”- John van Hengel, founder, St. Mary’s Food Bank. John van Hengel was the founder of one of the largest food banks in the United States. His idea spread to other cities and eventually carried enough of an impact to cause other countries to follow suit and open food banks as well. John’s concept of a food bank is the same as a typical bank. This being born when overhearing a mother talking about how difficult it was to feed her family.
There are so many people in this world today, that are not aware of the huge storage in our local food bank community. Per the Houston food bank the goal of the Feeding America program is to make food accessible to feed hungry people in their greatest times of need. Therefore, our team is gear up to break the food shortage in defining the problem, analyze the cause, identify criteria, potential solutions and selecting the best solution.
Kenya’s coastal area is hot and humid tropical region. Beautiful sandy beaches, lagoons and swamps, and patches of rain forest line the coast. Inland, a vast plains area stretches over about three-fourths of Kenya. Its extremely dry climate and generally poor soil support only scattered plant life. The highlands in the southwest receive enough rainfall and offer enough fertile soil to support extensive farming (“Kenya”).
One of the most influential problems that is affecting development in Kenya is the lack of education on the subject of human development and the suffering economy. The introductions of fees for treatment resulted in a sharp spread of STD due to the poor economy and lack of awareness. As a result life expectancy dropped, inflammation of STD can damage the spinal cord and brain and prevent your nerve cells from working the way that they should. Neurological complications may result not only from damage caused by the virus itself, but also from other side effects of HIV and AIDS, such as cancers that are associated with these diseases. Not only this, but as a result of the poor economy and access to food, brain development in the womb is affected and as well as lactating women won't be able to provide for their children suffering from lack of nutrition. The goal of our organization is to jumpstart the economy in the poorer parts of the nation in order to create long term stable jobs to allow people to afford food, education, and treatment.
Firstly, climate change has a big impact with world hunger. Climate change may affect food systems in several ways ranging from direct effects on crop production (e.g. changes in rainfall leading to drought or flooding, or warmer or cooler temperatures leading to changes in the length of growing season), to changes in markets, food prices and supply chain infrastructure (Gregory, Ingram & Brklacich, 2005, p.2139). It can trigger a natural disaster like drought and flood, which can have an extreme effect with the problems in the sources of food. In one hand, drought is a common scenario in farm lands in which
The future of Kenya’s HIV and AIDS picture is pegged on the availability of resources with which to scale up essential services. A sustained push to universal
