The Preamble and Federal Budget: Are we slicing the pie correctly? “The federal budget is the yearly plan for how the US government will spend the money it takes from taxes and borrowing.” After thoroughly analyzing the federal budget from 2012, it is unquestionably evident that a majority of the money is being put into a few major categories, leaving room for the rest of the smaller categories to be financially neglected. Is this fair? It seems that the money could be more fairly distributed, and that there is room for cuts in some of the larger categories, to improve the littler ones. In each of the three budget clusters, the US Government should make adjustments in the way it is distributing money; changes involving the big five, the middle …show more content…
The middle five includes: Veterans benefits and services, Transportation, Education, Justice, and Homeland Security. It is hard to look at these, and try to decipher which ones could be cut in order to provide more in other categories, because they all serve a different purpose in supporting each different goal of our preamble. One point that is evident is that there is not enough money going to education from the federal government. Referring back to Document D of the DBQ packet the federal government is contributing only 1.8% of the budget to the education system. Being able to fund education is so incredibly important because the education that is provided to the children in the US is what shapes and forms the future of America. Not being able to provide these kids with a proper education is a matter that will ultimately have a negative effect on the country. That being said it’s hard to decide where the money needed to better the education system should be taken from, seeing as the big five has already been deciphered, and the five different categories here in the middle cluster are all so important. The most substantial chunk of the money here in the middle five is going to veterans benefits and services, and at first thought, it does seem that maybe some money could be taken from there. However, when one thoroughly analyzes where that money is going to (medical costs, support for …show more content…
This category includes: Natural Resources and Environment, NASA, Energy, FBI, and National Park Service. National resources and environment, energy, and the FBI all play a vast role in supporting the nation’s preamble by ensuring the general welfare of the people and providing common defense. That leaves NASA and the National Park Service, and seeing as the national park service receives the smallest amount out of all the categories as is, it seems illogical that any money be taken from there. It is rather alarming; however, that NASA is receiving the second largest amount of money of the five in the little guys. As cool as NASA is, it isn’t a necessity for the country, and the money could probably be way better spent. The changes I would make to the little guys would be to cut NASA’s budget and either give the money to the FBI or the education
Some would say that the government is not correctly dividing the budget the correctly and that some modifications could be made. The Big Five is one of the three clusters that need adjustments. With the budget, the government is able to give support to families to meet the necessary
Should the Federal Budget be spent evenly or are some categories more important than others? There were goals for the United States when it was created, it is called the Preamble. The United States wants to fulfill these goals, however they have a budget. The government hasn’t been spreading the money evenly between the categories. (BGE) The category of the Big Five has way too much of the budget. If we spent more money on other categories, will the government be able to fulfill the goals of the Preamble? Within each of the three budget clusters -the Big Five, the Middle Five, and the Little Guys - several changes should be made because the amount of money the government is spending on one cluster isn’t benefitting our country.
With that being said, one would wonder if all the categories in the Big Five are equally distributed or if the money that is out in one category could be better spent in a different category. One might think that the national debt should be increased. It is essential that the national debt be increased since the country is in deep debt. As stated in Document C, the U.S has more than $10 trillion in debt. Being so deep in debt can disturb our already fragile economy and borrowing additional money can threaten the livelihoods of Americans. One category that could be decreased is Defense. The cartoon in Document F shows President Obama writing the budget, and three figures standing before him, two small ones and one big
To understand the annual federal tax revenue system and the budget that is created from it is to understand a system that is deeply complicated and some would say overwhelmingly corrupt. This federal system is the reason why we have such a strong economy; from it we have funding for schools, hospitals, roads, financial aid programs, the worlds most powerful armed forces, and everything else you can think of. This is the system that keeps our country operating at such a high level and keeps our economy running at, what some would say a “stable” condition. This stability in our federal tax system is subjective, some see a system that is corrupt, that favors the few most powerful
What exactly establishes the federal budget? Just as it takes money to run a household, it takes money to run the government. Like people, the government also makes choices about how to spend its money. Each year, the President and Congress have an official back-and-forth process of deciding what next year’s budget should be. All the government agencies and departments submit a budget request explaining how much money is a necessity. The president makes a list of his own spending priorities, and so does the Congress. They debate, consult, and finally compromise to form a budget that says how much money each entitlement program will receive. When it comes to the federal budget, there are different aspects that are affected;
The Book highlights the tremendously essential responsibility of the Budget offices in examining the structures of departments and agencies. There are several methods for the budget office when restructuring departments and agencies. Reorganizing, privatizing, downsizing, and outsourcing are some of the most important methods. The budget office has the responsibility to seek savings and reduce spending by implementing the idea of outsourcing. For example, outsourcing is an option for government to lift efficiency. The first step in the process of deciding whether to keep production in-house or to contract it out is referred to as the make or buy decision. This is a very interesting and delicate topic, because this decision may produce many
At its formation, the UN had inherited financial problems from its predecessor – the League of Nations (McDermott, 2000). Seventy years down the lane, financial problems have been at the core of the UN activities in peacekeeping missions. Thus, the issue of budgetary crisis with regards to financing old and new peacekeeping operations continue to persist. According to McDermott (2000), peacekeeping “have been both the making and near breaking of the organization.” On one hand, peacekeeping expansion from traditional peacekeeping to peacekeeping and now peacebuilding have contributed to the exponential growth of the organization. On the other hand, the spread out of peacekeeping increases cost and have overly
As time passes, the Speaker of House agrees on a continuing resolution with a 3% budget cut, but now they need the other party, the President to give in and agree. The Chief of the White House staff goes over to speak to the President, but the President won’t back down and take the continuing resolution with a 3% budget cut to keep the country running. Therefore, the Chief of Staff stays with the President a little while longer to try and encourage the President to think clearly for the benefit of the country. The chief of staff says, “Sir, you’re putting all our chips down on a single hand we can’t win.” This gets the President even more enraged, slamming his hand on the table and then replies saying, “We had a deal, Leo.”
The options in this volume come from legislative proposals, various Administrations' budget proposals, Congressional staff, other government entities, and private groups, among others. Because the spending options in this volume are intended to help lawmakers review individual programs, they do not include large-scale budget initiatives, such as eliminating entire departments or agencies. The options are intended to reflect a range of possibilities, not a ranking of priorities, and the report does not provide an exhaustive list of policy alternatives. The inclusion or exclusion of a particular policy change does not represent an endorsement or rejection by CBO. In keeping with CBO's mandate to provide objective, impartial analysis, this report makes no recommendations.
Following the controversial win of this year’s presidential election, President Donald Trump’s initiates his first budget proposal to be increasing military spending. More explicitly, he not only seeks to see a sharp $56 billion-dollar increase in military spending, but also to cut funding from nonmilitary programs such as education, poverty and the environment to name a few. This increase might not seem like much considering that some can arguable say that an increase of military spending can create more job opportunity and that protecting our nation at all cost should be National Security first priority. However, if the bigger picture is being looked at, funding from many government assistant programs like Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security
Is the government spending too much, too little, and on what should they be spending on? The answer to this question will be based on the financial figures reported by various government programs as well as the use of these monies. Various aspects of the annual budget along with the use of the appropriated monies can reveal the effectiveness of the many departments and programs of the federal government.
There are far more important things the federal government can do with the funds cut from the NPS. More federal funding can go towards education. As of now, there is a debate for increasing the caliber for students to receive TOPs (a scholarship that goes toward college expenses). About a year ago the budget was cut and now there
Budget analysis is a process that involves the evaluation if a given budget in order to see its efficiency. When conducting this process, it is crucial to locate the problem areas as well as check if we are reaching the set financial goals. The analysis should be carried out monthly, quarterly or annually as deemed appropriate. In this paper, we prepare an analysis of funding levels for the U.S. Government and its Department of Education, identify trends as you look at 2011 budgets and then compare it with the 2009 and 2010 in terms of the amounts for outlays and receipts, and relationship to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and present a clear and concise conclusion that recaps the highlights of the documents (Official U.S budgets) with final remarks.
Funding for elementary, middle and high schools, hiring more teachers, supplying more computers, better facilities, lunch programs, tutoring, busing, etc., educating our children better, so that their goals and chances are better to finish and go to college, instead of dropping out and getting into trouble. This funding would be of greater use than waiting to educate and train young men and women after incarceration, dealing with crime before they become criminals. It could help with the funding of people to acquire the skills needed to maintain
The operational budget is a key part of any business or organization. It is a necessity for both profit and non- profit organizations. The budget is used to allocate financial, physical and human resources to achieve strategic goals (Best Practices, 2000). The budget shows how resources will be utilized; it should be linked to the overall strategic plan of the business or organization.
