Introduction
Humans has been discussing and thinking of the complex theories of ethics and how they relate to mankind for centuries. The history of human ethical philosophy is far greater and more complex than this paper can ever truly attempt to define or explain. Great philosophers like Aristotle, Machiavelli, Kant and Mills have already taken on the aforementioned task. This paper is not an attempt to replicate their work or explain their work, instead this paper will look to take the theories they have presented along with the writings presented throughout the entirety of this course and discuss the risks associated with the creation and implementation of organizational codes of ethics without factoring in the needs of humanity, then create a personal code of ethics.
Why Codes of Ethics
When examining codes of ethics within and organization we might ask ourselves, why are organizational codes of ethics important? The answer can vary depending on the type of organization, for instance the code of ethics in a governmental organization should tell us how the public interest is to be furthered, while in a nonprofit agency the code may be more of a values statement for the organization. It’s a set of guidelines that must be followed to make ethical choices when conducting work related matters. Code of ethics is an organizations form integrity. A personal ethical code is something everyone has. People may be aware of it to different degrees, or have differing levels of definition, but no one is entirely unprincipled. Ethical codes may be based off different factors such as religion, society, and family. My personal ethical code is derived from simply one source, the writings of Immanuel Kant. I find that the code described by him is the only one that is truly justified, and therefore the only one I would be able to follow without cognitive dissonance or feeling I was doing the wrong thing. However, as this is my personal code, and I don’t want to merely rephrase Kant, I interpret the rules much differently than he did, and in some places make modifications or draw radically different conclusions. Otherwise, My ethical code is based on following The Categorical Imperative whenever possible.
The value of integrity is another important aspect of the NASW Code of Ethics. It is essential that social workers develop a relationship built on trust and righteousness. It has been suggested that through a “minimum combination of training and ongoing support (supervision, consultation, and coaching), preferably extended with booster sessions,” (Goense, Boendermaker & Yperen, 2015, p. 69), a social worker can develop an effective relationship full of integrity. According to the National Association of Social Workers (1999), social workers can promote integrity in the social work profession by participating in the community through educational presentations, providing services, teaching or conducting research.
This article poses an ethical issue not seen in many braches of science, and that is multiple codes of ethics. Anthropological research is typically done by conducting field work. Thus, as the article states the anthropologist’s values and ethics will meet that of the culture being studied and they will either compliment or compete with each other. Having a solid ethics code is impossible for an anthropologist, just as anthropologists must adjust themselves to other cultures their ethics must as well. Using a code of ethics in business attempts to create a basic understanding of acceptable ethical behavior to be used when handling situations involving the company, government agencies and the general public.
Felipe was concerned about many issues when he visited the Chinese factories. The ethical filter of “self” spoke words to him, as he felt uncomfortable about continuing to outsource his company’s products from a factory with such rough conditions. The employment of young girls, long working hours, lack of appropriate gears for employees to perform their work safely, high temperatures inside the factories, danger respiratory conditions, and also the living conditions the workforce was exposed to - including no windows or running water - were against his personal definition of right, good and fair. Even though the case study does not describe clearly, one could easily assume that these practices do not comply with the key values and the code of ethics and conduct that Felipe’s company is likely to have. The fact that Felipe was immediately shocked with the labor conditions shows that it goes against what his company practices in his home country, triggering the filters of “policies” and “universal”.
